It's time to flush the nasties! In this episode, we build and install our DIY first flush system for our shipping container home roof. This system will help pre-filter the rainwater before it enters our tanks. Also, Papa Donkey comes by to check on the progress of the house...
The ball valve is a nice touch but you might consider adding a conventional y style cleanout 8 - 10 inches above the valve since it is a reduction. If persistent debris start to clog the valve you can take a hose and spray it out.
Please don’t change anything about your videos! They are well made and edited. Music, as in many YT vids, is not overwhelming, especially for me being hard of hearing.

I just want to tell you that it is such a pleasure watching you two making your videos. There are so many of these idiots that get a couple chickens a goat or two and tell everyone how to farm but if you call them on any of their practices they get totally bent out of shape and make outrageous threats about blocking you and you dont have any knowledge about it. Well i had the farm that raised hundreds of cows and goats and bailing hay planting acres of corn wheat soybeans and I am not totally stupid. Threaten if they wish i wasnt going to watch him any more anyway. I love you calm people that just have fun and dont try to make the world think you are geniuses. Thanks so much for such a clean channel..love you both you are so lucky to have each other. Oops i mean all 3 of you. Assemble as much of the pipe run as possible on the ground and then lower into the ditch.
The only priming/gluing in the ditch is at each end.
Saves sooooo much time and hassle.
Don't need primer it's new pipe and it's not under pressure I have irrigation systems that I've installed over 20 years ago they're still holding up perfect without primer
Risers go in last. Fitting up is always easier that way.
I hope they know an electrician personally lol
@@edward88yahoo new or old pipe is irrelevant . prime cleans and enhnces the bond. the fact that you didn't use it shows that you didn't know what you were doing. the fact it's still holding is pure luck.

Pro tip: for long runs of pipe in trenches it is much easier/faster/better to assemble them beside the trench and then drop it in, that way you only have to do a couple glues in the trench.
Right? Would have also been easier if they did all the pipe in the trench first.
Rehoboth Farm whether they do it through a long process doesn’t matter, of course if there’s an easy alternative then great but either way, they’re amateurs and they’ll either complete it in a week or a day but they’ll complete it. I think what they’re doing is so inspirational.

I love your videos. There's some other channels that have couples building stuff, but they come off as reality shows. You guys don't try to act or any of that other silliness. You have fun, but it's real, and not ridiculously over staged. I love the stuff you guys build and how you explain.

the home is really coming together!! you guys work together fantastic!! Where did you guys gain so much knowledge on off grid building?? and your building skills?? Spencer never stops amazing us with his skills.
I’ve run my fair share of PVC pipe over the years and I can confidently say you guys did great. There’s always the chance of mismeasurement due to fittings, imperfect pipe cuts, etc. I also loved that you painted the exposed sections of pipe and wish there had been an explanation for that so viewers would know that the sun will degrade PVC over time without adequate protection. PVC is made to be out of the sun either in walls, under a house or underground. Painting sun exposed pipe is definitely a must.
Back in 08 we redid underground pipe at family farm. The water was just above tile drain for kitchen. Dad recalled my grandfather dug it in by hand in 30s. It was no less than 6 ft deep and closer to 8 as I recall. At one time the house also had a stone masonry cistern on the other side with hand pump. That was around 12 ft deep and 4 ft diameter. Given a large enough source a stone masonry tank is a great source of usable water. Stone being much cheaper from the pile 100 yards from the house and bags of dry cement for mortar rather than cement being hauled in and poured. The barn had a 6' tall 10-12' diameter tank in the mow.
I'd be running a power cable in that trench to the tanks for pump power/ night light if required. Even just to have a power outlet.... maybe handy down the road.
At least putting in the conduit gives the option of adding these things later with much less effort. A 1" PVC conduit run would give plenty of room for a couple of circuits using 12/2 wire at 15 amps. (go one wire gauge heavier to reduce voltage drop.)

Great Job. Maybe install a Y fitting in the pipe before it goes in the ground in case you need to run a snake in it for clean out. Put a Y fitting with a twist of cap. Just a thought. REAL NEAT JOB, LOOKING GREAT‼️👍👍 Vinny 🇺🇸

I have been collecting and treating rain water for years, I would like to make some suggestion (just in case they are not already in your plans).
1. Since you have three 2500 gal. tanks use one for a settling tank. I always run raw water to my first tank, then fill the rest from about mid level of the first tank.
2. I have a pre-filter and 55 gal settling tank before any of my main tanks (even the 2500 gal. settling tank). This pre-filter is a 100 micron aquarium filter sock on the inlet to the 55 gal tank. (get one of these socks and run your rain water though it just once and you will never collect water without having one in the system). These socks are a bit of a headache because the get dirty real fast if it has not rained for a while and I have been out in the rain changing them more than once. As far as the 55 gal. tank goes, one use and even with the filter sock it collects a lot of silt.
3. If it's more than a day drain and clean the trash removal system.
4. I use a slow sand filter for my rain water, lot of information online.
5. I also have a 30 gal activated charcoal filter to remove farm chemicals from my water (that dust you see in the 100 micro filter sock was once in a farm field and you don't want to call one of those late night TV lawyers because you have non Hodgkin's lymphoma)
Oh the joys of plumbing! As I have learn in many of these, the order you assembly the pipe parts can be very important.You have to visualize in your head how it will all work step by step. Angles can be fun stuff with this too. In hind sight the 90 degree elbow on the output of the diverter should have not been glued on the the assembly hooked to the house. This should have been left until you had the pipe in the ground and the vertical in place then you could cut it off and glue the elbow in place. I wish you well in thinking through future plumbing projects!
I dont think you understand the power of your videos, not just yours but others like Van Life, Living Off Grid...the feel good videos. To others reading yeah yeah they get money off it, good for them. These videos show what its like to live the way God intended: Pure LOVE; love of one another, love of living, love of nature, love making, love of failure, love of learning and on and on. This is what our souls want to do. I thank you for showing us Truth=Love, may God be with you and may you always have This. :)

You should have a good filter system . It,s amazing how much ecoli gets into the system from bird droppings. But you also must keep water collection systems separate. Well for cooking, laundry and showering.

With the amount of flow coming down that pipe, you could install a micro hydro turbine in that before the water hits the ground pipe- might be an interesting projecto to add to the solar ( and maybe wind ? )

Just a suggestion though... If your rain water collection system doesn't work, you can:
make a big funnel over your water tanks and put one or two layers of cloth to directly filter rainwater.
And have replacement, washable cloth filters if the ones in use gets dirty.
I don't know how you do it, guys- BUT you succeed in making even draining systems interesting enough to watch for a quatre of an hour,.. and time flies! You can do magic- ...not to forget your two absolutely gorgeous assistants Bear and Papa Donkey, much Love from Germany, Marina 🐕🐎😉👍
Having a tank closer to the house and draining strait to the tank then equalizing to the others will work. I'm glad I found your build I'm planning mine very similar
I've been where you are - I feel you're pain. Suggestion 1: add a 3/4" adapter + hose connector to first flush bottom. Makes it easier to water your garden around the house with rich first flush rain water.
Suggestion 2: add a 5 to 10 micron water filter to the cistern intake. Just keeps all debris out.

As a plumber, I hope it never freezes there. Reason being, those ball valves will break. Example: When the ball valve is in the off position, the center rotating gate traps water in the middle. Like a can of coke in the freezer, the ice will split the ball valve - no room to expand.

Noticed your hole to the water feed in the water storage tank is really low. Generally you want that hole to be six inches or higher from bottom of tank to avoid the sediment that will appear.
The drain should be at bottom but any outgoing feed lines to house that’ll be for showering and drinking should be higher.

Coming along great, guys! Can't wait for it to be finished. Such a contrast between your gorgeous, well-built house and the falling down dock. Be great when all you have to finish is the fence and the dock, but how will we get our fix then? You'll need to sell and start another one. lol Come build in Mexico. No torrential day after day rain. No humidity. Gorgeous climate every day of the year. Hardly any bugs or snakes. Fabulous locals and culture. You would love it.

Your attention to detail is so impressive!
If you need to 'unglue' a mistake in PVC pipe simply cut the pipe about an inch from the fitting. Apply the PVC glue on the inside of the pipe and then light it. The glue will burn hot and will burn out within 15 seconds. Then use a pair of pliers to remove the burnt scrap piece of pipe, leaving the fitting ready to re-use. Works a treat.
I am eager to see how your water catchment/storage system works, as I am sure you are as well.
It will certainly be prettiest in the State of Texas! Everything you guys do is so precise and neat! You get a A++ for craftsmanship! Getting everything right with all the fittings is not as easy as it might seem, which is why Plumbers charge so much $.

I feel as though we are with you each week. Thank you for letting us tag along. Guys, I am sure there will be no where near enough pressure to send water up and in to your tanks. Do not bury those huge tanks, but instead buy a 500 gallon underground tank and bury it between the house and your tanks. Cut and install your main line into the 500 gallon tank underground. Now, purchase a 2000 gallon submersible pump and place it in your 500 gallon underground tank with a float valve for automatic shut off. Run new pipe to your large storage tanks. You can stay with your 4inch pipe going into the new underground mid tank, but your outlet can be no larger than 2 inches, don’t worry, your submersible pump will keep up just fine. So sorry, but you just do not have the volume or height to overcome the head pressure of your horizontal run at the tanks. Good luck guys!! Please read comment for additional important details.
Forgot to mention a very important detail: you will need to install the submersible pump with quick disconnect fittings going in and out. All pumps eventually fail and will need to be replaced. your submersible will be on the bottom of your 500 gallon buried tank, so it is important to use flexible piping so you can raise the pump up and change it our if and when it fails. You can go with a regular swimming pool type of pump above ground, but you will need to move everything close to your large above ground tanks. either way is fine.I prefer submersible so there is no pump noise at all.

Don’t throw out your mistake bits of pvc, they might come in handy for patch jobs later. Also use some press & seal to keep the dirt out of the pipes when fitting them in the trench, you can easily rip it off when you go to glue it.

Think about finding a way to recirculate the water in the pipes that are underground, a 1 inch line from pipes at house back to the tanks. Water will get stagnant, small pump would work.

The water is going to go stagnant in the sediment catching side and will mix with your good water unless you keep it drained quite often.
Can't imagine it will be that hard to just open the valves and drain them after every rain...
They just need a small hole drilled in the bottom so it drains slowly. The valve becomes useless at that point because after a day there shouldn't be any water in the pipe.

I sure hope that trench was cut on a slope so that the water flows downward and doesn't sit level to get stagnant. Trust me a crew did that at Exxon and my crew had to go back and re do it because they didn't trust the other crew to straighten out their own mess.
Brilliant idea to use the auger to help dig those trenches! Can't wait for the next video!
