    Great work man. I've got (my first) two 50s on the books for early 2019, and I think I'm getting more comfortable admitting to myself I might want a 100 buckle at some point. Obviously gotta see how those 50s go first, but videos like this really help me understand what I'm getting into. I figure if you look at something like this and aren't completely turned off, then maybe so. Gorgeous video, great work.

      @@RyanClaytonFilms That's awesome, and thanks! Kinda funny how so many of us sort of circle these same paths. I suppose it's not too surprising though; I haven't quite nailed it down, but I definitely think that there's some shared personality type that says "Yeah, spending 15hrs/week training for a 10/15/30 hour race is a good idea," ha. Your and Billy and Ethan's videos definitely get the gears turning. I remember a quote (I think it was Laz in some Barkley video) saying something like "It's only an achievement with the possibility of failure," and I seem to see that mindset in a lot of people's videos. I love seeing people get through those lows. Good luck to you as well!

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  6 років тому +2

      Thanks man! Yes, that Laz quote is one of my favorites!!! There is definitely something very intriguing about a race where you don't know if you actually can finish. That's one of the things that gets me out the door to train! Good luck!

      That's awesome Dale, thanks! What did you think of the race?

    • @DaleHawkins
      @DaleHawkins 6 років тому

      It was challenging. I knew the race tends to run long, but it was even longer than I expected (I got 109 miles; which means, the race is probably at least 105 to 106). I wasn't able to train as much as I would have liked this year (and I completely agree with the statement about how much time training takes). I would like (need?) to go back and get the sub-30 buckle some day. I think if the race went perfectly, I could pull that off, but I would have to put in more long mountain trail runs. In the end, I am happy to have finished as I wanted my Hardrock qualifier for the year.

    Ryan, I really love this and all of your videos. I like seeing the grind leading up to the races as well. I will be doing RRR as my first 100 this coming September. I will not have a pacer or crew, which I’m a little nervous about because so many of these 100 videos demonstrate the power of a good pacer or crew as so often they seem to rally runners who might be in a dark space. Any advice for a pacerless/crew less runner for RRR?

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  4 роки тому

      Thank you so much Robert!! Doing RRR as your first 100 will be hard no matter what, but without pacer/crew it will be especially hard. This is a HR qualifier, and while it's not the hardest of the bunch, it's still harder than your average 100 miler. All that said, there are ways to get around not having a pacer or crew. I would make sure you print out the charts and maps like I did and have them on you at all times. That will help with staying focused on the next section which is all you need to focus on. Make sure your drop bags are well organized with zip lock bags and labeled for what mile you're at so you don't even need to think, just pull out the bag and go. Olympian hall aid station is like a graveyard for runners. I didn't get any of it on film I don't think because I was so wiped out both times I hit it. Most likely both times will be in the night, it will be cold outside, but the aid station is warm and has amazing food, nice bathrooms and places to sit and relax. But don't fall for it, there will be a ton of other runners hanging out there who have dropped. Get in and out fast both times. Also, it's a good idea to try to team up with other runners in the night, or at least hang around others going at your same pace. That will help keep you motivated through the night. Also, just expect the aid station mile markers to be off a little bit, they're definitely not exact! Hope that helps, let me know if you have other questions!!

    • @robertbanjavcic7784

      @@RyanClaytonFilms With you having done an ultra now with no crew/pacer/good friend joining you do you have any extra advice for doing RRR100 without a crew or pacer? Last year was obviously cancelled but I’m signed up for this year (hopefully, there will be some semblance of normalcy by September).

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  3 роки тому

      @@robertbanjavcic7784 I would say make sure your drop bags are really well thought out. Like make an excel spreadsheet and memorize it!! Or have it in a ziplock bag to reference during the race. Also, try to spontaneously team up with a couple people through the night, that will be a big help! And good luck!!

      It would not have, but I charged it through the night with a portable usb battery. The Fenix models will continue to track your run while charging 👍

      Nice feature. Good vid and grats on the finish. Watching you train in midwest winters brought back memories of running with a beard full of ice and wondering if my manhood would succumb to frostbite lol. One of the many things I don’t miss about the Chicago area.

    Congrats! Been watching the build up and this was a great video to close it. Now the question...Grindstone vs Run Rabbit Run?

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Mike! Haha, great question! I think they both stand on their own as solid races, both very hard in their own rights and both have great signature qualities. Grindstone is tough beast coast terrain and the fact that most mortals have to go through two nights is just brutal. But RRR has the altitude factor and harder climbs, the upside is of course the beautiful Rocky Mountains. If I had to pick one to do again, it’d be RRR because of the location, but both have a special place in my heart! Thanks for asking!

    Incredible video and race effort. What I enjoyed most is your LACK of over dramatizing the race. Yeah it’s hard and it’s a big lead up to a race that distance but you saved the drama for off camera. Struggle and hardship are a given. Again well done.

    @Ryan thanks for the video. Are you from Indy? I found your video by exploring my options for a 100 next year for my 30th. This one falls around that time of the year, and this video gives me an idea of what to expect.

    How’s this course for a first 100? I will have several 50s done by race time.

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  3 роки тому +1

      This is definitely a hard course, it’s a hardrock qualifier for a reason. But that said it is totally possible, I did grindstone as my first hundred with a couple 50s prior. Good luck!!!

      Yeah it is! It's called a gaiter and goes over the sock and shoe to prevent debris from getting in. Here is a link to them: geni.us/GAITER

    What’s the logic behind eating like shit during the race?

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  4 роки тому

      There's nothing logical involved with running 100 miles in the mountains. But when you're in the middle of it, eating is actually really hard. So you eat whatever your body won't immediately reject. Sometimes it's good food, sometimes it's not, but you are in a calorie deficiency the whole time so everything you eat gets burned for fuel within the next couple hours. Hope that answers your question ✌️

    • @lilholographic722
      @lilholographic722 4 роки тому

      Ryan Clayton I see ya I’ve just seen a lot of odd stuff people chugging soda and what not I figured it would hinder you during the race.. as an athlete I would think clean fuel sources and water would be best.. gonna try a 50k as soon as this corona virus is over .. thanks for the info !

    • @RyanClaytonFilms
      @RyanClaytonFilms  4 роки тому

      yeah you'll see a lot of crazy stuff the more you get into this sport. Race nutrition is one of the most debated topics too. Good luck training during this crazy time, and that is so cool that you re doing a 50k soon!!!! Good luck!
