Robert Knight - Love On A Mountain Top (Rerecorded)

- This record started my music career. I started DJing at Blackpool Mecca at the tender age of seventeen, and within a year, I had broken this record massive, till it first got bootlegged, and then reissued legally, and made number two on the national pop charts because of it. John Peel came up to Blackpool from Radio One, to interview me, to find out how an obscure 1960s soul record had suddenly appeared at number two on the pop charts, and all down to just one DJ originally. This was in 1973, and then twenty six years later, I got to film Robert performing it for our documentary "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". Born on the 24 April 1945, in Franklin, Tennessee, USA, Knight made his professional vocal debut with the Paramounts, a harmony quintet comprising school friends. Signed to Dot Records, they recorded "Free Me" in 1961, a US R&B hit, outselling the cover version by Johnny Preston. After this initial success their subsequent releases flopped and resulted in the group breaking up. Unfortunately, they also broke their contract with Dot and were prevented from recording for four-and-a-half years. Knight continued his studies in chemistry at the Tennessee State University where he formed vocal trio the Fairlanes. In 1967, Knight was spotted performing with the Fairlanes in Nashville, and was offered a contract as a solo artist by the Rising Sons label. His first recording, "Everlasting Love", written by label owners Buzz Cason and Mac Gayden, was an immediate success and earned him a US Top 20 hit. This enduring song was an even bigger success in Britain the following year where a cover version by Love Affair reached number 1, and in doing so, kept the singer from progressing further than a Top 40 position. Knight scored two further pop hits at home, "Blessed Are The Lonely" and "Isn't It Lonely Together". In 1973, he overshadowed his previous chart entry in the UK when "Love On A Mountain Top" reached number two. However, the reissued "Everlasting Love" went some way to making amends the following year, this time achieving Top 20 status. He continues to occasionally perform and record.
i lent this record to a girl i fancied as an excuse to talk to her its still "our song" 45 married years later
What a tune - Blackpool Mecca, went there many times, in fact celebrated my 21st there in 1973.

Blackburn Mecca 1975 Thursday nights, running for the 10:30 bus home to Accy just in time for the last bus at 11, home to Huncoat. Knowing Blackpool Mecca was just two more nights away, and if it was one of the "special" weekends an all dayer at the Ritz in Manchester.
Those were the days my friend!
You just cant beat classics like this. I just love this one.
People have asked me how I come to love Soul Music well this record is the reason. When I was just 14 years old my elder brother brought home two records Archie Bell and the Drells Here I go again and this wonderful record and from that defining moment I was hooked, many thanks to Ian Levine for posting this and countless other brilliant sounds.
Imagine if this was your dad and he did this song when he was young, and could still pull it off at his age...you'd think you dad was one cool mother
Indeed...
Roy Cross Well I’d be shot down for sure. I’m the ultimate poor dad dancer. But life’s for enjoyment.
MIME ? ?...... I doubt he could still pull his wire off !
There was a dude from my home town, a Pretty Boy" that returned to visit (FRANKLIN TENN) around 1960-62.
He had a local "Hit Record" that we had on our Teenage Club Jukebox!
His name was Robert Peoples!
His recording name was "ROBERT KNIGHT"
His Hit Record was "FREE ME" (a calypso)
I wonder if this is the same Guy!.
Ian- you were the best- thanks for these memories!

+James Cavender This was a big hit in the UK where it is his best known song. The Love Affair version of 'Everlasting Love' rather stole his thunder here.

Ah bliss, this is one of my all time favourite songs. I was brought up in Scunthorpe close to the northern soul mecca that is Cleethorpes, all I heard at this time was motown, tamla and northern soul. In the early 80s I moved to the gay metropolis that is London and had the great fortune of visiting Heaven, to hear the great Mr Ian Levine (should be Sir, for service to music) DJ-ing some of the best nights of my life. Keep up the good work Sir Ian, love it all, old and new. xxx
Tiffany's Shrewsbury👍👍👍
I saw him at the Top Rank in Preston with the Ormskirk Crowd and a few mates from Hutton Grammar (Andy Hanley was one of them). We were all shouting for him to sing 'Branded' and he had no idea that it had become the Northern Soul favourite that it had
