  • I pulled this old garden bench out of the trash. It had certainly seen better days, but all the cast iron needed was a little clean up. A few new pieces of wood, and it is just like new.
This garden bench restoration tutorial is easy to follow so you can fix up your own garden bench to look like new!

Just picked up a garden bench from the trash and about to give it a second life. Hopefully mine can turn out as well as yours. Thx for the video.

Thanks for the upload. I'm doing this project this week. I'm going to try and round down the first board (next to the knees) since my original was rounded down. Subscribed.

Thank you for showing your mistakes - we learn from them! Great to know we are not all perfect, but the bench is. Well done.

It's a bit late after you made this film but thanks for the information especially regarding your mistakes. I made the same mistakes too and thought I was going crazy. A perfectly measured bench slat that turned out to be much too short. Now I know why !. Hope your bench is still okay.

I found some free bed slats, on a hunch I took them and brought them home. They fit perfectly into the space on the arms! The edges are nice and rounded too.
I sanded them a little, primed them, and I’m going to paint them and install them soon!

Thank you! I thought it's just more fun to see someone else's mistakes, so I should be honest and share them - hehe. I'm so glad I finally got this bench back together!

Don't feel bad I'm restoring a bench right now and it kicked my butt too. All the bolts had to be cut off they were so rusted. Lots of learning as I go.

This made me feel better about my own 52 trips to the hardware store. 😆 Turned out beautiful!

Lots of time consuming work but wow, did it ever pay off. It turned out beautiful! I love free roadside shopping ,saving things from the landfill and making them beautiful again. Awesome job. Hugs from the southeast coast of Florida🌴😎💙😎🌴

Stupid board is right! I was so mad, but the result was worth it - even if it took longer than it should have!

Was wonder about first boards, thought also too thin . Confused about board size. Mine are all the same size. I think it’s because youse tighten the back first.

Where did you get the cedar?

You didn't happen to have measurements for those slats do you?

Was it a problem not having rounded edges on the slats? I'm wondering if sanding would be enough not to pinch people's thighs when they sit. I have the iron ends of the bench but no screws and no slats, and the bench is a little different from yours, but I think the slat size of yours will work. I really don't want to round edges...maybe the front ones...

You could "round the edges" slightly with your sander. Although, it's not a problem, I've sat on this bench several times, no pinching ;) I think the boards are spaced out enough that it wasn't a problem here.

I made a very lucky discovery. There was a bed on the curb and on a hunch I took the slats home. They are the perfect width and height for the bench! I learned from your mistake and measured them one by one to drill them in. Those stupid holes were spaced so crooked.
No sanding no hassle, I gave them a gentle sanding, primer, and am going to paint them soon. Bed slats!

I just finished a table that was a bear every step of the way. The end result was so worth it though.

Drill the holes and countersink before you sand and stain
