Game story is trash it's like a very bad C list sci fi movie but even cringier, you can't try to mix Kingdom hearts with Ridiculous Kaiju shlt and cringe emotional kiddies parts in a dark / grittier world, it all blends in into a disconnected parody of an inconsistent game, i cringed so much playing this it's painfull to watch how bad the dialogs and story was.
My take on this is Clive is alive and unfortunately Joshua is gone evidence being: 1: Clive Narrates the last part of the story 2: Curse doesn't mean instant death as seen with Cid 3: Side quest with Tomes noted that Clive wants to Pen a book when all this is finish, 4: Book title being Final Fantasy is like what Clive said during last stabby stabby scene. 5: Jill side quest noted that Clive wasnt going to break anymore promises and that the sunrises shows him coming back. 6: Metia star (red star) is a wishing star, it dims because a wish was granted instead of symbolizing Clives life Force 7: Song Moongazing Lyrics narrates Clive coming back to Jill (This was super cool) 8: forgot which exact person said it but they noted Phoneix can mend wounds but not revive, Clive healed Joshua so there isn't a big hole in his chest anymore. I think they made the ending like this as a reward for people completing the side quests, Kind of like a secret ending to players who did all the contents.
I think he only mended Joshua’s wound to remove what ultima did to his brother plus tarja said you BETTER heal him if he doesn’t come back in one piece
Sorry, but Clive is gone. If he was still alive, it would cheapen the entire scene of Jill and Torgal crying. That was Gav's book written under a different pen name.
@@naoko3749nah, all I saw was relief on Jill’s face when the sun rose and a black dot on the sea (supposedly Clive’s boat), u can’t just ignore all the symbolism and say Clive’s dead, genuinely more likely for him to have lived, plus the lyrics, that shit basically confirmed he’s alive.
this is my first FF game and I swear I became so attached to the characters especially Clive and Jill, I cried at the end. Please tell me there will be a DLC where maybe clive is alive.
Do remember that 15 had DLC which just wrote a completely alternate ending to the main story where everyone (RIP ardyn) lived happily ever after, so even if we go with a tragic ending, it doesn't mean we won't get a happy one in the end.

When the dog cried it was my limit, as a dog owner it's the same sound when I left the house without him. heartbroken
If there is DLC it's gotta take place at the same time or prequel, magic and eikons are gone, what would the gameplay even be like in an actual sequel? Iron swords and guns? lol. All magic using enemies and monsters would be wiped out too.
Seen a number of different peoples playthroughs and Xeno's was probably the most satisfying to watch as far as combat goes, man was pulling all sorts of crazy shit.
Clive only healed Joshua’s wounds. Joshua himself said Phoenix can heal physically but it’s up to the person to comeback spiritually. I think he was too far gone at that point. I believe Clive survived but lost the use of his non dominant hand, put down the sword, and wrote the book in Joshua’s name since it’s Clive narrating the beginning and ending.
After calming down, I realize this is honestly the best ending we could've gotten (thanks to that post credit scene). On the surface it's obviously a sad ending, but with that post credit scene you can literally decide for yourself what happened. I know people are going to say "copium" but that's how a lot of story endings were done, basically up to the reader/viewer to decide the full conclusion. There's a lot of things that can point to Clive's survival, just because his hand turned to stone doesn't mean he died right there. Remember even Jill got the curse for overdoing it but she's fine now, same with Cid, he would've survived if he didn't constantly pushed himself. The post credit scene is the reason why it's a potential happy ending. We know Clive is known to take over people's names in order to carry on their legacy, that being Cid for example. This time he took his brother's name and wrote a book sharing his and his brother's story for future generations. Why would he write a book of all things? Well that's where certain side quests can be important to the story, the last side quest with Harpocrates we see him telling Clive that after things are done, he should drop his sword and pick up a pen which Clive seemed to like the idea. It truly is up to the player how they want to view the ending, and I love it, especially thanks to the certain side quests and story points we can actually picture the happy ending and fits perfectly with the story.
@@sonata9631 the bond between the 4 main characters was a massive strength at least, the campfire scene at the end was earned, characters who were too good for the game they were in (same with Ardyn)
@@wolfspledge1762 Best part about the game IS the campfire scene and the timeskip. If XV would've handled the timeskip and character development the same like XVI did it would've been way better. Especially the bond between Luna and Noctis. But everything just felt rushed. But typical Nomura since he wants to add 5000 things that take too much time.
You can easily tell apart who did the last few side quests and who didn't. They sow so much narative about Clive looking forward to his future after all things are done and the symbol of Clive returns to Jill when sunrises through Tome and Jill's quest. Jill keep goes on and on about Clive better saving himself and she'll give up her power for him to do so, not to mention all the promises they made. The obvious "oh looks he sacrifies himself" sure takes a turn, but there're so much reason to believe that Clive died a hero would make zero sense if we're taking into regards the side quests.
Dude...the emotions I felt after watching edgerunners were the same when I ended this game. Can't be a coincidence since the studio who made Edgerunners was also a Japanese anime studio. These fucking people know exactly where human heart strings are at and how to make a great character.
You forgot about Leviathan the Lost. He’s an Eikon alive somewhere in Valisthea. Many people are asking for a DLC for Leviathan to happen and also a conclusion to the possibility of Clive and Joshua being alive. If us fans consistently ask SE to make that DLC happen, they will make it. Yoshi-P even said he would consider making it if there’s enough support for it.
No leviathan doesn't exist anymore. Leviathan was also just another eikon like the other eikons. He wasn't anything special. He just never returened l like the other eikons.
Ultima must have absorbed leviathan before the game, maybe centuries before. Maybe a dlc will explore how his dominant got taken by ultima. It’s possible leviathan dominant rebelled against ultima alone and ultima destroyed him.
I mean, Clive could've just healed Joshua's wounds so his last memories with him was not seeing his baby brother all bloodied and dead. He just healed him before he ended everything. Either way, game is fantastic story-wise, imo. Great seeing your reaction Xeno :)
His happy ending is he fulfilled his duty and his promise to Cid, he freed the world and it's future. He had to make the choice between saving himself and saving the world.
one thing the comments make u realize - do all side quest my dudes, don't neglect them, otherwise you will never understand all the hints at the end!! man this was such well told story - beautiful but bittersweet at the same time
I loved the ending. It was so emotional. The ambiguity works for me, sometimes I don't want things handed to me on a silver platter. It made me think about Clive's journey and how I interpreted it. Some people say if Clive dies then the entire game was pointless, but I think the opposite. He was about CHOICE, living and dying on your own terms. Clive ultimately made the choice to die on his terms so everybody else could have a chance to live on theirs, and I think that speaks for his constitution. Incredible game through and through. This is Clive's story, and we are the ones watching it from beginning to end.
@@soraxis9285 I....explained it in my comment already? I came away really happy with my experience from start to finish. The same can be said about FF10's ending, not everything needs to end in a happy "off in the sunset" way to still be enjoyable. Storytelling isn't rigid.
Cringe fans and their paternalism.. it's nothing new. These people unironically think that their copium and mental gymanstics is somehow a better ending than clive making a conscious decision on his own terms on what to do, in order to foster a better world for you know... all of humanity moving forward. instead we get "nah he lived caused reasons" ie.. i'm too cringe to accept he died. "fans" have no respect for his autonomy and the concept of self determination, which is ironic cause that's a core part of the entire narrative.
I didnt like how it seemed like clive made a split second decision to ending it all after slaying ultima. After promising everyone, especially jill, that hes coming back.
@@soraxis9285 because his conscious decision, albeit a tough one, ultimately lead to a world where the material condition of all of humanity improved. gauging whether something is "good" bad "sad" "happy" solely on the basis of the MC is incredibly reductive.
@@raze_6474 I mean it's prety obvious why he made those "promises." it's because had he not, they would've prevented him from going in the first place. you kind of missed the whole point about autonomy and self determination.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Medicine Girl shows up on the beach right after it cuts away from Clive lol. Remember she tried to help Joshua and Jill before? Then she actually did help Dion and he seemed almost more powerful afterwards. Maybe she is connected to Leviathan somehow?
The point of a mature story isn't to just make it as edgy and kill as many character as possible (like what some retards like Cuckman did), but to give the viewers better immersion and enjoyment when they can't predict what will happen to each character's fate, who will prevail and who will perish. FF16 has done this masterfully while still providing super hype, el classico anime moments. I'm sure Clive's story will be widely remembered for a long time to come.
I think that character deaths were inevitable if they were gonna be realistic about men going to fight a God. Dion knew he was gonna die, and so did the others.
@@bryson8918If you’ve played 14 at all, there’s a trend of characters who seemingly died but came back. It is not out of the realm of possibility. It happens in writing in general (especially when killed off screen) for characters to come back. Kenny from twd games comes to mind for example
Alot of people say leviathan could be a reason clive lives as leviathan is a major primal and the only one not shown and possibly helps clive to live or joshua as they were above the ocean. If anything i hope clive lives cause im tired of final fantasy characters sharing the joe star bloodline and dying lol
I have this crazy theory that Metia (the red star) is actually Leviathan hiding in space (I mean, if he figured out his purpose was to get absorbed by Ifrit, why not leave?), and Clive destroying Origin and shooting the big blue lazer up is like a signal telling him to come back and that's why the red glow turns off.
I cried so hard during the whole past portion of the game even my wife did who knows nothing of final fantasy. This game was the best one of this series.
I feel like there's *enough* ambiguity to this ending that it could really go either way (dead vs alive) but I much prefer the interpretation that Clive lives simply because I don't like the thought of Jill being alone, specifically after that one side-quest with Clive in the field of snow daisies. Aside from that, I, too, am a sucker for happy endings lol
I honestly think the ending was perfect, though I did figure it'd be contentious. This is all my personal interpretations: Clive surrenders himself because he knew with him alive that the world would still be chained to it's past of magic/dominants/eikons, and by dying all of it will be relegated to the past. It's very bitter since throughout the entire story everyone tells him that he needs to save himself rather than others, but in the end he's not able to keep that promise or those of him returning. Fully embracing his role as the world's shield, for better or for worse. This also calls back to Cid's goal of creating a world where bearers could die on their own terms, a world Clive initiates by doing so himself. The red moon is Metia, which from the very beginning Jill has prayed to multiple times for Clive's safe return. It going out was a symbol that those prayers wouldn't be answered. More than anything, this confirms at least to me that Clive is definitely dead and I don't see them betraying the theme of the story by him surviving. If you do Dion's side quest it expands a lot on his (very expected) death. Him telling Harpocrates that he'll only deserve the flower when he returns, which I interpreted as him meaning a flower placed on his grave, shows he was fully expecting to die. His death imo didn't need to be flashy or a huge focus, silent and lonely in repentance. When I initially finished I assumed the book was written by Joshua during his travels as he went out to learn more about Ultima or sometime before them going to Origin, but that's the only thing I'm not fully sure on and I don't think interpreting it as him surviving is wrong. Having it end with no closure was as true to the narrative theming as could be, wouldn't make sense to have a happy ending with how cruel their lives were. Reminds me of Tokyo Ghoul's manga ending where the author said it'd be a tragedy, and then at the end everyone becomes friends and they live happily ever after. Also the bit at the every end before the credits is the saying "the night is darkest before the dawn" in literal form.
The quote that most sticks with me during the end game side quests is: "Truth" is dependent on mass belief, this also means that the "Truth" is not immutable and may be changed. Vivian is the one who states this regarding Valisthaen history and I think it was a hidden message from the developers that if the community see it fit that Clive lives then so be it. In essence it means that Clive is not uncategorically dead and that's enough for me.
Man i got so pissed at the end. I wanted Clive and Jill to have a happy ending at the very least. He never should have promised her he was coming back. I too am a sucker for happy endings.
Clive is definitely alive, the game devs gave all the clues throughout the story dialogues and especially in the side quests. Everyone's picking up some of the points here and there but to lay out the 7 points that basically prove Clive survived: 1. The final crying scene directly references the side quest dialogue. When is Jill crying the sun rises and she stops crying. This is after Jill and Clive have told each other how much they mean to one another in one of the side quests. During the side quest she mentioned how she would cry looking up at the stars at night during dark times. She tells him that no matter how sad and dark the night is, the sun will always return at dawn. And that she knows that Clive will always return to her. 2. Biology: Wolves howl in nature to communicate with their pack mates to tell them where they are and to guide them back. When Cid is dying in front of the group, Torguil whimpers to show remorse and sadness as but actually doesn’t howl even after Cid dies. So the fact that Torgal is howling instead of whimpering is indicative of Clive being alive. 3. The last thing Clive tells Jill is no more broken promises. He had promised her he would return to her no matter what. And we all know Clive is a man who honors his word. 4. Clive tells Harpocrates that after his quest/journey is done he will put down the sword and take up the pen 5. In the final fight with ultima at the end. Ultima tells Clive that 'this resistance is a fantasy he clings to'. Clive tells him that the only one living in a fantasy is ultima and that “this would be his final fantasy” (before Clive finally kills him). In the ending post credits scene, the book is titled “Final Fantasy”. The only one to mention that term was Clive in final battle and he was alone there. So no way Joshua would just happen by coincidence to title it the same thing considering it was based off a isolated conversation between ultima and Clive 6. When Cid died, Clive takes up his mantle and go by his name to honor the life he gave and what he stood for. So in the secret ending cutscene with the book author saying Joshua Rosfield, this would make perfect sense for Clive to do in order to honor his brothers memory. 7. If you 100% the game, the secret ending also has one dialogue line during the final fantasy book scene of audio of Clive giving the final narration saying “and that was the end of the journey”. Which is confirmation by itself that Clive lived to chronicle the story.
Massive cope, Clive is dead. 1. That's just her hopes and wishes, she concludes WITH THE SUNRISE that Clive won't come back, but that's okay and the sun will still rise. 2. That's a comically large reach based in reality, not even the defined realm of this fiction 3. Nah, he lies again, and that's the last time he lies. He's dead and can't keep that promise 4. Harpocrotes takes up that pen after Clive dies to tell the story Clive constantly retold him throughout the game 5. Once again an insane reach, the mental gymnastics are admirable. 6. This would make sense for whoever the NEXT "Cid" would be, possibly Gav, maybe Mid, possibly even Jill. Clive is definitely dead here, whereas when Cid died, it made sense for his SURVIVOR Clive to take up the mantle and namesake. 7. There's not a "secret" ending, it ends the same every time. Clive on a beach being consumed by the curse saying "and thus ends our journey" just like he says "and thus does our journey begin" in the beginning. Once again, massive cope, maybe a DLC will definitely say otherwise. But it's left open for anyone to believe what they will. Just saying, all of your reasons are flawed through and through.
@@northwestclasspnw7974the most important thing is also that tomes literally says that Joshua should become a chronicler after the battles, because he’s a talented writer. Also crystal curse is a death sentence and Clive literally used all the worlds aether. He’s fried and died quasi instantly after using the spell on that beach.
@@Storm1Trooper5. the red dot disappeared meaning Jill’s prayer to Metia was fulfilled, Clive lives, the sunrise confirms it, you just have to understand the symbolism of the sunrise Sunrise (birth, growth, new beginnings of all kinds, resurrection, even the creation and nearly everything that has a cherished or hoped-for origin.) literally what Clive just did, reset the world.
"media literate" is a new empty buzzword. It doesn't mean anything. It's the "to be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty" for people who are Twitter-brainrotted.
@@yuzuki2385 your copium gauge must be maxed out to reach this level of mental gymmanstics. so sad how you feel the need to undermine clive's conscious decision purely for copium.
@@bryson8918 Sounds to me like you're the one thats on copium since you seem so dead set on him being dead and dismissing everyone else that says otherwise but cope harder king
I believe that the ending was inspired by what Vivian Ninetales told Clive about how the truth is what many believe to be true. To those who believe Clive sacrificed himself, it is true. To those who believe Clive survived to tell the tale by taking up Joshua's name, it is true. Until the DLC proves otherwise, these are both true in their own right.
All my friends either don’t have a ps5 or are not fans of final fantasy so the ending depression is real by not being able to talk about the ending. Just wanted to see Clive and Jill together at the end honestly as I did not care nearly as much about the other characters. The ambiguity is the worst part lol
The only snag to your ending is the moment Clive used his power all magic ceased to exist. Clive destroyed the structure just after walking away from Joshua (so no time for Joshua to have gotten up / escaped) the only reason Clove washed up on the beach (instead of being destroyed in the explosion) is because he was the vessel. Having said that, in the scene with Jill / sunrise - you can see a boat coming in from the distance. So I would presume Clive and Joshua managed to survive somehow - though I feel like the self sacrificing message is far more powerful instead of the typical happy ending. To lose Joshua after all of that seems cruel but that’s practically the premise of the game. (But so is the ability to prevail) FF games rarely have a clear-cut ending, so this one was no surprise. Out of it all, Torgal howling hit me the hardest.. I’m a huge dog / animal lover, and there aren’t too many things stronger than the bond between a dog and their owner. Great videos my man - I really enjoy your content and your sincerity. (It feels like you are being you - not a personality for the sake of some views). Respect 🫡
i like happy endings.. i got frustrated with this ending.. its so sad!! my ending would be Clive getting married with Jill in that white daisy garden overlooking view.. Rosaria restored under the rule of Joshua… Dion is ruling too. Clive with Jill continues the legacy of Cid… will there be a better ending when finishing new game plus?
I dont think its as open ended as people think. When clive heals joshua it was just to clean his wounds. Similarly how you would close someones eyes who is dead so they dont look crazy while they are dead. Clive lives because in the ending side quests he mentions he will take up the pen when he puts down the sword. Hinting that he wrote the book. 1. He most likely wrote it in Joshuas name to honor him and immortalize him also he was the main reason his journey even began. 2. The only other possible outcome.. albeit would be less gratifying if it were this outcome.. was that the whole thing was just a story and never happened and someone named joshua rosfield wrote themselves into their own story. Probably unlikely the 2nd option i think it would take away a lot from the ending and emotion from the ending and the story as a whole for that to be the ending. So I am like 99% sure the ending is option 1. Jill even mentions in a side quest that when the sunrises she always knows Clive will come back to her thats why she smiles at the end. There is too many hints that flesh out the ending for Clive to be dead and the story to actually have happened.
I believe if someone is alive it's clive, we've been told phoenix's flames don't bring the dead so that's joshua out of the equation then there was a quest with loresman where clives tells him after this is over he'll drop the sword and take the quill and write about his journey, then he wrote the book under joshua's name to honor him as he did once before for cid that's my copium anyway so...
Fck that. You would ruin a game and tragedy for cheap thrills? We should get dlc adding to the world, not rewriting a beautiful ending to a tragic heroic character. Not every game needs to have comically dumb b crowd Hollywood good ending.
what pains me the most is when I see Torgal looking up the window... I can atleast move on when people is in pain... but it was TORGAL.. "waiting and hoping" for Clive to come back again... a dog's pain, I cannot take!
Imo regarding the ending, clive survived but he lost his left hand and joshua is dead. joshua did say something about his power in the demo, i recall he can heal but he couldn’t res if i’m not mistaken and clive would be the one to write the book since if joshua was the one who wrote it. it wouldn’t make sense if he wrote it until the final battle, the only one who knows the details itself was clive, this is assuming joshua was dead. But hey any ending just fine because its an open ending to interpret
I like to think that Clive casted Ultima's spell and made the world the way he and all of his people had dreamed, also reviving Joshua and the post credit scene is the future where Joshua's book has become a fairy tale. I think when he tried to revive Joshua he realized the power was killing him so instead of leaving the giant origin crystal in the sky with all the realms aether and the blight continue to spread he altered the parameters of the spell and that's why he was all like here are our terms. But that's just a theory, a Clive theory😎
Do all the sidequests. That explicitly spells it out to you that clive survived....just with one less arm. Him healing joshua even though he was already dead was him keeping his promise to tarja that joshua come back with no wounds, even if dead. The pheonix can't bring back the dead...only heal surface wounds. Joshua was dead for a long while....clive just wanted to keep his promise an heal the hole in joshuas chest. The last few side quests explicitly spell out what clive is gonna do with jill once this is over. They literally wanna leave to a new continent and start a life together. Clive most definently wrote the book in the ending under joshuas name as only he knows the full story of the whole game, no one else. Thats why clive narrates the ending monologe of the game. With hypocrates quill that is given to you in one of the last sidequests explicitly. They did do the ending in a way that it can be interpreted both ways though depending on if you did the sidequests or not.
To read all the comments that say "Clive ledgit survive all of this and that the petrification ends on his hand, because... [insert bla bla bla]". We in germany would say: "Ich mach mir die Welt, wie sie mir gefällt."
My theory is they both were reborn as those two boys in the end as both Clive and Joshua are descendants of the Phoenix, regardless of whom wields the power to turn into it. Also because the actual power of the Phoenix - accourding to legend - is to be reborn (not to be revived)
Nice video. I think Clive is alive, he narrates the game including at the end just before the credits roll - he can't narrate the story in past tense if he is dead. (Unless they do some weird time travel thing in a future DLC a la Endwalker). Joshua's fate is a lot more ambiguous. It is more likely he is dead for real but given Clive had Phoenix and Ultima's powers at that point and given Joshua's spirit could still have been in tact through the Phoenix abilities that Clive had during the final boss fight, there is a chance he may have made it also. Few issues with the logic of the story though: 1. Why didn't Joshua just release Ultima out of his body if he knew what was about to happen, or why wasn't this discussed sooner? From the moment he contained Ultima it was a matter of when something tragic would happen rather than if. The group could have tried to do something about it beforehand rather than let it get to the point where Ultima was forcibly removed from Joshua and causing a mortal wound. 2. Ultima raised the Origin into the middle of the air. Why didn't Clive use Ultima's abilities to lower Origin back to Valisthea's surface before destroying the Mothercrystal? Without magic abilities after the odds of either brother surviving were slim, having fallen all the way to Valisthea's surface and with all the rocks/crystals falling down also. Not once did Dion/Joshua/Clive think when planning this how were they getting back. 3. Why didn't Clive make sure that Joshua was alive after 'resurrecting' him. A few places, even the Wikipedia plot description say that Joshua was resurrected but we never saw Joshua wake up. Even if Joshua did wake up he wouldn't have his abilities and would be stuck on a soon-to-be destroyed Origin in the middle of the sky. I think Joshua is likely dead, and his character arc was complete at that stage also (besides maybe a potential romance with Jote). But I wouldn't say that for certain.
I thought that Joshua was able to be revived by Clive via Raise after obtaining Ultima's powers and then wrote that book. Ultima was going to use that spell on the planet.
At this point, if and when FF17 comes out and it's going to have the most generic happy ever after ending, I'd full on give it a 10/10. I'm so done with sad endings in a FF game.
Not having finished the game yet. Final Fantasy doesn't really do the "bring everyone back from the dead endings" as others have said based on just this video alone. I think both Joshua and Clive are dead as they both sacrifice for the better (and if the mothercrystals are the source of magic) thats why the mother says its all fairy tales. Maybe the Eikons refused to pick any Dominants after Clive and Joshus death
I don't think thats where Clive died, throughout the game he never showed any signs of the curse affecting him from using magic, what caused him to suffer now is using Ultima's power which are on another level. Theres every chance he keeps living as the curse only spreads if magic is continued to be used.
i think clive just loose the hand because all magic disapear so he didn't fully transform into stone, joshua is dead i think and clive used is name for the book
My canon for the end of FF16 is: Clive sacrificed himself to save Joshua who eventually came back to life since you saw Clive heal his body and considering the book at the end is written by Joshua himself. I like to think big brother saved his baby brother and gave him another chance at life at the expense of his own.
Lots of speculation over the ending. I can only take it at face value. Clive dies creating a better world for everyone. Jill can sense it, she knows he's dead so she starts crying. When the sun comes up, it cheers her up a bit , it makes her realize that Clive sacrificed himself but achieved his goal of making a better world for them and she shouldn't be all doom and gloom about it. You can try to speculate a happy ending but I think it's actually a pretty cruel ending. The ending with the book is anyone's guess. Could be Joshua had been writing a book before he died. But either way, it's probably hundreds of years later and humanity lives a normal live and magic is just a thing of fairy tales.
I am in the opposite camp. If you have done the sidequests (Joshua's and Jill's) there are some precise lines about seeing hope when the "dawn rises" after "night has fallen" The star, Metia going out can be interpreted as the star granting Jill her wish for Clive to return safely. Notice how Jill cries when it is night but smiles when the dawn rises. I think they devs left it ambiguous, so if you didn't do those sidequests, you would interpret it as sadness and hope for a new world Clive, Joshua, and Dion sacrificed themselves to create, but if you did you can see it as a hopeful future that Clive lives and settles down with Jill.
@@coolyeh1017 I Hope you're right. But can any of that be proven? Or unless the developer of the game confirms it, I have to think of that as just theories.
@@Lorenzferus I’ll give u three reasons that basically confirm he survived: 1. The lyrics of the song (Moongazing) narrate Clive’s return from Jill’s POV. 2. Clive asking Tomes (I think) for a pen to write a book about the story once Ultima is defeated. 3. Clive promising Jill to never break a promise ever again, and he promised her to return. There’s also how Clive narrates the ending of the story as if he was telling the story to someone else, but this can be seen as just artistic, however he never takes the role of the narrator during the game so it seems very much deliberate. Plus plus, the name of the book being Final Fantasy but only Clive ever mentioned that name (during Ultima fight) so unless Jote or Gav knew about it somehow, they couldn’t have come up with the exact same name. I know I said 3 but somehow more hints came to mind as I was writing lol.
@@adonicetrig8908 Those are some legit points. But I would rather just think of it as a tragic ending. If they wanted a happy ending then they should of just shown Clive walking back to the base. They knew the whole book part was going to open the door to all kinds of the theories. If that's the case and Clive lived and all that, they should release some DLC or something to clarify. If Clive lived then he must of come back and settled with Jill. Why is it so hard to show that rather than leave everyone guessing?
@@Lorenzferus leaves the doors open uno, because ff16 is so completely different from all other mainline ff games, Yoshi P said that DLC was an afterthought and that the focus for ff16 was to deliver a complete experience and to see how interested people would be in the formula…fair to say, most people love it. Think of it this way, game performs poorly means that the ending is just the ending and Clive’s end of story, we’re left to speculate what happens to him, on the other hand, game performs greatly means that we’re likely getting DLC, which in turn means that Clive is probably alive, by leaving it ambiguous, the doors for whatever will happen next are also left open. When u look at it from their perspective, and from what ff is and what 16 does to the franchise, this was the best decision to make.
Love your ending😂! My ending is that Joshua lives because Clive used the power of the phoenix (enhanced by Ultimas powers) on him. Clive lives because of either the phoenix down that he had on him since discovering that Joshua was alive from phoenix gate OR Jill's prayer to Metia the star which goes out at the end. I think the best ending for Dion would be his death in duty- I just don't see him living life normally after all the things that he did. If he was to live, I would like the reappearance of the girl with the medicines. But yeah no body, no death 😂.
I like to think Clive lived because Clive said he wanted to write a story after it’s all said and done and Clive have also shown to use other peoples name so I would like to think he used it to keep Joshua legacy alive we don’t know if he turned to stone we just know his hand turned the hand he used to cast that explosion mind u and we only realize seen it stop at the wrist and I would also like to think her wish was granted and that’s why the red star burned out I think it mention somewhere that if many people share the same hope or faith in one single wish it makes it come true or something like that and as we seen there were soooooo many people Clive helped and how many lives he impacted I like to believe that they all shared in the singular wish for Clive to come back to them and I would also like to believe the reason Jill looked up and looked hopeful was because she saw Clive coming from the horizon also I read somewhere that the song that played in the background of the whole ending was a story of Clive coming back to Jill (I haven’t sat and really listened to the word myself) and lastly I would like to believe those two kids were Clive and jills descendants and worse case scenario Clive only lost his hand hope he traveled the world with Jill like they wished
wanting to write a story is a pretty low bar for thinking he lived lol.. like you saw the cutscene.. clearly he thought this choice trumped others.. there's no reason to undermine his conscious decision because people can't cope with the idea that he arrived to a conclusion different than what people projected onto him.
@@bryson8918 well also the devs said that the ending isn’t as cut and dry as it may seem “the ending is very hopeful and there maybe some quest that will help impact your conclusion to the story” it may not be as it seems at first glance also we didn’t see him fully turn to stone only his hand did it literally stopped at his wrist and seeing how fast it turned his hand to stone I’m pretty sure it would of been creeping up his arm and on his face as well it took seconds for his hand to be covered in stone and like we seen that doesn’t kill them it only kills them when they are fully consumed by it cid had his hand and arm turned to stone and he was fine Jill had some of it to even if we don’t see it they said she had some signs of it part of your body turning to stone isn’t the end we seen some one in the infirmary in fact who’s whole body was covered in stone except for his face and he was still very much alive and talking that was the side quests where u basically get some poison to “put him to sleep” to end his suffering so again we seen extreme cases and they are still fine up until being 100% consumed we didn’t see Clive turn to stone fully just his hand so the likelihood of him being alive and just passing out instead of dying is still there also it’s also been shown that using ur Eikon over and over is exhausting to the user example when Clive fought Odin he turned into Ifret like 2-3 times and by the time he needed to do it a 3rd/4th he could not his body was exhausted from the priming so much also there are other things that could imply he lived like example the song they played seems to also tell a story one of the lyrics I think was “I was searching for something moon gazing frightened of the storm when you appeared to me I was so glad it was you I have no doubt the flame will ever go out just like nothing ever happened” that’s only the lyrics that’s out as of right now it it sounds very much like it’s telling a story of two people finding each other (possibly Clive and Jill) it’s also called moon gazing so that’s another implication that this song is very specific to Clive and Jill because their whole thing was moon gazing like the devs said the ending is not as cut and dry as it seems there is probably a lot of clues and stuff sprinkled throughout the game that will help u come to multiple conclusions as to what happened in the end that is what the devs said and also this is a final fantasy game it’s usually never as simple as it seems these games have layers and layers ontop of layers each side quests in this game specifically have some weight to add to the story to the world and the characters knowing what I know I do want to believe Clive mentioning he wanting to write a story after his mission is done and then conveniently a book ABOUT THE GAME was magically written and was emphasized and on top of that was written by Joshua might mean Clive might of gotten to write that story he wanted we know for a fact it couldn’t he Joshua himself that wrote it because he did 100% die even tho Clive healed his chest at the end he is still dead the power of the Phoenix only heals flesh and bone (they said this like 3 times in the game) it can not mend a sprite that already left it’s body so he is already removed from the equation sadly Clive is the only one that literally made it out of origins and onto solid ground and he’s the only one that can truly tell the ending of this story
@@bryson8918 oh your one of those I see there’s no talking to u lol like I said devs said there’s more to the end than what u see at first and take into account it’s a final fantasy game with a story that haves layers on layers and also the story has away of bringing things that were shown back around into the story like for example then the lord commander does their salute in the beginning it was very in your face they wanted u to see it and remember it but then much later on u meet a random villager who also does that exact same salute (a salute u don’t see ever again mind you because it was the rosaria salute and they are basically extinct at that point in the game) but again they brought it back around and it’s up to u as the player to remember it or pay attention I caught it instantly because I paid attention to the story there is also own other thing that was mentions early on but then was brought back up again but if u don’t pay attention u miss it I don’t remember what it was tho but my point is this game and games like it have a tendency of dropping some lore or story or what ever for u to pick up and it haves a tendency on bringing that piece of information back around it’s not cope it’s just something a game like this does why are u so on my nuts about my opinion anyway? That’s kinda weird dude lol
Theory: Joshua died, Clive took his name like he did on Cid's. There's a sidequest when he said when his quest with Ultima is over, he's gonna write a book too. And that "Final Fantasy" is derived from what he said literally to Ultima.
Phoenix’s power couldn’t revive a dead person, it can only heal someone. So Clive passed away in my opinion, and since all crystals are now gone, and Clive used his last shot to burn everything into ashes, so magic, crystals stuffs no longer exist and became a fairy tale written in a book for the human in the future. That’s my understanding, it’s sad, and Clive became one of my favourite character in gaming😭😭
@@Fluffymagicalbunny Ultima can't revive souls, he had power over the physical world which Clive used to restore the world to the way it was before the aether got sucked up by the crystals. However, given the shit Clive has survived in this game I think he lives but just stops using that power which even he can't handle without consequences.
I thought the second time viewing would be easier but damn it, Gav’s words always get me. I really want a dlc just so that there’s an excuse for an ending change. Something like finding out what happened to Leviathan (and maybe even confirming my personal theory that Torgal is Leviathan’s Dominant because he looks pretty darn Leviathany when using his Eikon-like powers) thus giving the group a power boost for the final fight.
@@Bahamut998 i have read the lore. I am just choosing to believe that Torgal could possibly be Leviathan because 1. The game already has examples of legends or records of the past only being a fraction of the truth and 2. Good boy becomes gooder boy
@@pikadragon6826 leviathan is to me clearly much more. He’s a lost eikon meaning he probably was killed centuries ago by ultima. I’m guessing his dominant was the first to rebel against ultima and got killed, it would be an amazing dlc to explore. For example Joshua as historian investigating Leviathan.
I really dislike that ending... the game was absolutely perfect 11/10 until that ending. I love the characters in this game so much, especially Jill and Torgal and seeing them sad at the end really left me emotionally devastated. Seriously, I´ve been depressed all week long because of this... why not give me a fucking happy ending after dedicating 65 hours of my heart and soul to this story and characters? It´s honestly the only part of this game that I really didn´t like. This is definetely one of my favourite games ever, but unfortunately one that I probably won´t be playing again for a long time... I was sure I´d play it again on NG+ and FF difficulty but after this ending, IF I do it will be in the future after I can come to terms with what happened, because right now I´m emotionaly destroyed.
He’s not 100% dead cause if you do the final jill side quest it says that the rising sun symbolizes Clive returning to jill, hence the ending of a rising sun. Also Cid lived for years with a petrified arm so the hand does really count as a death blow But yeah I think he’s probably dead
He is not dead xD Petrification stops at his hand, cause he tried to use magic after using up everything that made him Mythos/Logos and Ultimas power. Also the post-credit cutscene is the biggest evidence, we begin and end the game with Clives narration, and theres even a book about this. The only one who knows what fully happend is Clive. Joshua was passed out/dead for the finale of the fight and no one else was there. Clive probably wrote the book in Joshuas name so his brother would not be forgotten.
Cid lived with his arm in that state for a while because it was a slow progression due to using magick. Clive used SO MUCH magick that his fingertips started petrified and then in real time it spread to his entire hand. He even drops his arm to the sand as though its too difficult to hold it up. His line about not even his body being enough to house ultima's power is kinda the nail in the coffin/clue that his body will fail if he uses that magick. He also cast a spell so powerful that he erased magic, eikons, the blight, and crystals from the world ( remember ultima was going to cast a similar spell with all that power to re-write reality for himself) and set his "terms" as he cast it. There was no stopping the curse from taking him. Joshua doesn't revive because "not even the power of the pheonix can bring back the dead", Clive just repairs the body in an act of desperation. Metia blinking out also kinda signifies his death because Jill always would wish on it to keep him safe and this time the star didnt remain burning bright. I think her reaction to the sunrise was more and acceptance, he didnt return to her, but he saved the world and left them a world they could thrive in. She isn't smiling at the end, she looks like she's trying to put on a brave face and be strong in light of what just happened (The facial expressions are real good in the cutscenes, she looks like she's fighting a frown).
@@GiorgosAigio96 Yeah, the petrification clearly stops at his wrist. It's not ambiguous. You don't see it progress then go offscreen. You see the petrification travel to his wrist, then clearly stop, then the angle changes.
@@jonathanalbee8127 He said that Ultima's power is too great for this vessel (him), but that so long as he has it, he can use it to set things right, even *if* it kills him. Nothing about it means he died due to it. Just that he'd be willing to die if he needed to. In the end, his act is probably what saved him because it got rid of all magic, including Ultima's.

@@naoko3749nah you coping
My take on this is Clive is alive and unfortunately Joshua is gone evidence being:
1: Clive Narrates the last part of the story
2: Curse doesn't mean instant death as seen with Cid
3: Side quest with Tomes noted that Clive wants to Pen a book when all this is finish,
4: Book title being Final Fantasy is like what Clive said during last stabby stabby scene.
5: Jill side quest noted that Clive wasnt going to break anymore promises and that the sunrises shows him coming back.
6: Metia star (red star) is a wishing star, it dims because a wish was granted instead of symbolizing Clives life Force
7: Song Moongazing Lyrics narrates Clive coming back to Jill (This was super cool)
8: forgot which exact person said it but they noted Phoneix can mend wounds but not revive, Clive healed Joshua so there isn't a big hole in his chest anymore.
I rather have happy ending.
@naoko3749 you, I and everyone else knows Gav can't write
this is my first FF game and I swear I became so attached to the characters especially Clive and Jill, I cried at the end. Please tell me there will be a DLC where maybe clive is alive.
im with you dude. when jill was looking at the stars at the end and the red star stopped glowing i couldnt hold it anymore xD
iirc Yoshi-P said they intended for an ambiguous ending so the story could be expanded upon at a later time if they wanted to... so praying for DLC!
Remember what Jill said:
“That no matter how terrible the night… dawn would always come.”
The Joshua monologue about how he was happy to have Clive as his shield and big brother absolutely ruined me.
Xenos interpretation of the end is so soft dad. I love it.
Seen a number of different peoples playthroughs and Xeno's was probably the most satisfying to watch as far as combat goes, man was pulling all sorts of crazy shit.
Xenon’s heart is as soft and pure as Alisaie’s and I’m on board with his ending interpretation!
Clive only healed Joshua’s wounds. Joshua himself said Phoenix can heal physically but it’s up to the person to comeback spiritually. I think he was too far gone at that point. I believe Clive survived but lost the use of his non dominant hand, put down the sword, and wrote the book in Joshua’s name since it’s Clive narrating the beginning and ending.
or Joshua and Clive BOTH died and Jote is using Joshuas name to publish a memoir of their lives.
Torgal really gets me. I am generally not a very emotional person, but damn dogs get me. If a dog dies, or if a dog loses its owner, damn my heart.
Same, i was like yea ok that sucks... but as soon as Torgal was howling oof
He does still have Jill at least
The good thing is Jill as shiva is true owner of Torgal.
I like this take. You must be a glass-half-full kind of person. Good for you!

Dion knew he was gonna die, and so did the others.
if you have played the Tomes and Jill sidequests you get that the ending heavily implies that Clive lived

Also remember. If enough people believe it, it will become truth. I believe Clive lived.
May not be the full ending, got a feeling we’re missing other key parts
Nop they did that on purpose. You make your own final story.
its cool to see that clives vision came true and people took fate into their own hands, without domini, espers, magic and such
Alot of people say leviathan could be a reason clive lives as leviathan is a major primal and the only one not shown and possibly helps clive to live or joshua as they were above the ocean. If anything i hope clive lives cause im tired of final fantasy characters sharing the joe star bloodline and dying lol
17:36 I really like your version of the ending
I have this crazy theory that Metia (the red star) is actually Leviathan hiding in space (I mean, if he figured out his purpose was to get absorbed by Ifrit, why not leave?), and Clive destroying Origin and shooting the big blue lazer up is like a signal telling him to come back and that's why the red glow turns off.
There are no more Eikons or magic anymore. Leviathan would cease to exist.
Leviathan likely got killed by ultima centuries before Clive’s timeline.
Maybe dlc would explore why he died.
I love the whole ‘where on journey ends…’ makes way for the next ff game (whenever that is) chills
I honestly think the ending was perfect, though I did figure it'd be contentious. This is all my personal interpretations:
Clive surrenders himself because he knew with him alive that the world would still be chained to it's past of magic/dominants/eikons, and by dying all of it will be relegated to the past.
The quote that most sticks with me during the end game side quests is:
"Truth" is dependent on mass belief, this also means that the "Truth" is not immutable and may be changed.
Everyone's picking up some of the points here and there but to lay out the 7 points that basically prove Clive survived:
4. Clive tells Harpocrates that after his quest/journey is done he will put down the sword and take up the pen
5. So no way Joshua would just happen by coincidence to title it the same thing considering it was based off a isolated conversation between ultima and Clive
2. That's a comically large reach based in reality, not even the defined realm of this fiction
3. Nah, he lies again, and that's the last time he lies. He's dead and can't keep that promise
4. Harpocrotes takes up that pen after Clive dies to tell the story Clive constantly retold him throughout the game
Just accept that clive is dead, and in my opinion i like the ending it shows that it ends with an happy ending but not the way people wanted
Massive delusional copium
@@northwestclasspnw7974the most important thing is also that tomes literally says that Joshua should become a chronicler after the battles, because he’s a talented writer. Also crystal curse is a death sentence and Clive literally used all the worlds aether. He’s fried and died quasi instantly after using the spell on that beach.

You're all wrong. Torgal wrote the book.
Joshua lived and wrote the book
Clive destroy magic/plague and died
Hundred years are passed
And is all a final fantasy in a new world.
All my friends either don’t have a ps5 or are not fans of final fantasy so the ending depression is real by not being able to talk about the ending. Just wanted to see Clive and Jill together at the end honestly as I did not care nearly as much about the other characters. The ambiguity is the worst part lol
Everyone lives happily ever after in Xenos version 😂 even Dion who for sureeeee got smoked by Ultima lmao
People are on another level of copium because they can’t handle tragedy 😂
Respect 🫡
13:57-14:00. Wheres the boat?
i like happy endings.. i got frustrated with this ending.. its so sad!! my ending would be Clive getting married with Jill in that white daisy garden overlooking view.. Rosaria restored under the rule of Joshua… Dion is ruling too. Clive with Jill continues the legacy of Cid… will there be a better ending when finishing new game plus?
When the damn star went out I lost it
They made it open for us to choose, I will say Clive alive.
Gav, the best man
I believe if someone is alive it's clive, we've been told phoenix's flames don't bring the dead so that's joshua out of the equation
then there was a quest with loresman where clives tells him after this is over he'll drop the sword and take the quill and write about his journey, then he wrote the book under joshua's name to honor him as he did once before for cid
that's my copium anyway so...
Listen, i know x-2 gets a lot of flag for good reason... but if i need an abomination to get a good end then be it, let me have xvi-2.
Fck that. You would ruin a game and tragedy for cheap thrills?
We should get dlc adding to the world, not rewriting a beautiful ending to a tragic heroic character.
Not every game needs to have comically dumb b crowd Hollywood good ending.
I want an alternative ending via DLC even if that is not Canon mang
So sad short term ending, but a happy long term ending
what pains me the most is when I see Torgal looking up the window... I can atleast move on when people is in pain... but it was TORGAL.. "waiting and hoping" for Clive to come back again... a dog's pain, I cannot take!
Torgal knew. And he accepted it. Dogs are so smart.
Holy copium
To read all the comments that say "Clive ledgit survive all of this and that the petrification ends on his hand, because... [insert bla bla bla]".
We in germany would say: "Ich mach mir die Welt, wie sie mir gefällt."
I cried no less than 4 times throughout the entire game, gav and torgal in the ending crush my soul when Clive dies. I love this game so very much
My theory is they both were reborn as those two boys in the end as both Clive and Joshua are descendants of the Phoenix, regardless of whom wields the power to turn into it. Also because the actual power of the Phoenix - accourding to legend - is to be reborn (not to be revived)
@2:34 you are cracking me the fuck up LMFAOOOOO
Your ending story are great bro...square give us dlc with this happy ending now!
Few issues with the logic of the story though:
7:00 Clive uses Pheonix Down of Joshua. So basically Joshua lives to write the book where magic is no longer existed in the world.
At this point, if and when FF17 comes out and it's going to have the most generic happy ever after ending, I'd full on give it a 10/10. I'm so done with sad endings in a FF game.
Now that SE has confirmed there will be 2 DLC, I wonder if either of them will resolve the ambiguous ending.
This ending reminded me straight up of the Klonoa: Door to Phantomile ending, it's sad but I know the story went on
I don't think thats where Clive died, throughout the game he never showed any signs of the curse affecting him from using magic, what caused him to suffer now is using Ultima's power which are on another level. Theres every chance he keeps living as the curse only spreads if magic is continued to be used.
i think clive just loose the hand because all magic disapear so he didn't fully transform into stone, joshua is dead i think and clive used is name for the book
Man i need about a week to recover from that ending.
@@Lorenzferus I’ll give u three reasons that basically confirm he survived:
If fans waited for ffx part 2 then we can too have happy ending
Love your ending😂! My ending is that Joshua lives because Clive used the power of the phoenix (enhanced by Ultimas powers) on him. Clive lives because of either the phoenix down that he had on him since discovering that Joshua was alive from phoenix gate OR Jill's prayer to Metia the star which goes out at the end. I think the best ending for Dion would be his death in duty- I just don't see him living life normally after all the things that he did. If he was to live, I would like the reappearance of the girl with the medicines. But yeah no body, no death 😂.
My ending is this whole story was made up by a random guy called Joshua rosfield. Makes the most sense to me.

Theory: Joshua died, Clive took his name like he did on Cid's. There's a sidequest when he said when his quest with Ultima is over, he's gonna write a book too. And that "Final Fantasy" is derived from what he said literally to Ultima.
I do like your ending version very much!!
But Clive also had the crazy Ultima power so maybe he used it to revive Joshua 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Have you not read the lore? Torgal is descendant of Fenrir, mythical eikon like dog who protected Shiva. He’s Shivas mythical dog Fenrir.
@@Bahamut998 i have read the lore. I am just choosing to believe that Torgal could possibly be Leviathan because 1. The game already has examples of legends or records of the past only being a fraction of the truth and 2. Good boy becomes gooder boy

I like XEEMS ending. It makes perfect sense NOCRINGE
I feel like it was Joshua’s journal.
Mythos becomes Lagos and saves the world.
Red star = metia's wish, aka jills wish for clive to live. The fact it dims at the end means he is dead.
I also felt that metia for some reason always represented Clive’s life.
Clive just can't die.... he fucking can't, I won't accept it...
Torgal's howl got me...
He’s not 100% dead cause if you do the final jill side quest it says that the rising sun symbolizes Clive returning to jill, hence the ending of a rising sun.
Also Cid lived for years with a petrified arm so the hand does really count as a death blow
But yeah I think he’s probably dead
He is not dead xD
Petrification stops at his hand, cause he tried to use magic after using up everything that made him Mythos/Logos and Ultimas power.
@@GiorgosAigio96 yeah I didn’t think about The “Who witnessed the final fight” part, I guess that means it has to be Clive
