  • This First Flush Downspout Water Diverter Product Review gives a demonstration of how to put this system together and describes how it works. We then use a hose to fill the system up and show how it traps the first flush of debris and allows the clean water to go into your water storage tank.

    Great demo. I love the idea of using a clear pipe for visual inspection. (I would use much shorter clear portion of the pipe due to the algae growth.) Also I would make that filter at least 2 meters long and let it pass algae, because I like to do my maintenance tasks once a year. (Not every month in the rainy season, lots of crap on my roof.) This type of system can easily outlast... me. What surprises me the most it's the fact that this video is not as popular as it should be.

    I am in the process of installing a rainwater harvesting system for my garden and have watched all of your rainwater system videos, lots of good information, thank you. I decided not to purchase a First Flush system because once I was able to see mechanically exactly how it works, I was able to build my own larger system using 4" PVC pipes instead of just the 3" that their system is designed to use. Because my roof is so large with 4,000 square feet of roof, I need to collect the first 40 gallons in the first flush before it goes to my storage tanks, so by using larger diameter pipes I can accomplish that easier. Multiple 4" PVC pipes with screw-on plugs at the bottom allow the water to slowly drip out to drain the system and a 4" to 3" adapter at the top catches a plastic Whiffle Ball inside to trap the water inside the first flush storage tank. Very easy system to build and works perfectly.

      I have links to the amazon products I used. They are in the show notes of the video. Just make sure you match your system size - 3" or 4".

      I scan UA-cam daily to get some great DIY tips, even though some of the equipment isn't available here I can stil make a plan or try creating my own thing, cheap cause some companies are out to bank rob you like example this system to buy ready to install kit cost R825 South Africa that's round about $82 US dollars your video helped me to build my own version for R150 that's about $16 us dollars

    0:54 shows, what I think is a, optional stainless steel screen, which I imagine might reduce maintenance. Or make the system last longer.

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  3 роки тому

      That is an optional stainless steel screen system. I neglected to mention it in this video but have shown it in my other videos. Our initial blog post shows this device as well as all others in the system and where you can buy them. greatescapefarms.com/educational-diy-rainwater-collection-system-all-you-need-to-know/

  • @graceanthony

    That was an excellent demonstration but I would like to know if you have to clean out the contaminated section after every heavy rain fall.

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  3 роки тому

      That depends on your situation. I only clean that section on my system out once a year. If you have a "dirty" roof you may have to clean it out more often than that. My roof is metal and there are no tall trees close by. If I had and asphalt shingle roof with tall trees that dropped a lot of leaf litter, I'd have to clean it a lot more often.

    I love this and it looks easy to make as well. What type of ball is that, plastic? foam? just wondering what weight is needed for it to divert water?

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  2 роки тому +1

      To divert the water the most important thing is the buoyancy. The ball in the kit is light enclosed plastic, but I think any ball that floats would do it. I had planned on making a do it at home kit for this concept but just haven't got around to it yet.

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  Рік тому

      I can't remember where I bought this one several years ago. They do sell them on Amazon, but they are expensive: amzn.to/3DDwHhi (I am an amazon affiliate and would make a small commission if you purchased this product, at no additional cost to you).

  • @SamwiseOfRobb

    Great demo. I found the clear pipe is 4 times the cost of the first flush itself. I'm looking at acrylic from China. Is there another product might be better value?

    • @greatescapefarms

      Standard PVC is your cheapest route. I only did the clear plastic for the demo video.

  • @GTNBY2
    @GTNBY2 6 років тому +6

    Where did you get the clear pipe? That would be a good piece to have on any system so you can see how much debris has been collected.

    • @deadfred821
      @deadfred821 5 років тому

      🤔I would imagine it could/would also encourage algae growth; particularly if located on the southern side of a structure....

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  3 роки тому

      The clear PVC tubing was special order and was about 50 times what normal PVC costs. I got it only for demo purposes. Unfortunately, I do not have the vendor info any longer.

    • @greatescapefarms
      @greatescapefarms  3 роки тому

      @Deadfred8211 - Initially I thought the same thing about algae, but after thinking about it, algae should not be an issue. The system is designed to be self cleaning and empties out after a number of minutes (after the rain stops) to reset the system. Because of this, the clear tube would be empty most of the time that it is not raining and therefore would not be able to grow algae.

      I'm afraid I do not have experience buying in Europe. However, if you look at the parts you should be able to piece one together with parts from your local hardware supplier and perhaps a dollar store or toy store (for the ball).
