  • Songwriting Teacher Reacts: David Gilmour - The Piper's Dream
Watch Rafael Cano from Let’s Talk Song react to David Gilmour’s new single The Piper’s Call, learn how to combine innovative harmonies (this is a pivot chord masterclass!) with a conventional song structure and explore the beautifully soothing lydian songwriting techniques in the tradition of Pink Floyd and other progressive rock bands.

Happy you go even through the new song of Gilmour. Imagine to creat songs in his age. Hope to get more from you about Gilmour and Pink Floyd in the future. You help me really to understand the structure of music better. Thanks.

I like how you figure out songs, just kind of "fumbling around" till you find the right notes. Having said that, I think you may have a better theoretical understanding... I do think I'm a little rusty at it however this is how I used to do it. (I am a guitar player, and David Gilmour is my favourite player btw). Cheers, nice video Sir. 👍🎶

Parenting is impossible for me since my vasectomy. It was about the same price as my beloved jem jr, both are well worth the price.

On thing we used to discipline children was restricting food items to just nutritional requirements, no fun foods till the behavior is acceptable. When one child has a boiled egg and a simple sandwich and some veg, while everyone else is eating pizza the attitude quickly improves. Under most circumstances anyway, humans are unpredictable creatures especially the very young and very old.
Humans can be deceitful vile selfish and violent creatures care should be taken around them and be cautious when trying to domesticate or form friendships with them. Again food is a powerful motivation for them. If you live on earth be careful the surface is almost completely covered with them

    Very nice video, Rafa!
One question, to be established on F lydian, how can you determine that the home base or tonal center is that F instead of, let's say, its "normal" C from the ionian mode?

I struggled with the exact same question. My simplistic answer goes somewhere along the lines of: If it sounds floaty, starts with a IV chord and the #11 is highlighted, it’s got a lydian feel.

Could you react by Another brick in the wall part ii? How can a song with just almost one chord go that far?

It's way better than the Dark Side Of The Moon redux... But then again, almost anything is. Sounds like Gilmour, alright! The song has some surprising twists.

I never liked Gilmour outside Pink Floyd. Even in his debute album (1978) it sounds lazy. Rick Wright´s Wet Dream from the same year with just 3 songs is already much better.

While I agree with you, many of his solo songs seem unfinished somehow, like the bones are good but they needed a little something else, another dimension or changeup. That said, I will listen to Davis sing or play the phonebook and I’m still all in. Sometimes you don’t need to give music a critical analysis, just get in the spirit of it and appreciate that this nearly 80 year old dude is still doing this for us.
