Now, I have one or two more things to mention about REmake that I didn't think of in time for the video.
After thinking about it more and more, it's kind of insane how much of REmake's early game was restricted all for that one crimson-head scripted sequence. The hallway leading to the plant/tiger statue/side room, the crow puzzle room which leads to the cemetery via gate, and the forest 2nd floor balcony are locked away until you get the armor key...of course in addition to every other room that originally required the armor key. You're SO railroaded into the sword key + imitation key path that you literally have no way of obtaining any of the masks until the armor key. I just don't think it was worth the trouble, just for that ONE crimsonhead to pop up like that. I know the triggers for crimsonheads to stand up are related to how long in-game it's been, and I would be interested to know if anyone has tried to spend hours in the mansion while killing the zombies but without grabbing the dog whistle. I'd imagine, again, that NO crimsonheads are allowed to stand until the scripted one, but I'd love to know if someone went the distance to test it.
Also, there's a 4th pre-placed zombie in the basement, near the elevator. I believe he comes back as a regular zombie after the residence, but I'm not 100%.
Let me know if you discovered something I didn't touch on in this video!
Damn, straight to patron, not even a subscriber. Like take me to dinner first
I still have hope. I'm sure one day we'll get Dead Rising 3 DLC video.
How does this have 5 likes? Do people actually want the DR3 DLC video? lmao

Couldn't disagree more about the main hall OST track... 'where's Wesker' is probably the best track in the game, absolutely ominous, mysterious, and iconic piece from Ueda
The bit about being able to look away during a horror movie and have the scary/disturbing parts play regardless is such a great point. I don't think the interactivity of a survival horror being an important part of the experience is a new concept, but the actual progression to overcome/get through the scary parts really draws on something deeper. I had a very similar experience playing Pathologic- it would get in my head and just really make me feel kind of unwell and claustrophobic? So I'd put it down and go do something else, but the fact that I still had "unfinished business" was like a siren song that had me returning. It's not even perseverance at that point, it's just... *oh shit* ...survival
As always an amazingly well done and in-depth review that looks at so much more than just is this "good or not"
Your transition into the remake made me smile, well done ;)
(it is really cool that this remake was from the same developer and that they clearly did a good job understanding what made their game good and improved on that overall)
Great job as always, look forward to your next video!
Further notes on Richard in the remake, if you 'kill' yawn with his help as Jill it will spring back to life to attack her just for him to hop in the way and protect Jill before the snake slithers away for the later encounter.
Him dying also results in a small setback for both Chris AND Jill as it prevents you from getting the assault shotgun for either playthrough.
Been getting into your videos in a big way recently - some really good stuff here! Interesting to hear you mention Matthewmatosis as I was definitely getting a sense of his style in your delivery. Keep it up man. Looking forward to no longer being the only person that’s played Dead Rising 3’s DLC.
You guys have some serious balls to beat the game with invisible enemies I can't imagine doing it. And Im a hardcore fan of the firsr game.
You’re the only video essay channel I like, every other channel like this, just regurgitates the plot and gameplay mechanics without a hint of critique.
Dude, I swear I was going crazy - this has become a big issue with youtube game essayists lately. There’s so much bloat and pointless synopsizing, or just playing full, minute long cutscenes verbatim without any commentary. I’m not here to watch what I’ve already seen lol, I’m here for *your* input. Like, if I’m physically skipping sections of your analysis, it’s not a very good analysis.
I think Dorkaxe is one of the few right now that does it right, but I also blame youtube for incentivizing content creators to pad out their videos when we can have something more succinct and effective. There’s nothing wrong with having a longer video, just as long as you’re actually using that time.
Idk, maybe I’ve finally become a boomer.
The one guy who did the elder scrolls analysis did great ones too
I like Dorkaxe and Saltfactory, that's really it
Very high praise, there, I appreciate it!
@@SaberRexZealot I've only recently found this channel and his scripts, cadence, and way he critiques reminds me so much of Matthewmatosis. All you gotta do is give him a Irish accent haha
Excellent video! Probably your best yet.
Really happy to hear that, thanks man. I just replied to dave the same thing, it's hard to tell if a big project ends up being an endless stream of pretentious dribble or not, so I appreciate the validation.
@@Dorkaxe Yeah, I feel ya. Sometimes I get imposter syndrome and think "am I really saying anything of worth?" when talking about my hobbies with other like-minded people.
Another awesome video Dorkaxe keep up great work, I have to say Res 5 was my first resident evil and I honestly had a blast with a friend through high school I felt it was underrated in that it got so much criticism but it was for me a good mix of overtones with horror cheesy one liners and action and really more just fun entertainment kinda like dead rising 2, wasn’t perfect and had a number of gameplay mechanical issues but not terrible, maybe u might do a review for that one day
Oh shit here we go 👏 I’m excited for this
"Chris?... Stop it" kills me every single time
Wow someone who doesn’t have a European accent doing a resident evil retrospective holy shit how rare!
I noticed a big disparity between people who played resi 1 when it first came out, vs people playing it today. When it first came out it really did stand out. The visuals were good for the day and the OG soundtrack really added to the atmosphere.
I was genuinely impressed with the character models. I wonder if the pre-rendered backgrounds gave them more polygons to work with when designing them? Specifically, Jill's chest looks so much less pointy/blocky than Lara's did in Tomb Raider. Weird thing to notice, but what can I say.
@Dorkaxe I think the reason for tht was cause unlike environments in modern REs which needs to b scanned with the RE engine, pre rendered backgrounds barely take any of the engines processing power regardless of which engine u use since they're at the end of the day 2D rly detailed and beautifully drawn art, makin the lions share of whatever engine u use focused more on character, item, enemy models, like imagine if an Re engine game was made with pre-rendered backgrounds? The models would look so realistic it'd legit look like a movie and with fixed cam angles it might as well b,plus the environments would never get glitchy even if ur playing on an older console, all tht with added bonus of capcom spending less money but ahh one can dream 😅
I'd honestly forgotten about "Save Items" in video games.. now you've reminded me of losing a bunch of Omikron: The Nomad Soul progress because I didn't have a random gold ring you needed to save -_-
Oof
David Cage games are a hell in their own right.
Another fabulous video
I really enjoyed this one. Here's a couple reactions I had while watching it...
- I've always liked that idea of a second playthrough for the familiarity. So many times it feels like ideas solidify going through a game a second time. Of course I also think a first impression is invaluable. My main concern with trying for a second playthrough is my videos already come out so infrequently going through the game once. 😂
- When you played the basement theme from the Duelshock version, I thought you were joking. For a while too.
- I enjoyed the twists and turns you took while discussing each title. Instead of covering all the different aspects of the game piece by piece, it felt like you wrote wherever your whims took you, and I liked the ride. 🙂
- I'm glad you mentioned the dog hallway in REmake. Running through it for the first time in 2002 and not having the dogs burst through is a moment of subverting my expectations that I'll always fondly remember.
Are you going to continue on with the future games next?
Happy you enjoyed it, when I finish something as lengthy as this I kind of can't tell if it's pretentious garbage or not lol
Probably not RE2 for a while, I'll have to see if youtube figures out what to do with resident evil i.e. pushing it to the right audience. I have a gameplan for the next couple months, we'll see if I stick to it.
I can tell you the max HP difference is noticeable in the giant spider boss fight. That thing can off Jill in 2-3 hits while Chris can take a good few more.
I found this out myself in an ill-fated speed run attempt
That sucks, what a way to end a run. I lost my no-save file run in the Lisa Trevor fight, since I didn't think she could launch me off the stage into an abyss. 5 hours of my day gone for no reason lmao
Dang I had no idea of the DS version, but I'm so glad you covered this. I completely identified with your "familiarity but not mastery" and second playthrough ideas, they were really good ideas to build the video around and something I definitely identified with for sure. There's games like Pikmin that I automatically applied the idea too in my brain. Overall 0/10 for the Lisa disrespect :P
But fr I will check out Signalis I love the art direction!
Pikmin is good example of the learning/2nd playthrough thing for sure, much like the Dead Rising games. The removal of the scare-factor is a significant portion of what I was talking about, but I suppose that mostly had to do with RE2 remake, RE7, and Darkwood.
Lisa is a baby's first Mr. X as far as I'm concerned lol, not that Mr. X is great, but either way. Yeah Signalis is great, glad you might give it a shot. I can't believe it's on console, since it feels so indie, but I saw that it's on...well, everything, which is awesome.
man, that's probably the most comprehensive look at RE1 in under 2 hours i've seen!
Iirc, the Crimson Head outside the hall where you get the Armor Key will also rise if you pick up the herb next to him. When I was a kid, I was all about picking up every single item regardless of my available inventory, and I remember getting spooked by him grabbing that herb on my first run through that hall 😵💫
Thanks for the vid
I can agree on Darkwood being a very good recent example of horror that actually cower in fear. The first playthrough, the first 2 nights, i didnt come out of my 1 room i barricaded and trapped everywhere, while hearing a knock on the door being afraid i will die, only to later learn it's an event. I also wish to replay that fear, but this is what all media, the novelty its based on goes away after experiencing it the first time. The best we can hope is that new developers learn and use their methods, so we can relive that fear again but in different settings/worlds.
All I'm waiting out for is a Darkwood 2 or some spiritual successor at this point. It's all I keep thinking about now that RE has shown that it can't capture the RE7 magic again (imo dont hate me)
The DS version of the original RE 1 is the BEST among all ports of it. The modifications, change of animations, all new character/enemy models, quick knife/ Quick reload/ Quick 360° turn and new puzzles added makes it more complete.
forrest turns into a zombie advanced directors cut in the origenal RE1. Likewy's, when i saw the end credit fmv's i,'d always wondered as a kid the "Rebecca rescued by chris scene " in the book room (herb file ) why i never sawed it . Never knew that in advanced that's how you decide if rebecca lives or dies dependend how much u take.
great conceptualization of the familiarity but not mastery idea, it makes so much sense for the RE games since they incentivize multiple playthroughs. Usually I leave that Viewtiful Joe analysis in the background but I’m gonna watch it again because of this
The second playthroughs being more enjoyable is something about gaming that I've realized a while ago.
A lot of the "classics" or "all time greats", regardless of genre, I'll play through for the first time and I'd be like "that was alright, pretty good even, but I'm not sure of what the fuss is about", then some time on a rainy day I'll start it up a second time to kill time and realize that it's much more enjoyable the second time around than the first. With the mechanical knowledge and the controls mastered, I can go through the game like a badass and try different and more experimental stuff, then I realize a lot of the all-time classics aren't actually classics because your first playthrough blew you away (a lot of the times it actually doesn't), but because you can replay the game over and over, and still just have as much, if not more, fun than your first time through!
That's why I'm critical of reviews that are like "I paid 20 dollars for a 2-8 hour game", cause if I can play that 2 hour game 100 times and have a blast each time, then it's more than worth the asking price.
I feel like with so many steam sales and backlogs etc that we're so concerned about playing through a game and moving onto the next as quickly as possible that we really do miss out and don't get to appreciate games and we judge everything on our first playthrough alone.
I genuinely don't think RE5 is intentionally cheesy. I really think they thought it would be awesome and badass if Chris punched the boulder
The zombie that disappears next to the stairs and big bird cage is the one that follows you throughout the mansion.
Okay, I like your critique. You offered some new opinions and were the first person to say you like OG RE a little better. You went in depth on the game mechanics and creation/art beats and didn’t just do a story run through.
the basement theme is funny af 😂
Here's a random game suggestion, Westerado Double Barreled, I think you'd do a great job looking at the intricate nature of the game. Maybe you've heard of it before, it was a minor cult classic for pc, but I dont think any "big" review channels have talked about it. Maybe it'd make for a fun spring/summer vid
You've basically green-lit the formation of that video, congratulations lmao I've had it on my "possible video" list since the inception of this channel, it's a fun game but I just never got around to it due to other requests. This is officially a request, so it'll be given higher priority than before.
@@Dorkaxe that's awesome man! I look forward to the possible video!
Good critiques for Lisa Trevor and other aspects of the remake that aren't the best.
I remember another video where someone complained about similar things in the remake compared to the original, especially Lisa Trevor, but they didn't really communicate their reasons for this feeling just that they didn't like it.
This made me understand that more, even if I still like remake more.
Resident Evil is my favorite video game series!
I think you'd have a lot of fun playing Lord of the Rings: The Third Age on PS2. It's essentially a LOTR take on final Fantasy X, and it seems like it would be right down the alley of this channel.
That is one that will likely happen at some point for sure, likely the next Lord of the Rings game I cover.
0:41 can relate
42:51
I fucking cackled, that was fantastic.
Can’t wait for resident evil 7 and 8 video
Woah that will be so far in the future lol I'm looking forward to it though, hopefully in the next couple of years (as long as this channel can at some point become profitable)
27:51 It's so bad but also kind of unsettling makes it somehow creepy lol
re3 has item difference password/ differences each time you play. Indeed it makes it way more replayeble! why its not a standaard still baffles me
I think when you said about the soundtrack you mistook the Dualshock and Director's Cut.
And I think that don't have any good music in that version (DC).
i call them metroidvanias. same game progression as dark souls 1 but everything's super close together
instakill hunters can happen, low health advanced RE 1 orig
21:49 - Tell that to the Diablo4 devs . . . .
Trust me when I say this, resident evil 1 WAS scary back in 1996.

🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬
56:59 That's some dogshit wording for a difficulty selection.
"Climbing a mountain" yep, very *normal* activity game. If you're resident evil 5 chris maybe.
Nah mate, survivor horror means that if you are wasteful you will literally lose the ability to progress. No ammo for the boss maybe, or no healing, basically hitting a stone wall and you'll need to reload and do better.
Literally all horror is survival horror, who ever came up with survival horror is stupid and the people that continually fart on about it are stupid. The entire goal of ANY horror is to survive, only a team of idiots would go to any sort of incident unprepared and or unarmed, there is zero reason everyone in a horror game should be "incompetent" as some "special" people constantly cry about.
There is zero horror where people go into an incident hoping to die and the "special elite" team would have gone with alot more than a handgun with 1 clip and a knife, especially not knowing what they were walking into after a team disappeared and couldn't be reached
43:55 could do without the sudden obligatory jabs at REmake 3, mainly cuz it's done to death at this point and honestly focusing on a games good qualities more than mocking something for simply being a black sheep is far more enjoyable at this point. XP
it was 2 seconds man, not that big of a deal
@@Dorkaxe I'm just saying, that's all I've been hearing about it. I tried to phrase my comment in a non-hostile way, it's 2 seconds yeah.
But if the remake 3 vid ends up more of the same bashing I've heard about the game it sets an uneasy expectation for it. Regardless it has flaws and I don't deny that, but I think it's far from the worst modern RE title as I've heard from many vids already for the past few years since it's release. Lmao
It's barely a sheep at all, mate. What good things are in the re3make? Dodging and that's it
>he doesnt like the fart trumpet theme
Not a true fan
i hated the plot-holes in the remake and not RE1 , because the original was the first waaayyyyy back then. Like Bratt never thought to land the helicopter on the pad because the mansion was in running distance, or why he flew off being protected by the chopper . At least throw the rocketlauncher down , Chickenheart!!! The fireplace lit in the room u start the game in, guess the zombies had it chilly because its weeks or months since the lab leak. But our beloved Barry , betray's Jill in the sewer scene and ( if given back his gun ) will help destroy the monster and then ........................ nothing!!!! When asked him : U go on ahead. Not something like : why draw the gun ? My used to be trusted compadre. A (in you're face plot hole) not even present in the first game. NOOO, Barry !!! Beloved father, husband and frend , tell me the truth!!!
Mate were you having a stroke?
The Dual Shock version of the music is absolutely appalling the entire way through the game.
