That driver's door was downright NASTY! Hard to believe how good the van is looking now! Hope you guys have a great weekend! Check out detailgeekautocare.com for the flash sale on gallons!
My husband and I were both heavy smokers with both of us going through TWO packs of cigarettes a day! One day we just quit, cold turkey. I wanted our walls painted to get rid of the smell of smoke but I didn't want them painted until they were first cleaned because they were a nasty mess and though they were supposed to be white, they were closer to brown from the years of all that smoke. We hired a cleaning service to come and do a detailed cleaning including a good cleaning of the walls and ceiling. When they got through, to my amazement we didn't need to do any painting. The walls were gorgeous! That was about 20 years ago and neither of us has smoked a cigarette since then and some of those walls STILL have not been painted and they still look great! It's amazing how much smoke can do to make your house (and your car) look and smell terrible!
Regarding the one rear door, prior to the introduction of the mini van from Chrysler, all full size passenger vans and delivery vans only had doors on one side. The door were either a sliding door or two hinged doors on the curb side. It wasn't until 1996 that two sliding door became a feature. I expect this was to prevent the rear passengers from opening the door on the driver's side and stepping into traffic. However, once moms became the principle drivers of minivans, the sliding door on the driver's side was a standard feature to enable access to the kids in the back without having to walk around to the other side of the vehicle to get kids out or to put them in. Love your videos! - Brian
I believe it was the third generation chrysler minivans that offered a second sliding door, the reason they didnt have one was for people who used the vans for work could hang stuff on it but without the risk of someone opening the door and messing stuff up
I'm sure that was part of it, but I also think it had to do with being able to exit the car if in an accident. You could get stuck inside if maybe the only exit you have is on one side, or if everyone were forced to climb out from one of the front doors. So having 2 exits in the back probably lessened the possibility of back seat passengers getting stuck or "boxed in" in the event of an emergency. Easier to exit the vehicle or at least having a higher possibility of being able to get everyone out safely.
My mom had a mini van with only one back door. She liked it because there were 4 kids, all young, and we could only get out of the car on one side so she always knew where we were, especially in parking lots. She felt at the time it was safer because she could keep a better eye on us and make sure we didn’t run out into traffic, etc. (we never did anything like that but still)
We bought our first used minivan back in 2008. At our local Toyota dealership, we looked at two used minivans. One was a 1998 Toyota Sienna and the other was, I believe, a 2002 Ford Windstar. The Ford Windstar had only one rear door, but the 1998 Toyota Sienna had two rear doors. The Toyota was in better shape and more expensive, but I am really thankful that we bought it! The Ford Windstars were terrible vehicles and our Sienna lasted us a long time with very little problems.
Such a great transformation. The attention to detail and also the results were so good. Those carpets and door panels were superb! Also, yes I would like to sit in a vehicle once the cleaning god Mitch has cleaned it. Great job and have a great weekend all!
I love watching your Yard Geek videos. I heard you talking about the channel on one of your detailing videos. Love watching a blank canvas like your yard come to life
The minivan crase began in the mid 1980s. Chrysler was one of the few that had the hatchback door instead of a standard door. The minivan is a scaled down version of the big full-sized vans. Mitch, here you teach us a rule we should follow and that is to do what is the kindest to the van. As the way some of these were built, they were designed in a way to where it was impossible to get the seats out. I used to clean an 11-passenger Dodge Ram van the two seats up front were in a way welded to the floor of the van. I think that went back to the days when Dodgew built the A-100 van in the 1960s. I remember the A-100s where parts of the front seats sat on top of the engine.
The first minivan, witch is the dodge caravan/Plymouth voyager/chrysler town and country, was actually more of a big hatchback car, than a small van, there named Caravan, not because of the actual word caravan (as in group of people), but car-van, a van that drives like a car, they were build on the 80’s and 90’s chrysler K-car platform ( the dodge spirit, Chrysler LeBaron, Dodge Aries, Dodge Shadow, Dodge Daytona, Chrysler New Yorker), they were the first front wheel drive vehicles that were not actual sedans, they were advertised as vans that drove and handled like a sedan.
The single rear door was a thing across almost all minivans for a while, the thought was to have it so kids couldn’t get out on the street side of the vehicle. Vehicle manufacturers eventually realized it was too much of an inconvenience
I watch these videos and I watch the new channel because of this one. I'm starting a side hustle detailing cars cuz you inspire me to do something I genuinely enjoy. Got my start at 15 detailing limos and I've loved detailing ever since! Thanks for sharing your talents with us!!!
At least for LHD vans, you wouldn’t want rear passengers exiting on streets from the left. That was then. And VW had multiple configurations of side doors on their Microbuses dating back to the 50’s 😉
My favorite vehicles are the ones that are 20 or more years old, and this van did not disappoint! I wouldn't be surprised if this was the first real interior detail the van had in 34 years--that was decades worth of time grime. You gave it new life--I'm sure the new owner is thrilled! Another miracle worked.
I can honestly say, Mitch, that the seatbelt receiver impressed my cold Canadian heart. I didn't think your APC and steamer could tackle that crazy stain. But, it did. I tip my hat at you.
I have 2 sets of tires, the Summer tires on the Aluminum Factory Rim and a set of Winter tires also on the Aluminum Factory Rim, because the Steel Rims rust and fall apart in 4 years. I have a set of Winter Tires on Aluminum Factory Rim and they usually last about 15 to 16 years before needing to be replaced. They also look better!
I appreciate your hard work on this van. Sometimes though people just need to let a vehicle go on to the afterlife. I can't imagine the smell would ever come out of that vehicle.
Yard geek showed up in my feed organically. I had been binging thru permaculture/garden design type stuff and your dry river bed vid came up. I was about halfway thru, thinking to myself, “that voice is familiar…” when I checked the name of the channel and was like “NO WAAAYYY!!!” Love what you’re sharing with the yard ! I hope you get a mower soon!!
Dirty, smoke filled, rusty ... but you have to respect a vehicle with 300,000 miles that is well maintained and still driving. I am glad the owner want to drive even if only for another 10,000+ miles. Thanks for cleaning it up.
The van my mum had when I was a kid only had one rear door as well and I remember that being a norm at the time. I think car designers believed it was safer for children disembarking away from the road.
😱The 34-year-old van improves better to change brand transformation after nasty dirt. You always do amazing work. Have a wonderful day and an enjoyable weekend! Stay warm 💕👏😊
Scrubbing Bubbles. Yes. The bathroom cleanser. In extreme staining cases such as the carpet or seats, it works miracles. Spot test first of course. Learned this trick from a junk yard that I bought a moldy seat from.
This was so fun to watch because I think 90% of your viewers have a van JUST like this in their immediate area LOL. It's always parked at the local Walmart or gas station. They may not all be Chrysler vans, but they are always 30 years old and look like the interior of this one.
The beauty of watching a video is that once you’ve power washed the outside I can fast forward to my favorite part: scrubbing the interior. Boy, was that ever satisfying!

Such a satisfying watch/transformation. One thing I've noticed is the little cord that comes out of the engine bay. Is that to keep the oil warm? Vehicles here in California don't have anything like that. Just wondering. Good job!
Hello! I can answer your questions about the little cord that comes out of the engine bay. Here in Canada our winters are brutally cold and that cord is connected to a block heater that we plug an outdoor cord into and the outdoor cord is plugged into an electrical outlet outside. The block heater is meant to keep the battery of vehicles from freezing up and draining the battery. Our winters can be quite brutal sometimes as cold as -50c! Even with my truck plugged in this winter I still had have a neighbor connect booster cables from his car battery to my truck battery and that helps to basically give my truck that extra kick it needs to start. Hope that answers your question!
I remember reading an article on why they didn't put a sliding door on the driver's side of the minivan. From what I recall it had to do with the fact the gas filler was on that side and due to where the tank was it couldn't be moved. I guess in later years they figured it out to where they were able to design a minivan with two sliding doors.

We had one of these growing up, light blue with the faux wood paneling on the outside. This is when Dodge/Chrysler still made remarkably reliable vehicles and our van got 500,000 miles before the transmission finally gave up. Great vehicles, even without the driver side sliding door
When this 2nd gen Caravan came out for the 1991 model year along with its sister cars, the Plymouth Voyager and Chrysler Town&Country, it was the norm to have a single sliding door on the passenger side. The thinking was that it would be safer for kids since they couldn’t open the door up and get out into the street where there could be a vehicle coming. With the generation after this, they did add the option of a driver’s side sliding door which was extremely popular and killed the single slider in the name of convenience.
It was a combination of cost, safety and ability. The structural reinforcements needed to do the sliding doors on both sides, while possible for a long time, was cost prohibitive due to the frame-off manufacturing of the time. Now with the mono bodies that pretty much everything uses, the structure is different so it's easier to build and the cost is negligible.

I believe it was the third generation chrysler minivans that offered a second sliding door, the reason they didnt have one was for people who used the vans for work could hang stuff on it but without the risk of someone opening the door and messing stuff up
@Gabie76 you are correct, it was the third gen!

Lol

This brings back memories! My parents had this same van but in white and we spent a lot of time driving in it to baseball games.
Holy crap that was one heck of a transformation! I betcha this van hasn't been this clean since 1993.

Another great vid. I had a question regarding the smoke smell, how do you tackle the headliner?
I'm all in Mitch, give this 90s van a thorough clean it never saw coming. Great transformation job, man.

Driver's side sliding doors didn't even exist back then. I can't remember the first manufacturer to offer it, but it was a game changer.
I think the 1996 Chrysler Dodge Plymouth vans were the first

It’s an engine block heater cord 👍🏻
Dude that thing was unreal how nasty it was... those freaking seats man.
