    The silver bar on the rear quarter of the hearse is called a landau bar. It serves no purpose other than it is a tradition. Hearses are also known as a coach. Back in the days a coach (horse drawn) had a roof that could be taken down like a convertible, the landau bars helped to fold down the collapsed roof. Coaches of that nature were consider for the rich and noble. Thus the Landau bar serves as a sign of nobility and respect for the deceased.

      @@SargeWolf010There dedicated hearses, dedicated ambulances, as well as dual purpose. By the time this Cadillac was built, ambulance standards had evolved and car based ambulances were no longer allowed. The Professional Chassis was then limited to limousine and hearse conversiond.

    Funeral director here! I own quite a few hearses for our firm as well as for personal use, including one similar to the one in the video. The engine is the 5.7L based off the LT1 used in the C4 Corvettes. These are great year models to have because its just before Cadillac switched to the North Star V8s.

      Also the landau bars (large trim on the side) is usually easily removed by unscrewing the large, round knobs on each end. Makes it easier to clean behind them. Not always the case but worth a shot.

    Owned a 1974 Cadillac Superior Hearse as a daily driver for many years. Used it mainly because I worked on restoring Pinball machines. and was the best way to haul them save and dry. the bier pins would hold the machine Stabil with out having to tie them down. Loved that car.

      That's the key to a nicely stylized landau bar, it's suppose to be a hinge to lower the folding roof....so in this case, the vinyl roof canopy and the bar itself together is to give the impression of the entire roof folding back........clearly it doesn't, but that;s what it's suppose to look like.....

Was a cool ride and freaked most people out because I always arrived to school early (zero period) which meant i left early too, so for a few months nobody knew who drove it. It was just therr in the morning and gone when everyone got out of school. Blast during Halloween too.

    I’ve owned multiple hearses and seeing this I know what struggles are involved especially when they sit out in the elements for so many years. Funeral cars were meant to be garage kept. The makers built these with the intention of them not being left outside. They do leak a lot of water inside and always have a musty and mildew smell to the inside. Pretty sure all that one needs is a fuel pump and a change of fluids and a fresh battery. A nice set of white walls too

    I own a 1995 Cadillac Hearse. As a hot rodder I was looking for a enclosed parts hauler with a nice V8. My search for a panel van, station wagon or a hearse, lead me to the hearse. To quote Dan Akroyd "It's a Cadillac!" Plus it is just so cool!

  • @deanayer3822
    @deanayer3822 9 місяців тому +35

    That "symbol" on the back is a Landau bar which you see on Landau tops or roofs. It originally was a decorative metal hinge that allowed you to fold down a leather or cloth top on a car. The circle in the middle and on the two ends would be the pivot points. Clearly this isn't going to retract but that is the origin of the styling cue you are looking at. ...oh and after I write this I see five other people nailed it in an hour - I guess this just adds more proof LOL.

    The s-shaped bar on the outside of the Hearse you asked about this episode is solely a payback to the 18th century when they used to have hurses that were actually horse carriages! They had a pull down canopy top, and that is to emulate the hinge that was the main support for that canopy top, it has no current meaning to the individual hearse that it's on now, but it's called an S-bar part of the Landau top. There's a little bit of history for you .

    I own a hearse- a 1971 Cadillac Superior coach hearse that I purchased from my manager who bought it to advertise for Spirit Halloween in my hometown. He used it from 2010 to 2015 (I think) and he abandoned it shortly after. I purchased it this year after having been sitting in a field for years and hauled it out of there. It was completely gutted behind the front bench seat, leaving a floor and frame for the casket deck. Before it was purchased by my manager, it was used in a ski resort to haul passengers up and down the mountain and was fitted with two red bench seats in the middle of the car, and it was given a trunk-like carpeted floor to store gear and equipment. I wish I knew where to find parts to restore it, but it serves as a cool bit of history with a neat story. Thought it'd be appropriate to share the story here.
    And to answer your question about the bar above the rear quarters, that's a Landau bar. Served mainly for decoration throughout the years but it came from convertible roofs from funeral coaches of old when they were horse-driven. I also see this one looks like a superior coach judging by the big chrome bar separating the middle doors from the rear section.

    I have not only seen a hearse but I’ve driven many of them numerous times.
    Back in the 80s I was an EMT on an ambulance for about five years. We also had a removal contract with the city.
    Basically we would respond to emergency calls. When we arrived if the person expired and was pronounced dead we would bring our ambulance back to the garage and go back and pick them up with the Removal Car / Hearse and take them where they needed to go, funeral home, or morgue.
    We would also get hired by funeral homes and private citizens to pick up the remains and take there where they needed to be.
    It was an unusual experience each time.

      Yup a great motor. Good old dexcool, from when I had my Cadillac I always heard to flush it all out if going back to green or green had been added. Not immediate carnage but apparently they don't play well together. I kept the factory spec coolant but flushed to be safe anyway. Since the previous owner once cleared snow with a steel ice shovel I had doubts as to maintenance 😂.

    • @gdi9320
      @gdi9320 8 місяців тому

      @cardinaloflannagancr8929 the early formula for dexcool was awful for gaskets, then again this is when GM started to cheapen out even further wkth gasket material too. Yes all older GMs should get is flushed out completely. It's a refined formula now. But coolant formulas whether green, red or clear has come a long way from 20+ years ago.

    I have owned over thirty vehicles in my lifetime, including two hearses. Okay, one was a 1963 Pontiac Bonneville Superior combo hearse, meaning that it had a dual purpose, able to function as both a hearse, and as an ambulance. I have also owned a 1968 Cadillac Fleetwood Miller Meteor hearse, which was my daily driver for several years. It had a 472 V8, and got approximately 9 mpg in the city, and 11 mpg on the highway, yet this was my favorite vehicle ever!!! I had moved to St. Louis with my then girlfriend at the time, and I took both of my hearses with me, and sold my other cars at the time. We lived there for a year, and then moved to my current location. With less than a week left in our apartment lease, my girlfriend (she had moved there a couple of months prior to my arrival) realized that the lease was up a month earlier than what she had thought. With all of the preparation for the move clear across country, I didn't locate a reasonably priced transporter for my vehicles, and was forced to sell them at the last minute. A friend purchased my Cadillac for something ridiculous like $200 or $300, only to find out a few months later that it had been stolen off the street in front of his home. That Cadillac was my favorite vehicle ever, for numerous reasons. I have been meaning to acquire another Cadillac hearse, but just haven't had much time to devote to such a search. Often, these types of vehicles will fall into your lap unexpectedly rather than acquiring that rare find before anybody else does. The little amount of time I have devoted to finding another at a decent, reasonable price, and in good working order, has yielded little results. Most of the time, somebody else beat me to some decent deal I would have purchased if I had the opportunity, or the seller is asking far too much, or at least far too much in my perspective, and won't budge at all on the asking price . . . or the vehicle is simply located too far away from my location, and I will not purchase any used vehicle sight unseen. Additionally, there are more, and more people developing a sincere interest in owning a hearse, so the whole supply and demand relation is more skewed because of more interest, and less availability, or at least less in regards to the older hearses which I have a greater fondness for. The one in this video is a model made somewhere between '93 and '96, which I wouldn't pass up at the right price, but I am drawn more towards the stylings of the older vehicles, pre-1970. I'm guessing it is a 1994 model, am I right?
    It's good to see someone actually provide some loving care to these incredibly unique vehicles, rather than just letting them sit somewhere, slowly rotting away!!!

    I’m a funeral professional not currently working in the industry. My first hearse ride was when I was 8, as my dad worked for a limo service that rented them, and later on went to drive for a funeral home. Imagine a long hangar-style garage with at least 4 hearses, and about a dozen limos, with sedans tucked in as well. I remember when this new Cadillac Commercial chassis came out in 1993, it was a huge departure for most people from the classic Caddy style, but still had the size and the presence. I still own a 1996 Fleetwood Brougham sedan with the same awesome LT1 5.7L engine, the sedan that this chassis is based upon.
    This one is built by Miller Meteor, 95 or 96 based on the door rear view mirrors. Miller Meteor is a now defunct coach builder, being absorbed into the company which is now called Accu-built in Lima, OH.

    So neat to watch these transformations. I’m curious if you could remove that barrier behind the front seats? Then remove some or all of that floor and put a big comfy back seat in there. The mounting holes may be there already. You would have a really cool Cadillac Station Wagon.

    Those diagonal irons on the rear quarter panel of hearses are called “landau bars.” They are purely decorative today, but they once served a purpose and are now in place as a nod to history. The landau carriage was invented in Germany in the mid-18th century. Lightweight and suspended on elliptical springs, this four-in-hand coach was a precursor to today’s convertible cars in that it had a collapsible roof. The soft folding top on the original model was divided into two sections, front and rear, which were latched in the center. An elongated external hinge mechanism was necessary to support the folding roof, and since the pricey landau was designed as a luxury vehicle for the upper classes, designers added the elegant S-shaped scroll to the utilitarian hinges to make them more aesthetically appealing.

    I can think of maybe 3 companies that made hearses: Miller-Meteor, S and S, Slayers and Scoville, Cotner-Bevington. Some of the older hearses had 3-way operation. You could take the casket out the back, or there was a turntable built into the car in which you could turn the casket and take it out either side door as well.

    I'm a 70 yr old man that has been driving Hearses since I was 16. My 1st was a 1964 Cadillac Master Piece & my last is a 1993 Lincoln S & S, White with blue velvet interior. I bought it from a small Funeral Home in Mississippi. It was in service 30 yrs when I bought it. The coach before was a 1996 Cadillac, like the one you have. The engine on yours sounds rough, but the 5.7 corvette engine is the best GM had since the 472. It's worth fixing....

    The chrome decorations are called Landau Bars, the have no meaning or significance. They have become associated with hearses through the years as a nod to history. The engine is more than likely a LT-1, the same engine offered in early 90's Impala SS's and Buick Roadmasters, great engine, very desirable! The car is screaming for white wall tires. You can remove rust stains for fabric and carpeting with mild sulfuric acid (Erusticator) is the name of the product we used at Stanley Steemer when I worked for them in the 80's. If I found a rust spot, id apply a liitle erusticator to the stain, it would breakdown immed. the use the extractor to soap and extract the spot, rust is gone. The stain on the seat looked like rust, like from the bottom of a leaking can, try cleaning in an inconspicous spot. If drying time is an issue for upholstery, mix a couple cups of rubbing alcohol in your cleaning solution (It also breaks down sudsing immediately, this is particularly handy when cleaning delecate fabics like haitian cotton, whic is prone to brown out if it doesn't dry fast enough.

    Cool video! When you popped the hood, I got all nostalgic! This one looks like a 95, as it has folding side view mirrors. I could be wrong. GM's those years all had similarities. Chevy, Cadillac, and Buick. And the engines....
    The LT1 350 was standard in the Caddy's, Buick Roadmaster and Chevy Impala SS. The 350 could be had in the Caprice, if ordered. Otherwise, like in the 2 I had, it would be a 265 V8. They call those the Tri-9 GM's....94-96. The 265 is the engine that was in the Tri-5's, 55-57. Chevy brought the 265 back for the last 3 years of their rear wheel drive full-framed v8 Caprice and SS. They all looked pretty much the same as the one in the hearse.
    The thing about the LT1 350 is, it was a Vette motor, but was de-tuned with different heads.
    Too bad that one has a stuck valve or a bent pushrod... or a bent pushrod beCAUSE of a stuck valve....
    I'm sure someone will get that going!
