Clara Schumann's dramatic setting of the poem, “Lorelei,” was a birthday gift to her husband Robert in 1843. Her mastery of the keyboard is evident in this exciting and descriptive accompaniment that features driving eighth-note figures reminiscent of Schubert's “Erlkönig.”
