    I was prescribed Prolia for Osteoporosis and was not told about side effects. When my teeth starting breaking without cavities I started asking all the doctors and dentists if it could be a medication and they said no. Finally, after asking a lot and having most of my teeth broken and Oral Surgeon told me that it was Prolia. My jaws and gums are so damaged that I can do anything about it and now all I have in my mouth are broken teeth. Please do not use Prolia

    Thank you for explaining the risks of Prolia. I was 59 when I started Forsamax after minor fractures from a 1m fall. After 4 years, my DEXA scan showed no improvement. The Endocrine specialist insisted that Prolia was my only option.She claimed that the benefits outweigh the risks. However after some research I decided against it. It's been 3 years and my DEXA scan has not improved or worsened. Your video has further convinced me that my decision was correct.

    I had severe bone pain in various parts of my body after one Prolia injection. It easily lasted six months and negatively impacted every day (I normally feel excellent). I've also suffered numerous broken teeth and significant dental problems since that injection. I've sworn off all osteoporosis drugs since.

      Took 4 injections and felt like I was on chemo getting sicker. I stopped, but told it would affect my bones worse now. I now need a knee replacement, neck surgery and recently broke an ankle. Don’t do it. By the way, always athletic, small frame with scoliosis’ Harrington rods. This disease sucks and being almost 70 and atrophy has set in. 😩

      I took two Envinity shots. It’s ruined my life I have RA it’s like being in the worst flare ever all the time I can’t get rid of it. On a Monday I got the infinity shot and my jaw hurt at night. The doctor told me this was not possible I said OK well I’m not doing any more shots. He talked me into one more just one more, now my neck is killing me and my left thigh. I’m going back to my neck surgeon who did surgery on my neck last year to see what’s wrong because after he fixed my neck, nothing hurt and now the pain just won’t leave me alone and I’m on pain meds.

    I took one injection of Prolia back in 2017. I had a severe adverse reaction to it. Extremely sore and stiff joints and bone pain in my thighs and shoulders. Hands were stiff every morning. Took approximately 18 months to get out of my system. My doctor as well as myself attempted to contact the drug company, and bottom line they really did not care about the adverse effects. I absolutely refuse to put any of those medications in my body. Since then, I have only used natural calcium supplements, Vitamin D3, Vitamin K2 mk7. From one of your videos, I did order a supplement that has the calcium hydroxyapatite in it. I make every effort to eat a lot of greens and watch my diet. I walk every day along with some light weight bearing exercises. This past Dex scan showed a slight improvement. Thank you for the information on your site, I am finding it very helpful.

      I began to feel a loss of balance & confidence after beginning Prolia, until I added daily doses of collagen peptides. In my second year now ( age 83) I feel renewed confidence, balance, and perhaps even strength. Reportedly Collagen supplementation is considered ill advised, however, I am experiencing far more beneficial results than before. This discussion is informative, and I’d like to continue following. BTW, my daily exercise includes daily “ doggie walks” of 20-40 minutes whenever possible ( in Maine), some yoga, and doing my own housekeeping.

    I was mortified to learn her Dr put her on this. She doesn't have osteoporosis, just mild osteopenia! They used fear porn every year to get another dose into her. After a little education and a trip to the dentist, which raised that concern, she was convinced to take no more and told the drs to take another look at her test results. They very reluctantly agreed. She now takes boron and other multi minerals and does resistance training at Kieser 3x/week. She turns 86 this year and has some falls without any breakages. These industries need independent regulation. Enough of big (p)Harma

    I simply went on the website and read peoples comments taking the drug. So many people were very upset they ever started the drug, a huge number of complaints about side effects. That was enough to convince me to steer clear of it. I was on Fosamax then Boniva and after 10 years I went off completely. Since then I broke my humerus but only because I fell off a motorcycle. I also took a fall off a bench and broke two toes because my foot hit the wall on the way down BUT no vertebral FX’s or hop FX’s. It is SO important to do your own research people, do not do something because it is recommended. Some Doctors do not research anything they just follow protocols period.

    Very good video again. Thanks. Someone I know came off Prolia and was put on a Biphosphonate. So the period for the follow-up biphosphonate is determined by the length of time you took Prolia or by the data that is available for biphosphonates in general?

    I am so glad I came across these video’s. I’ve been one 2 years of annual Aclasta drips. At 43, I was diagnose with osteoporosis and my first two vertebrae fractures (T6 & T11). As a result of the Aclasta, I had a retinal tear just to name one adverse effect. In Febr we repeated the Dexa scan. At the moment I have a fracture at levels T7, T8,T9,T11 &T12. In 2022, I had a vertobroplasty for T6 and T10. My endocrinologist wanted to put me on Forteo, which my medical aid declined. Now she wants to start me on Prolia. I also have 2 stable meningioma’s ( I had a craniotomy in Nov 2020), I am on Topamax for seizure management after that. After my resent Dexa scan my dr has admitted me to hospital for tests regarding these multiple fractures. She discovert distal RTMA. I’v been in menopause for the past 2 years. They don’t want to put me on HRT because of the meningioma, although I think something like Menostar that is estrogen will be fine.
    The more I hear about Prolia the more I want to run. I am still young(45).

I did all my long-distance cycling after my second hip fracture at age 45. I had a diagnosis of osteopenia via DEXA 8 or 9 years ago. Prescribed fosamax but did not take it. Recently with diagnosis of PMR and on low dose prednisone for 2 months, planning to stop at 3. I have bone pathology on MRI of spine, but the spinal doctor is not worried. No surgery required and not experiencing pain. My dilemma. I’ve been encouraged (strongly) to go on either fosamax or prolia which I am resistant to doing. I’m in the medical profession and researching everthing on this subject. I’d no idea of of CTX and P1NP. I like what I am hearing. I live both in Ireland (domiciled) and USA. I would love to chat with your team. Thank you for your dedicated research and information.

    Prolia was so expensive even with insurance. Doctor said I had to take 2000 mgof calcium a day with it. Took it for three years then he tells me he doesn’t understand but results were worse. Ordered X-rays and with cat scan they see calcium was going to my main aorta and caused an anorism. I immediately came off it and of course he was not happy. Been off it and on vitamins. Staying mainly the same. Of course I still have to worry about my anorism. That’s my story. It’s all poison .

It was a tough decision but even those opposed to any meds said it would be beneficial. I’ve had no known side effects and I’m in excellent health. My bone density is now characterized as osteopenia. I very glad with the results however I was not told about effects after going off. I will certainly be looking into that!

    This was extremely helpful. I've recently been diagnosed with Osteoporsis and have been recommended to start prolia injections. I am 56 years old. Menopause happened at 45. L1-L4 T is -2.9. Z-score is -2.0., BMD 0.721. Hip T is -1.7, Z is -1.2. BMD is 0.783. Femoral Neck is -2.0, Z is -0.9. BMD 0.695. Don't know if you can make a recommendation. Should I start Prolia or can I increase weight bearing exercise and take supplements?? I really don't want to take Prolia. I am healthy but I haven't been exercising regularly for about 2 years. Would prefer to treat this naturally if I can and am committed to do so. I have never had a fracture. The report also stated that there was a significant decrease in the total hip and femoral neck since the last report 3 years ago which is why the prolia is recommended. Hope all of this information is okay. Thank you.

    Just (finally) saw endocrinologist. He's doing a bunch more tests--yay! Said because my case is severe and I am younger (62) I needed a stronger drug than fosamax. (Also, he said any "pill stuck" feeling was not good, with this drug, so don't take it, (PCP said, "Take TUMS, extra calcium is a bonus," when I told him about it.) But after the year of evenity, he said most likely reclast, then Prolia. He said that would get us out...7-10 years? (Can't remember exactly.) I wasn't surprised, but guess I'd hoped we could do the one year of evenity and see--if addressing other issues helped, etc.? But I guess (heard it through grapevine?) you don't just stop evenity either? You have to be on a relay drug?
    Well, one year at a time, I guess. (If my insurance will cover evenity...he said he didn't think there'd be an issue since I can document fractures. 😮)

      @Dr_DougLucas  9 місяців тому +2

      Common challenge!
      "Take TUMS" is advice from 1970s. TUMS are poorly absorbed and not ideal in my eyes.
      Evenity is a powerful tool. I have a video pending on this topic. Just like Prolia there is a recommendation to go on a second drug after Evenity. I do work with people trying to avoid the second drug option. It's reasonable to do but only with a solid plan and close monitoring. We do the same with Prolia.

    My endocrinologist told me that it was simple to transition off orolia by taking bisphosphonates. I was skeptical. Is that a bonafide, research based transition plan? Can you comment please? I insisted with my doc that I need a 20 year plan at least at age 70 and not to talk about Prolia until after 80. Already experienced the devastating effects of my mom going off Prolia suddenly. I wish I knew more then so I could have intervened!

    • @Dr_DougLucas
      @Dr_DougLucas  9 місяців тому +3

      Hello,
      There are multiple studies that recommend switching from Prolia to bisphosphonates after 5 to 10 years.
      The challenge that I see with this is that this is still not a 20 year plan. This is a maximum 15 year plan and you’re right, what is the solution at 70, 80 or 90?
      So, whenever possible, we try to find a comprehensive solution that will delay or eliminate the need for osteoporosis drugs.

    Thanks for this explanation. I knew coming off the drug was a very serious issue but I did not realise that the bone turnover was suppressed in this way. I was 65 when I was diagnosed with osteoporosis of the spine and the doctor said to go on Prolia and I’d have to take if for the rest of my life. I said to her if I lived till 85 that would be 20 years on this drug. Is that safe? What are the longer term risks? She said they didn’t have any data on that period of use but it is a safe drug. That’s when I started doing some research and was horrified about the bone loss rebound effects. I stopped trusting my doctor given her cavalier attitude. I think the evidence does clearly show increased bone density achieved with it but at the back of my head I just thought this was somehow interfering too much with what should be a natural and necessary body function - break down and build up bone and you have clarified that in your video.

    Yep. 15 years ago i had a severe reaction to a biphosphanate infusion...i was told i could have no more. End of story until 15 years later when an endodontist asked me had i had this drug previously. There was no hand out, no discussion about risks when i had the infusions. now, i have been identified as having necrosis of the jaw. No i'm sorry, no help, just more medical bills. I’m sorry you had that reaction. Your doctor was likely doing what they thought was best for you. Consent should be obtained before an infusion but it would have stated that is a low risk of that kind of complication and you would have likely had the infusion anyway. Hindsight can be frustrating with procedures even when consent is appropriately obtained. True informed consent is not really possible.

    Thank you so much for this. I met with my OP endocrinologist yesterday at Columbia Presbyterian. I just turned 69. Went from osteopenia to osteoporosis within the last 2 years, due mainly to major weight loss from malabsorption due to IBD and low calcium intake according to my dr. My T score is -2.7 in hip. Had REMS done last September which was actually worse but fragility score was about 30%. I’ve lost more weight though. To my doctor’s credit she said no Prolia for me. However she wants me to start Fosamax. I have multiple drug allergies and am terrified of starting new drugs. Im taking D3, K2/MK7, boron, magnesium glycinate, some calcium citrate, high omega 3, vitamin C. I can’t digest most leafy greens but do eat a lot of salmon and sardines. I’ve refused treatment at this point but am terrified either way. My Vit D level is 55. She wants it at 30!!! Which I think is ridiculous. No Dr has ever recommended that.

I had the test for Osteoporosis and my doc told me I had it. She then suggested Prolia. I'm due for my 3rd one in a couple of days. She gave me the option of the some other drugs but thought the side effects of Prolia weren't as bad so I agred to have the injections. Now I'm reading all this stuff about it and getting so worried. I've never had a fracture even after falling off my bike and horse a few years ago. This was before taking Prolia of course. At the moment I don't seem to have any problems with my jaw/teeth although I did have a crown on one of me teeth after my first injection with Prolia. I had a crack in an old filling so I don't think it was anything to do with the Prolia. It worries me now that I could get fractures if I go off it in 10 years.
