The closest tri-color vasi airport from Venice is FD38 Wellington Aero Club, but you could definitely ask them because it's owned by an aviation neighborhood called (surprise surprise) Wellington Aero Club. If you don't want to go there, then there's N97 Hiatt Airport in North Carolina which is public.
Never asked, but always assumed it was a sensor of sorts. I'm amazed how often what I always assumed were complex technologies are actually basic physics (think 6 pack). Fascinating video! Thanks!
“White on white, fly all night. Red on white, pilot’s all right. Red on red, pilot is dead.” Didn’t ALL of us hear it taught that way? I recommend that you should include the names that “VASI” and “PAPI” stand for. That was absent from the video. Visual Approach Slope Indicator Precision Approach Path Indicator
great video! I've been wondering how those work. a touch of constructive criticism for your videos, (I've seen almost all of them) it'd be great if you added a closing or summary to the end to just separate out the main points.
These lights were the idea and design of an electrician working at the Royal Aircraft Establishment Bedford Uk. His name was Sam Kidd and he received an award for his work in the Late 1960's £250. The internal design are lamps with a red lens in front of the lamp at the top and a white lens below set back in a box with a narrow opening of 75 -100mm. This is how the light changes, when low the pilot sees the light shining through the red lens and when high sees the same lamp through the white lens. Very simple with no moving parts.
The B747 and Concorde has an exception for 3 white 1 red. B747’s exception: It’s cockpit is 21ft above the sensor, so the aircraft has: 3 white 1 red due to the cockpit height. Concorde’s exception: The sensor was put on the belly of the aircraft and the aircraft had to have a 15 degree slope, so like the B747, the cockpit was higher than normal.
I've been scouring the inter web-a-net for a Tricolor VASI example, & haven't found one yet. I was hoping your video would have had one ... but nope. I'm wondering if they even exist. They're like the Bigfoot of VASIs.
@Grace Jackson Never experienced that before. I have seen cars with purple & blue headlights, which are illegal. Normal headlights will be white with a slight yellow hue, if they are incandescent... or a slight blue hue if they are halogen & HID. But I never seen what you are describing.
@Grace Jackson If you are talking about color changes from a green sky... like you see from a tornado producing storm cloud... that's the result of an atmospheric phenomenon, where the atmosphere at ground level is absorbing the low frequencies of the white headlight, & only the higher frequencies are passing through the air, reaching your eyes. The high frequencies of visible light are perceived as purple or violet. So it's not really an optical illusion, in this case, because you are seeing violet or purple light. I never witnessed it personally, but I've heard people describe white headlights looking purple under a green tornado producing storm cloud before.
A few questions. If it is located to the left or right , won't the pilot end up landing to the left or right of the land way? How is the three degrees derived? Is it the angle of attack?
Three degrees in the vertical sense, you can see the lights generally 30 degrees left of right of them, so landing to the right of them and on center line isn't an issue at all. Fly Safe! -Jon
Just left over from many years ago when there wasn't standardization. There's a few pro's and cons of each type that makes it more or less desirable at different airports.
*@**4:27** ~ Everybody knows that Middlefield Ohio’s Geauga County’s airport has Tricolor Vasi lights, duh. Lol* 😂 Well, at least I believe they have them. Glad it helps! Thanks for the input too!
You can add Pulsating VASI. Very nicely explained.
KCXE in Chase City, VA has tri-color VASIs on runway 18.
Nice job with the drone to show the lighting

I have installed these. After installation and initial set up the airport owner commissions a test flight to confirm the correctness.
very interesting explanation

How cool. I wondered how these worked.
Brother, that was super helpful. Thank you so much.
Great presentation. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!

They're like the Bigfoot of VASIs.
The 28 airports left in the US with tricolor VASIs are: 02C, 08R, 0G0, 0TE4, 15N, 1C1, 1S4, 1U2, 2A6, 2O3, 2XS2, 3M8, 5I4, 5MD9, 5V4, 94FL, 9K7, C81, CA92, FD38, K08, MD31, N97, O20, T56, U01, U78, W24
@@aquila8819 The only one I know of is at KSHW - A fictional Airport I created using ADE for my FSX. ROFL
@Grace Jackson
You mean mistaking the colors, because of color blindness ... or forgetting what the colors mean?
@Grace Jackson
Never experienced that before. I have seen cars with purple & blue headlights, which are illegal.

Fort Myers (94FL) might be your best bet (being our of Venice)

Excellent video. Thank you.
excellent thanks.
Withholding the last paychecks past the end of the last pay period is illegal in Alaska.
Do these function the same way as an OLS on an aircraft carrier? Would an airport ever have an OLS and VASI/PAPI lights?
OLS is only used on aircraft carriers. Navy only... & no... OLS functions very different from PAPIs & VASIs.
I was always told a good way to remember it is "All red? You're dead!"
Thanks Man!!
why are papi lights a line to the runway centerline?
how do they turn red 1 by one?
Is papi and vasi are same?
they are similar, but PAPI is more technological
VASI has two rows of two lights. PAPI has one row of four lights and is newer technology than a VASI.
OERK still has vasi lights
Sir at what angle papi light is install?
Usually 3 degrees.
what is simulation?
Why are there multiple systems? Why not just have VASI or PAPI? Why do we have more than one system? It just seems unnecessary
