It definitely had that "wow factor" going on for it. This and Battle Arena Toshinden kept me busy for a while. I also bought a PSX for RR. I was a bit disappointed by the port, but the essence of the arcade original was there. The game is a classic. But the original hasn't aged too well compared to other racers from that time period. Daytona USA in particular...
Pocket Racer and the original PS1 port of Ridge Racer look more retro than the original arcade version. Perhaps it's the pixelation and, most of all, the font. The font used is exactly like the one Namco had used in the 1980s in games like Pac-Man, Pole Position and Winning Run.
I dont get why they havent yet.. Daytona USA came out for PS3 arcade graphic look a like Crazy taxi same thing They have to make Ridge Racer 2 1080 for PS4
This game blew me away when it was released on the Playstation. We also were lucky enough to have the full size arcade cab at our local arcade on South Parade Pier Portsmouth- safe to say it looked fantastic and must have cost them a small fortune!
The Pocket Racer is basically the “Cheat” from Ridge Racer Revolution. Its possible play as the original cars while choosing a car by pressing the right button
The only thing that I associate with Ridge Racer is a meme born out of hilarious Sony conference in 2006. As for the game itself, looks very nice for its time, though I find it surprising, that it has become popular with just one track present.
The PSP emulation of this game has taken quite a bit to mature. And I think even today it still has glitches, however they are improving. I do notice some slight frame dips and audio popping in parts, which may suggest the computer is probably at or close to its limits. However from my understanding this may be more to the emulators inefficiency than a computer performance. PPSSPP was still working on optimizing back in 2015. Still very impressive emulation performance though as I think you have mentioned before that you use a laptop for all of this. And a few tidbits I learned on Ridge Racer Turbo, that the exclusion of extra competitors on the track was in an effort to save on the PS1's limited processing power and ram so they could implement other features. You are very right in saying its more of a tech demo. Or perhaps a proof of concept. The PS1 was painfully short on system ram considering its capabilities and not having the luxury of using rom to stream game assets. Some of the little subtle things they did with this version were actually quite impressive even though it may not really seem so to most people. Better texture filtering and perspective correction leading to a substantial reduction in 'pop-in' that the ps1 was known for. Zeebo: "Hes trying his best" And Ridge Racer Pocket kind of reminds me of playing with my little dicast cars as a kid... lol
My god I was obsessed with this series when the OG Playstation first came out. It was the one game I bought with the system and I played the living hell out of it! Ended up owning every single game in the series over the years. Games like this and the very first Tekken are what made me HAVE to have a Playstation.
Same here. Even though I had a Ssturn I still played the crap out of Ridge Racer and its follow ups until part 5 on the PS2. Never have been in to Tekken though. It just doesn't click with me unlike virtua fighter if dead or alive.
@@RetroCore Ah, shame to hear that. I remember around when the Playstation first came out I walked into a Kaybee Toys and they had Tekken on a kiosk machine playing and it just blew me away. I thought the animations of the Jack character to be hilarious when he would win. If I remember right he's a robot and when he wins he pounds his chest like a Gorilla and fall over backwards. I just had to have it after seeing that. I actually can't remember where I first saw Ridge Racer but I do remember me just HAVING to have it, it had to be the first game that I bought with the system. I just always loved the way the game controlled and the drifting mechanic in it. I was able to learn how to masterfully drift pretty much right off the bat and it's just a really addictive mechanic the way the drifting works in the game. Not very realistic of course but extremely fun and rewarding to pull off. And of course the music... holy hell the music was amazing! It was actually the thing that got me into Techno music. I was like what on earth kind of music is this? And so I did some research into it and found all about Techno music. Got real big into DJ's like DJ Irene and Dieselboy and such.
What a game. It has accompanied me since I was a child. I would have loved to see the comparison of the RRV version too, it had the first redesign of the original track plus a couple very interesting more layouts that only appeared there.
There was also a mobile version of this and it was advertised on a leaflet with my Ridge Racer 6 copy. It looks pretty faithful from the looks of it and quite impressive for a 2006 mobile game.
You're not mentioning the analog namco controller , the neocon. It was made for this game. With a friend the disassembled that negcon controller and created a steering wheel complete with pedals. Back in 94 when the Japanese game and console were released.
Another thing about Pocket Racer is that you can hold the view change button in the car select screen to revert to the original cars, but can't tell if it's plain cosmetic or also adjusts handling.
Ridge Racer is great, I remember being impressed by the arcade version. The PS1 version was pretty impressive at the time and I had actually rented a PS1 over a weekend and played this game like crazy and managed to unlock everything, sadly I didn't have a memory card, so I kept the darn machine on all weekend *lol*
Loved RIdge Racer on the original playstation. For me at the time, it was perfect. I've had it on almost every incarnation of Playstation but I felt it somehow lost its way with every re-imagination of it.
Is it just me or does the original PS1 version looks more lively than the N64 port? The relative lack of pop in is nice, and there's a nice smoothed look, I guess because of the bilinear filtering, but it doesn't feel like as much is going on.
Textures played a huge role when comparing third party games on those consoles. N64 could run at a smoother frame rate, but with limited space to implement textures, the final result is a smooth spectacle of washed out graphics. Soul Reaver on PS1 is a master class on how to implement textures to compensate for relatively poor graphical punch.
Which N64 emulator did you use by the way? I find that some games work better with 1964 rather than Project 64 and vice versa. And choosing to listen to Rotterdam Nation - are you some kind of masochist?
I used Mupen64 (latest version) it seemed to give the best all-round results even if the rear view mirror was a mess. All Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution tracks are great :)
@@RetroCore Ridge Racer 7 is personally to me the best RR game of the entire franchise. It's not a whole lot different from Ridge Racer 6 but they got rid of the terrible announcer from RR6 with a better announcer, added in 1080p support and a few new tracks plus free downloadable UFRA events with some of them being super tough.
Amazing that a hand held system 13 years later could blow away £10,000 custom hardware from 1993. We were playing game boy and Atari Lynx back then to this.
It's kind of a shame they never ported Pocket Racer to the PlayStation; it looks like a hoot. It's amazing how much the PlayStation architecture was utilized during its lifetime, between the 3000+ consumer titles and many arcade PCBs.
RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDGE RACEEEEEEEEEEEE-*cough cough splutter* IMO, you can't beat the very original. So nostalgic. Has the most mid-90s-racing-game vibe ever.
Excelent episode man! a lot of nostalgia, makes me wanna play RR again all night hehe.. The first time I saw a playstation in a store in Caracas, this was one of the few games displayed, inmediately hooked me up with the console. the psp look so great truly an huge improvement from the original versions. by the way what psp emulator is that? I never could make work any psp emulator in my pcs :(
Even though I was a Saturn gay back in the day I did own all the Ridge Racer games on the PlayStation. Loved the original too. Wed spend hours aiming for the fastest lap. The PSP emulator is the latest version of PPSSPP.
Even though I was a Saturn gamer I did own all Ridger Racer PlayStation titles. We would play for hours to get the best time. The PSP emulator uses is the latest version of PPSSPP.
Yeah, that's what I talk about, I think I became like a takumi fujiwara for that only track hahahaha, and how envious hehe, I always wanted to have a Sega Saturn. Maybe someday we'll play some serious RR sessions my friend! I still have my wish to go to japan someday. thanks for the tip of the emulator i'll check it out, cool episode I'm glad you put your effort to maintain retro core, my best wishes man!
+Leonardo Antonio no problem. I hope you can get the emulator to run on your PC. I'd say you'll need at least an i3 with 4gb ram running around 2.5 ghz to run this emulator at a good speed.
The only game I was genuinely good at. I would play it a ton at home, and go to the mall and set lap records. There was a Java version on phones back in the day, and it was the proper polygon 3D version, not some outrun interpretation of a 3D Racer. I managed to get a hold of the controls and played that version too. Only version I have now is the iOS version on an old iPod touch :(. The current iOS version is trash.
I remember that! My friend had one when I lived on the Mainland. they sold them in China too. It was a sharp flip phone you could rotate the screen when playing games. Phones were more interesting then.I stuck to my Sony Phones as they had nicer cameras, and I gamed on a PSP then. @@RetroCore
Breaks my heart we didn’t get Tekken 64 which would basically be the N64 version of Tekken 2. It would also have an exclusive character to it and he’d of course be from a Nintendo IP, probably Ganondorf from the upcoming Ocarina of Time who’d be a hidden boss and unlockable character. I mean we got Ridge Racer and Resident Evil 2 on the system, why no Tekken 2 or Street Fighter Alpha 3? :( Yeah they’d be inferior (because they would somewhat slower and have blurry graphics) but it would’ve given N64 fans something to talk about back in the day. It seems neither Namco nor Capcom cares that much about the Nintendo 64 judging by the few games they put out on it. If you were a FG fan and a Nintendo fan, you must’ve had it rough. I can empathize with that. On the other hand, Sony and Sega were showered/blessed with J-fighters during that generation but Sony still gets fighters even to this day. But enough about that. Us N64 players got Ridge Racer but not Tekken. :(
One of my favourite series! I definitely like the new drifting system better than the old one as it makes playing longer sessions a lot more comfortable... And the newer games do make you re-race the same tracks over and over and over again. The DS version is , well, shit. The less said about it the better. Luckily Namco made up for that with an excellent 3DS version... but then they dropped the ball again with Unbounded. Oh well.
I had a hard time with the controls on the PlayStation games when making this video. Funny because I used to be a master at this game. I think I'll pop in Ridge Racer 6 on my 360 tonight for some nostalgia.
5 isn't bad, I just found it far too short, and doesn't too enough to make repeat playthroughs worthwhile. Also feels a bit dated, quite the relic of its time.
It feels that the developers of the awful Playstation port of Re-volt did the Zeebo version of Ridge Racer. I mean, the graphics and the sounds feel very similar to that game.
Just to note the N64 version wasn't developed by Namco but by Nintendo Software Technology (or NST for short) in the US, though likely overseen by Namco. It was only their second ever game and I always found it pretty weak compared to the PS originals. Still, it is better than the sort of port it got to the DS which to me was terrible.
that mame footage of ridge surely isn't running at 60 fps, really stuttery . did you use aviwrite or an external program ? also, yea, arcade ridge racer 1-2 and rave are life
Ignacio Guerendiain the IAP purchases kill it after a while, like most mobile games it’s less skilled based after a while. Lots of grinding to afford upgrades. The graphics are nice. The older ridge racer was a PSP port and that was a lot better.
No, not at all. The arcade really does look that crisp. It probably looks better than it does because it is followed directly by the PlayStation version which does look a bit messy. All games in this video are not using filters and are running at native texture resolution. The video is captured in 720p however but that won't make a difference to the texture quality.
+Vincent GR hmm, the capture resolution is higher but the actual game is running in its native resolution. I run all the MAME stuff in its native resolution.
I used to do the same with epsxe. Higher resolution to polygons but no filters on textures. They did look nicer than the original, especially games like Jumping Flash which run at 256x192 somthing resolution. Great vid as always mate!
+Vincent GR I should try that. I actually use epsx on my phone. Runs every games I throw at it wonderfully. I also bump up the resolution to 1080p (my phones native resolution). Looks kick arse playing Bloody Roar 2 on it :)
The Mammalizer it’s a crap game, but for a 350kb Java game it’s quite impressive and if you are stuck in traffic on a bus, it’s a better use of your Sony Ericsson Walkman phone.
Found Ridge Racer controls to be way too hard until Ridge Racer Type 4, and much preffered Daytona. I've had a ridge racer game on just about every system since (usually a release title for a new console)and is one of my favourite racing games. They just don't make 90's arcade style racers like Daytona, Burnout etc. anymore so Ridge Racer is the only place to go for arcade thrills and i'm just not that into racing sims. Ridge Racer Unbounded is a good game too though technichally not a Ridge Racer game as made by Bug Bear and only published by Namco.
I wouldn't even call Burnout arcade style racing. Daytona and Ridge Racer were the last two great arcade racers to be ever made. There are others such as Jelaco's GT24 but it's not as good as those mentioned. Since the end if the 90s there been no new really cool home arcade racers IMO. The best seemed to be cart based.
I meant the arcade style of racing from point to point through traffic an bright colours, it was heavily infulenced by the classic Outrun. Kart racers are a lot of fun love Mario Kart and Sonic Transformed.
Don't know why Sega recently are not making or licensing remakes of their arcade hits for consoles to other developers, i'm sure Sumo Digital could make a great version of Daytona having previously coded Out Run 2 / Coast 2 Coast and the Sonic Racing games. I used to get excited about going to the arcades and playing a Sega "sit on" racer, Hang On, Out Run, V.R. Racing, Daytona, Sega Rally, Scud Race.
I have a soft spot for RR 64, since I played the DS port, one of the few great racing games on the console... Except if you try to play the idiotic Stylus driving mode, which is awful.
Students?! That's very impressive indeed. I had not realized you were emulating the N64, I checked out videos on real hardware and it runs perfectly. I'm surprised emulation of the N64 is still so crummy.
I wanna know how the PSP Ridge Racer REALLY looked. Because on my emulator, I can have it play with super awesome graphics but then the game will be played at only 30fps. If I go to the standard graphics with effects on cars (which still looks great but not as smooth and sharp) it goes to 60fps. Hard for me to decide which I like playing on more, but I think the fps for me wins over the graphics. Bigger difference in the gameplay then the graphics. How was the PSP version???
Textures, the fundamental reason behind the N64's demise. PlayStation's first Ridge Racer looks better than the revised N64 game mainly because of that.
+Retro Core I had it for my PSP. It is really smooth! The slight auto-steering made it so you could pull off ridiculous stunts, like doing 360s, or even drifting the "wrong" way! You did forget to mention that you could even play New Rally-X on it, and you'd unlock special cars if you scored a lot of points!
If you count RR64, why not RRDS? They're basically the same game with the most minor of changes content wise, but there'll be some interesting graphical sacrifices made.
There's a steering wheel down on the touch screen, which you can drag around to steer instead of using the d-pad, but it's really awkward to use. The list of other changes is small enough to the point where it's just a subsection of RR64 on Wikipedia.
One answer, money from Sony. Both Ridge Racer and CyberSled were in development for the Saturn. CyberSled I even saw with my very own eyes at a trade show. But Sony needed exclusives and Namco was one of the major Japanese studios. For Europe they got Psygnosis.
+Retro Core It does run at 60/50fps, of course depending upon the reigon. There is an "original mode" in RR Turbo that shows the original game, without the texture and framerate updates.
I've always disliked the N64 version. Even running through RGB it looks unattractive. The music is also weak. I much prefer all the Ridge Racer games on the PS1. Someday, I'd like to own a Ridge Racer arcade machine, as it's such a feel-good game.
mightbeen very late. the reason for the soundtrack change is property because N64 music was not cd audio, but more used tracker based music instead, due this type uses much less filesize on the cartridge, so its does make seance. The 12 songs on the game was taking about 12.7mb. the cd take much much more.
+Lord Alfajor It looks awful because it's running on what is basically PlayStation hardware in an arcade cabinet. That is the original resolution too. Looks no worse that PlayStation Ridge Racer to be honest. I guess the smaller cars make it look worse.
This and Toh Shin Den solid me the PlayStation and I hated racing games, it simply blew everything around at the time away. The Saturn looked inferior by comparison with Sega doing such a terrible job with Daytona USA and rushing it out.
I don't mind Ridge Racer blowing people away because it's a good game but Toshinden was so bad. When people would actually say it was a great fighter drive me nuts. It did look impressive but man, it's awful to play. I have all 5 Toshinden games on the PlayStation (yep, there's 5 of them) and they're all crap 😂
I know how to play Ridge Racer perfectly well. Or should that say I knew how to play Ridge Racer perfectly well. It's been 20 years since I played the original when making this video.
I don't believe that, I haven't played it in a long long time too and I know I can pick it up and do 10x better than this. Maybe you never played it well more than likely. Let go of the button and drift, choose the multi colored car for a good combination.

The font used is exactly like the one Namco had used in the 1980s in games like Pac-Man, Pole Position and Winning Run.
Imagine the reaction if Namco had managed to have the performance of the turbo version in the original version
Sadly the 60htz version only has one car
I want the arcade versions of RR1 and RRR to be released on PS4 with 60fps 1080p. That'd blow my mind!
Ridge Racer Revelution wasn't an arcade game. Maybe you're thinking of Rave Racer which never got a console port.
@@RetroCore I believe Ridge Racer Revolution was Ridge Racer 2 at the arcades. Or maybe Ridge Racer 2 and Rave Racer are the same game?
I dont get why they havent yet..
Daytona USA came out for PS3 arcade graphic look a like
Crazy taxi same thing
They have to make Ridge Racer 2 1080 for PS4
@@MegaFCKforever Yeah, I hear ya. I have the Daytona port on Ps3 and it's perfect. I prefer the RR's though still.
This game blew me away when it was released on the Playstation. We also were lucky enough to have the full size arcade cab at our local arcade on South Parade Pier Portsmouth- safe to say it looked fantastic and must have cost them a small fortune!
+wrena79 I actually played that one in Portsmouth. Blackpool had one too but someone had damaged the door handle :(
+Retro Core wow really!? Spent a large portion of my childhood on that arcade 😃
The Golden Horseshoe arcade next to the fun fare on Portsmouth sea front, yep that is where I used to play the full scale version too.
The Pocket Racer is basically the “Cheat” from Ridge Racer Revolution. Its possible play as the original cars while choosing a car by pressing the right button
Oh man, that midi soundtrack on the Zeebo version is killing me, especially how they tried to imitate the vocal samples.
The Zeebo seems to have a decent soundfont at least :]
I love this game! It's one of my favorites alongside with Tekken and Crash Bandicoot.
The RR Type-4 included “Demo Version” is called “Hi-Spec Ver.”. ^^
The only thing that I associate with Ridge Racer is a meme born out of hilarious Sony conference in 2006.
As for the game itself, looks very nice for its time, though I find it surprising, that it has become popular with just one track present.
the music in this game is great. When I play it the speakers with the volume at the max level
Zeebo: "Hes trying his best"
And Ridge Racer Pocket kind of reminds me of playing with my little dicast cars as a kid... lol
Thx for this comparison,i love this game so much since we met the first time :)
PS1 can't be beat IMO. It's so iconic!!
+Mr Know Nothing Intro stated the Zeebo version is identical to the US mobile version, so yeah...
It should also be noted that the N64 version wasn't really programmed by Namco, but in fact Nintendo's NST team. Great video as always.
+NeoSamus That's right. For an N64 racing game it's very impressive. Nice textures, good frame rate (Better than this video shows) and quality audio.
+Retro Core did you also consider including the DS version? Or was that one too similar to the N64?
NeoSamus
Ah, I forgot all about the DS version :( Does that feature the original arcade track?
+Retro Core Yes it does! It is a port of the N64 version.
+MeebleMeeble I don't know. I thought Ridge Racers was just Ridge Racer but renamed for other areas.
You're not mentioning the analog namco controller , the neocon. It was made for this game. With a friend the disassembled that negcon controller and created a steering wheel complete with pedals. Back in 94 when the Japanese game and console were released.
I know about that controller but I doubt most other people know of its existence. Normally on these videos I don't talk about optional controllers.
Have you tried the negcon yourself ? You can race in ridge racer long track and , can avoid hitting the walls .
yes, I used it back in the day. It was okay to use but not something I'd use over a wheel.
I've always freaking loved Ridge Racer. Better than Daytona USA IMO!
Nah, it's great but Daytona has more to it. But that's just my opinion 😊
Another thing about Pocket Racer is that you can hold the view change button in the car select screen to revert to the original cars, but can't tell if it's plain cosmetic or also adjusts handling.
Cool. I didn't know about that. I would imagine in just being a skin rather that the original cars plus physics.
Biggest flaw of the PlayStation. No built in memory and saving to the cards took way too long. Saving to a Saturn memory card was instantaneous.
Loved RIdge Racer on the original playstation. For me at the time, it was perfect. I've had it on almost every incarnation of Playstation but I felt it somehow lost its way with every re-imagination of it.
Ah, I think Ridge Racer 5 was the last true Ridge Racer game. Everything after that was not Ridge Racer.
Is it just me or does the original PS1 version looks more lively than the N64 port? The relative lack of pop in is nice, and there's a nice smoothed look, I guess because of the bilinear filtering, but it doesn't feel like as much is going on.
So true. The blurred graphics make the N64 version look a bit diluted but for a N64 Racer it is very good.
Pocket Racer is basically a PS1 running RR Revolution with the pocket car cheat enabled.
Awesome work as always,thanx!
@@RetroCore The framerate on Mupen64 is horrible, you should've stuck with Project 64 for RR64.
I love how it says "Weebo" at the end.
Yep, good old typos.
Could've sworn that was intentional.
Toni CounterLife
It wa actually a typo but I left it in as it's pretty funny in a way.
why not add Ridge Racer 5, and 7 into the mix. They feature the original course aswell. Dont know if 6 has it but i assume it does.
I don't own Ridge Racer 7 :(
@@RetroCore Ridge Racer 7 is personally to me the best RR game of the entire franchise.
It sure is. Technology moves so fast.
What a coincidence. I was playing this game on my PC yesterday, and this morning your BOTP popped up. Great video of a fun game.
Nice 👍. Google is watching you 😋
didn´t remember that wipeout type of soundtrack in playstation version XD
It's kind of a shame they never ported Pocket Racer to the PlayStation; it looks like a hoot. It's amazing how much the PlayStation architecture was utilized during its lifetime, between the 3000+ consumer titles and many arcade PCBs.
it is ported in RRRevolution , it is hidden in the game
Ridge Racer Turbo? Do you mean Hi-Spec Demo?
Ah maybe. This is such an old video that I don't remember.
RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDGE RACEEEEEEEEEEEE-*cough cough splutter*
IMO, you can't beat the very original. So nostalgic. Has the most mid-90s-racing-game vibe ever.
So true. The music, in your face announcer and vibrant colours. Classic.
On ridge racer type 4 the 2nd disc or disc 2 will play ridge racer turbo alongside with playable demos and videos of namco games
Excellent arcade racer.
oder Best racing game !!! on Arcade ...
It deffinety is one of the all time classics, that's for sure.
I kinda wish you'd have played the games in their original resolution. It would make the difference between the ports more noticeable.
+TheHermitArcana They are played in their original resolution. Just captured in 720p
Retro Core Nope, everything is far sharper than its supposed to be.
All right, that's almost exactly the specs my pc currently have, I'll try man, thanks for the info!
The Zeebo version... with that music... was kind of hilarious!
It's pretty much the same as the Japanese mobile phone versions.
You forgot rave racer, it has original RR1 track
The only game I was genuinely good at. I would play it a ton at home, and go to the mall and set lap records. There was a Java version on phones back in the day, and it was the proper polygon 3D version, not some outrun interpretation of a 3D Racer. I managed to get a hold of the controls and played that version too. Only version I have now is the iOS version on an old iPod touch :(. The current iOS version is trash.
We had a wide screen mobile version in Japan back before smartphones were a thing. It was really cool.
I remember that! My friend had one when I lived on the Mainland. they sold them in China too. It was a sharp flip phone you could rotate the screen when playing games. Phones were more interesting then.I stuck to my Sony Phones as they had nicer cameras, and I gamed on a PSP then. @@RetroCore
Yep, that's the one. I had 2 different sharp phones that flipped the screen.
Retro Core nice. Now with smart phones especially android ones we are spoiled for retro games
Indeed. Android is amazing for games and emulation.
Who TF actually play the game like this? It's like first person view if you're the damn headlights...
Great episode.
I really wonder what Street Fighter would have looked like. Tekken 64 I can kind of imagine.
I think I'll pop in Ridge Racer 6 on my 360 tonight for some nostalgia.
i remember rly like r4, but was their bonus disc rr turbo edition which make me go back .... and then be dissapointed with rr5
is 5 that bad?
5 isn't bad, I just found it far too short, and doesn't too enough to make repeat playthroughs worthwhile. Also feels a bit dated, quite the relic of its time.
right now i just remmeber those jaggies on the corners...
It feels that the developers of the awful Playstation port of Re-volt did the Zeebo version of Ridge Racer. I mean, the graphics and the sounds feel very similar to that game.
The Zeebo Ridge Racer is based upon a western mobile phone port from what I understand. I'm not sure who developed it though.
Great vid.
Zeebo needs a whole episode
I agree.
Just to note the N64 version wasn't developed by Namco but by Nintendo Software Technology (or NST for short) in the US, though likely overseen by Namco. It was only their second ever game and I always found it pretty weak compared to the PS originals. Still, it is better than the sort of port it got to the DS which to me was terrible.
that mame footage of ridge surely isn't running at 60 fps, really stuttery . did you use aviwrite or an external program ? also, yea, arcade ridge racer 1-2 and rave are life
Nope, this is a really old video so I was probably using an underpowered video at that point.
You miss the (surprisingly ok) mobile one: Ridge Racer Slipstream
Ignacio Guerendiain the IAP purchases kill it after a while, like most mobile games it’s less skilled based after a while. Lots of grinding to afford upgrades. The graphics are nice. The older ridge racer was a PSP port and that was a lot better.
The psp version does it for me and if you're not happy with it then just put the ps one game on your psp. A no brainer
3:18 unless you’ve got a NeGcon...
8:00 Oh my god that’s the same as Ridge Racer DS lmao
Are you using higher resolutions than the original games?
Seems tha polugons are smoother than the real thing.
No, not at all. The arcade really does look that crisp. It probably looks better than it does because it is followed directly by the PlayStation version which does look a bit messy. All games in this video are not using filters and are running at native texture resolution. The video is captured in 720p however but that won't make a difference to the texture quality.
Retro Core Yes that is what I said :-D
Smoother polygons not textures.
So the resolution is higher.
You missed the best version!
The mobile phone version.
+Craig Wilson Sonic all star racing and transformed are fantastic games but I would love another Daytona system arcade Racer.
+Craig Wilson those days are sadly gone it would seem :(
I have a soft spot for RR 64, since I played the DS port, one of the few great racing games on the console... Except if you try to play the idiotic Stylus driving mode, which is awful.
You would think the N64 could easily handle a PS1 launch title, with it being the newer console.
To be fair, the N64 port was actually made by programming students! Not a bad job all things considered.
Students?! That's very impressive indeed. I had not realized you were emulating the N64, I checked out videos on real hardware and it runs perfectly. I'm surprised emulation of the N64 is still so crummy.
To be fair this is an old video so I was most likely using an underpowered Toshiba laptop at that time for the emulation.
I don't remember. I haven't pkayed it in years
omg that n64 frame rate...
Too bad you didn't include the RRV for the PS2. That game had many variations of the famous 765 track.
No 3ds version, wtf!!? Regarding the PSP emulation, you should use the core that is in RetroArch, plays flawlessly
I forgot all about the 3DS version. I'll try the PSP emulation settings you suggest but the computer the emulation runs on isn't that powerful.
Speaking about that, there is also the DS version that wasn't released in Japan, like RR64. But it's also a lot like RR64.
I've never heard of a Zeebo ?
+Martin Sutcliffe Brazilian game console, mostly running java-based mobile games
Nobody heard of it as a matter of fact
Even ourselves don't pay attention to Zeebo
Textures, the fundamental reason behind the N64's demise. PlayStation's first Ridge Racer looks better than the revised N64 game mainly because of that.
psp version wins but the n64 version sounds like a tractor engine lol
remind me: it was about that time the whole euro trance megamix trendy time?
Or in Japan they like to call it Euro Beat. But yeah, it's around that time.
gotta love those 20fps on n64
The poor N64 never could produce a good racing game. There are many on the system but they all suffer from either poor frame rates or heavy fog 🙁
Gt 64,FzeroX,Mario Kart 64,Diddy Kong 64,Cruiis in World were great N64 racing games
The REAL game is 60 fps on de 64, but he played on an shitty emulator i guess...
the psp version is Sweet.
+Matthew Leo It sure is. Just whish I had a real PSP to play the game on.
Because I didn't have access to the DS game unless I bought it.
Fair enough, it's not that imperative that it's there, since 64 is already there. I've got it, so I might have to give RRDS another shot now.
I would have liked to have featured it but since I don't have a flash card for my 3DS it was a no go :(
There's a steering wheel down on the touch screen, which you can drag around to steer instead of using the d-pad, but it's really awkward to use. The list of other changes is small enough to the point where it's just a subsection of RR64 on Wikipedia.
I have a question, why does Namco hate the Sega Saturn?!
One answer, money from Sony. Both Ridge Racer and CyberSled were in development for the Saturn. CyberSled I even saw with my very own eyes at a trade show. But Sony needed exclusives and Namco was one of the major Japanese studios. For Europe they got Psygnosis.
Can’t hear the BGM in the N64 version at all. 😂
Just as well. Its not as good as the original.
RR Turbo Tech Demo does not have 60 fps.
According to the paperwork that came with my copy it does. Sure seems smother running.
+Retro Core It does run at 60/50fps, of course depending upon the reigon. There is an "original mode" in RR Turbo that shows the original game, without the texture and framerate updates.
It totally does, super obvious when you run it. But somehow the gameplay footage in this review does not show it at all. Probably a recording mistake.
Wait didn’t nintendo develop Ridge Racer 64?
Watched and subscribed!
Thanks Victor. Welcome to the channel.
Retro Core What version of Ridge Racer is your favorite?
17 that camera is horrible. At least the drift mecanic make it escape
I've always disliked the N64 version. Even running through RGB it looks unattractive. The music is also weak. I much prefer all the Ridge Racer games on the PS1. Someday, I'd like to own a Ridge Racer arcade machine, as it's such a feel-good game.
Kingston LJ Absolute nonsense.
mightbeen very late. the reason for the soundtrack change is property because N64 music was not cd audio, but more used tracker based music instead, due this type uses much less filesize on the cartridge, so its does make seance. The 12 songs on the game was taking about 12.7mb. the cd take much much more.
Is that the resolution that run on the original Pocket Racer? In which year it was launched? It looks really awful!
+Lord Alfajor It looks awful because it's running on what is basically PlayStation hardware in an arcade cabinet. That is the original resolution too. Looks no worse that PlayStation Ridge Racer to be honest. I guess the smaller cars make it look worse.
*****
Yeah, the errors of saying stuff you knew were wrong but didn't notice after the editing was complete :(
This and Toh Shin Den solid me the PlayStation and I hated racing games, it simply blew everything around at the time away.
A "Zeebo", what the frick is "Zeebo"?
A Brazilian exclusive mobile phone level game console that had no physical media for it. Think of an Ouya but way before that existed.
If your going to play this game at least learn the easy drift mechanic
I know how to play Ridge Racer perfectly well. Or should that say I knew how to play Ridge Racer perfectly well. It's been 20 years since I played the original when making this video.
I don't believe that, I haven't played it in a long long time too and I know I can pick it up and do 10x better than this. Maybe you never played it well more than likely. Let go of the button and drift, choose the multi colored car for a good combination.
