Welcome to the world of Nightwish and symphonic metal.
The band is from Finland, 3rd and current lead singer, Floor Jansen(Yan-sen) is Dutch. This is from the 2013 Wacken (Vah-ken)festival in Germany.
90-95 % is written and composed by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, including the orchestral backing tracks recorded by the London Philharmonic.
This song is from the 2nd lead singer Anette Olzon era. Anette didn't do operatic vocals, so a choir did that part in the studio version. Every song at this concert was written for one of the first 2 singers, Floor had only been with the band for about 10 months here. She replaced the previous singer mid tour.
This is only a small fraction of what she, and the band, can do.
You're going to get a lot of suggestion for Ghost Love Score from this same show, but you can't go wrong with any of their songs.
Look for a comment from Gabriel Bardac (he'll be here soon). He will give you more info and a links to a lot of their songs.
This "...Orchestral tracks recorded by the London Philharmonic." keeps getting propagated around NW comments. It is not the FULL orchestra and violates their Trademarks and Copyrights!!! A lot of the session musicians that play and record for NW in the London studio ALSO play for the London Philharmonic. That's it! From there it has "telephoned" into it's the full orchestra. It's not just you a lot of people make the same mistake.

I’m glad you enjoyed the performance, but if you guys were hearing what we were hearing then something was wrong with the audio. It sounded like it had two different performances of this song overlaid on top of one another. Regardless, you’ll definitely want to listen to more of Floor’s performances including her solo material. She’s quite extraordinary. But she was born to sing with Nightwish.
They said they were watching the virtual show, and we were seeing Wacken. I'm guessing both audio's were running simultaneously.

Well, if one of them thought Floor sounded “pitchy”, there was definitely something seriously screwed up with their audio ….. or her ears!!!

Floor is classically train and a vocal coach. She can sing in any genre from hard rock to opera. She can growl too. Her former bands were ReVamp and After Forever.

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This song was performed in Wacken Open Air in 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland...
... Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Following the success of Beste Zangers show, Floor performed a series of solo concerts in the Netherlands in early 2020 with songs from her entire career (After Forever, Revamp, Northward, Nightwish, Beste Zangers) following that the last and the largest concert, at AFAS Amsterdam, to be professionally recorded and broadcast online, with the support of a crowdfunding campaign. After several rescheduling, due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the concert took place at the beginning of September 2021 in 3 consecutive days. Not sure if you’re hearing what we are hearing but there’s something wrong with the audio. It strikes me as very odd that you couldn’t even tell that Floor was singing in English. Floor’s diction is pretty good and her pitch is spot on.

I agree that her diction is goodreally good, but pitch is objetive...and she was pitchy in the beginning, when she didn't focus on the song at all. When she concentrated it became much more accurate. It isn't a big deal, back in the day many famous singers were pitchy even on recordings. Live in the later stage of a hard concert it's totally acceptable.

This is not a virtual concert. This was 82000 people at Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany. Joulupukki is a Finnish Christmas figure. Yes, Floor is a little pitchy, just like Luciano Pavarotti or Freddie Mercury. Or actually little less. There is a video about it 🙂 If someone is less pitchy, he/she might be using some sort of pitch correction.

Funny you should mention diction and pitch accuracy as she is routinely praised by music professionals on both these qualities. The Wings of Pegasus channel performed a pitch analysis on Floor Jansen's voice using "Ghost Love Score" from this same concert. He found her to be bang on pitch with no evidence of pitch correction being applied in post. Her diction is actually excellent, but a first time listen to Nightwish can be a bit of sensory overload, so it's not uncommon for people to struggle with comprehension. I can understand pretty well ever word she sings in this song.
BTW, it sounded like you had two videos of this song playing out of sync. Very distracting.

Part of the reason Floor is so stunning is her onset, and her bang-on pitch accuracy, not to mention her diction, phrasing, breath control and ability to flip between styles instantly lol. She's literally unbelievable. Stunning. She brings tears to my eyes even in songs I have heard many, many times, because I know I am hearing something that is impossibly good.

Also, he analyzed one performance where she was pitch perfect. But I have seen a lot where she goes out of pitch as well. She is a human being. An extraordinary singer, who can still make mistakes. Just like anyone else.

I'm very happy you've covered Nightwish. Normally I try very hard not to be negative because it's never very helpful but you've fallen a bit short - you seem to be playing two tracks at the same time and it's really tinny. For a band like Nightwish you have to get the sound right. Whilst no singer on the planet can claim to sing perfectly pitch wise - Floor Jansen is definitely NOT PITCHY , she is classically trained (check out O mio bambino Caro). She's Dutch, the band are Finnish and she's a very technical vocalist coach. Other than that, it was a very good and positive reaction. I feel bad about pointing these things out but I do feel they're very important, especially if you're teachers. Take care 🙂

Okay...I really enjoyed your reaction, but.....the music video's audio quality was really bad. As you are new to Nightwish, many of your 44K subscribers might not have heard this band until now, and might think this is the quality of the band. NOT SO. Please, correct whatever the problem was. This Wacken 2013 concert was an exceptionally perfect video in every aspect, especially the audio. Hope to see more reactions to Nightwish, but with better sound quality on our end. It is very common that new listeners ( especially if they are from the US ) to compare Nightwish to Evanescence, which is not a slight, but as you continue your journey you will find out as we have that there is really no comparison.
My suggestion is to continue your journey, be ready because each song is different, each experience is purely Nightwish. They cannot be labeled as just one style.

What they watched is the virtual concert.
This is not the virtual concert. This was filmed live in front of 82,000 screaming sweaty fans during the 2013 Wacken Open Air metal festival. The virtual show was live streamed in a very elaborate green screen setting, with no visible audience .

Although the band is Finnish, their 3rd female vocalist Floor Jansen (pronounce Yahn-sen) is not. She's Dutch and at this concert less than a year within the band. (actually she wasn't even a member of the band at that moment, but since October 2012 the stand-in for the fired 2nd female vocalist Anette Olzon) and none of these songs were writed for her voice, but for their 1st female vocalist Tarja Turunen who left the band in 2005.
So she had to learn to master all these songs from scratch. (After being asked, she had to book an intercontinental flight from the Netherlands to the US, constantly practicing the songs on her own, and barely 48 hours later (with a jet lag) her journey with Nightwish began on October 1, 2012 in Seattle, her 1st concert with her as a replacement). And now, 45 concerts later, this fantastic concert at Wacken Open Air festival for 82,000+ audience. Floor Jansen's story is truly amazing and you haven't even heard 5% of what she can do vocally.
BTW, (I assume) by not using headphones or earbuds, the sound of the video through the microphone input resonates with the laptop speakers. This makes an unpleasant echo in this recording.
I would suggest watching the official live version of Ghost Love Score from the same Wacken 2013 concert. That live recording is so damn good, and a lot of people's introduction to Nightwish and Floor Hansen. Floor does amazing in that performance.

The insane thing she took over as lead sing 8 months earlier as the sing took ill. She was only standing until they introduced her this concert as their new lead singer full time.
And to think that she was suffering from being burnt out and depressed just before joing Nightwish as well.

Thanks for a fun reaction. FYI, there is a problem with the sound quality of your recording. Your voices sound OK, but the concert sound is very harsh. It sounds like two sources of the concert sound are playing at the same time, but with a slight time delay between them. It seems like the sound from your laptop speakers is being recorded and mixed in with original sound in the video. It's a real shame if you are listening to the music only from laptop speakers; the quality is so poor you are missing much of the music range and the nuances of Floor's vocals. Please consider using good headphones so you can hear and appreciate _all_ of the music.

@@flaviovergottini652 I don't think that they watched the virtual concert because at one point they made a comment about the crowd they saw, that it was not really there because of being it a virtual concert.
My guess is that they at one point wanted to watch the virtual concert version but ended up watching Wacken 2013.
The sound issues we hear are probably because of the laptop audio being mixed with the original video during the editing process, and one of the sources having a slight delay.
@@PatrickVanDijk_NL sorry Patrick, I have to disagree: at the very beginning he said 2021 and the girl on the right read "new" and "virtual world". After few seconds the same girl says "look at him" then the two girls share an high five saying something like "he's Johnny Depp!": if you watch the virtual show, at that moment you'll see two close ups of Tuomas (hat included) who is quite a lookalike of that actor... plus at 9:34 the guy was starting to talk about the virtual scenography, but he's interrupted by Floor going full operatic. And about Floor's voice: here and there it isn't perfectly the same in the echo, there are some longer or higher or differently modulated notes.
In another spot one of the girl plays an air guitar mimicking Emppu who isn't on screen in the Wacken video or starts "windmilling" when Floor is not in the frame... and so on...
I think they were talking about audiences in general, or the audience at home, but I may be wrong... Strange reaction video for sure!

Floor among being a world class singer is also a Vocal Coach. I've listened to her sing Opera, sing in German and Spanish and sing Pop and Metal songs and watched about 8 or so Vocal Coaches break down her singing and not one mentioned her being "pitchy." Maybe you should get some decent audio equipment and some decent headphones and listen to her again.

About the self-confidence to be a great singer. When she was called by the Nightwish to start a journey with them she was having a severe depression and she didn't work for a year. She was 50%, and she had to learn the setlist in 48 hours and then perform in public, plus the only way to prove her was her own Walkman. She thinks about performing in those conditions, but she knew that she was her train of hers, if she was afraid she wouldn't be there
I usually love your reactions, but there was definitely something weird going on here. You had two versions running on the sound track. I hope as you were watching, it was only one I hope you get a chance to review more of their work without the technical glitches.
When this was recorded Floor had been the replacement singer of Nightwish för just about 10 months. She did her first show in Seattle Wa on Oct 1st 2012 after the band fired Anette, their second singer. This was recorded Aug.3rd 2013. She became a full time member later in 2013.
This was a live concert with over 82,000 fans in Germany not a virtual concert but they have a virtual concert on UA-cam. In this video she is 6 foot 5 inches with the 4 inch heels. Ghost Love Score official live from the same concert will show you more of what she can do.

Well she was singing around 10 months in this band at this time , but there are much more people who can you tell everything about this band by far better as I , all I can say I’m glad I discovered Nightwish a year ago , for me it’s the best musical experience I have in a long time, and I’m gone see them in November (Amsterdam) December (Hamburg) and Floor Jansen solo in September close to the village I live and I can’t almost wait for it
It sounded like you had different version of Storytime covering the Wacken version🤔 It's pretty irritating I must say, especially when the Wacken version is probably the best one out there...
Also about Floor's diction: she's praised for her diction by many vocal coaches. She's also classically trained (and a vocal coach herself) which really sounds in her really good diction most of the time, so your point was pretty interesting (not being sure if she sings in english or finnish) considering those things.
Great reaction though and I love how you really go into the technical things of singing! Hope you continue this Nightwish journey, because you as a vocal coach for sure will enjoy the live performances of Nightwish as Floor often does some crazy stuff with her vocals. She does basically anything between growls and operatic singing and often uses different singing styles during one song.
For the next Nightwish song I recommend Ghost Love Score live at Wacken 2013, to hear more of her vocal abilities.

I thought I would tell you about Floors background so that you can really appreciate her performance on stage.
About two years before this was shot she was burnt out and really depressed. She has been performing in two other bands before Nightwish and when the last one broke up she basically quit performing and worked a bit as a vocal coach.
But in 2012, during their world tour Nightwish and their second singer Anette had a real bad breakup. They where left witout a singer and did a copule of shows with the basist as lead singer and they also loaned in singers from other bands.
Then they called Floor and she said yes and she flew over to USA and had 48 hours to learn the playlist.
This show you just watched is from the same world tour and all of this That I’ve juat told you happened not even a year before.
It’s astonishing how a person can go from broken to a meta godess on fire in such a short time.
I really hope you do more Nightwish and if you do I suggest you do Ghost Love Score next. It’s one of the bands absolute best songs and from a vocalist standpoint it’s a must hear.
The original singer, Tarja, was a trained opera singer from Finland. This is Floor from the Netherlands, and she's also awesome.
At the point in time of the concert, Floor was 32 years old and had been singing in a metal band for half her life. She started with "After Forever" at age 16 as a background singer. The band immediately promoted her to the lead singer because of her voice back then. So at this point in her career (2013) she'd been singing for 16 years. She has three years of the Dutch Rock Academy, one year of opera and one year of music theater training. She has been a vocal coach also. She has some great solo work from just this year. She did that while the band took a year break. Now she's back with the band. This concert, the 2013 Wachen Open Air to me is the best concert of a live band EVER. Outstanding performances by every member and great audio.

Hello, I'm a Nightwish fan, want to offer a few thoughts. 1) Floor is actually Dutch, but the rest of the band is from Finland. 2) She was a replacement singer on this tour, and wasn't officially announced as their permanent singer after this concert. 3) I don't think Floor's pitch is off, if so you're the first reactor to notice it. (she's also a vocal teacher herself) 4) This isn't a virtual concert, the crowd size was 82,000.
My recommendations for more: Ghost Love Score, live at same concert - Wacken 2013. Also from this concert: Ever Dream, Dark Chest of Wonders, and Romanticide.

The audio was strange on this one. You make reference to the virtual concert (because of the pandemic) but the video was from Wacken 2013. I think you edited in the wrong video for the overlay but had audio from both playing together but slightly out of sync causing an echo.
On the other hand it shows how good the band are if playing 2 audio tracks from different concerts many years apart and they are perfectly in time (if they were completely in sync with no echo)
There was definitely something off with the audio. I stopped watching because of it.

Tonight you will perform for the first Time on Home Ground Europe, big Festival, with youre 5 super dedicated hardhitter Pro Musicians in front of 72k Metalheads, just did your Windmill, step forward to the mic, belt out an high D with perfect intonation in the Lyrics, then, without inhaling thx to your superior breathcontrol and years of Training your Vocal Chords and Pallet, fall back in Chestvoice, telling the Crowd that you are every Memory that they hold dear... and some Years later you see some young Lady listen to this Performance, or perhaps an other, who knows, you hear both cruel oversampled, on an crappy apple onboard soundsystem with this somewhat Laptopspeakers( spare me, they are testet crap against every 20 bucks sharkoon USB DAC and some medium Headphones or Speakers)...and she did just perfectly did hear...your somehow pitchy.

The sound😩
Loving your energy and enthusiasm, and a warm welcome to the wonderful world of Nightwish, but not quite sure what's going on with the sound here, sounds like there is either 2 tracks playing and they are out of sync or your mics are somehow picking up the sound output from your laptop speakers and there is a slight delay on it. Really obvious at the breakdown when Floor's voice trails off and you can still hear a second copy going a couple of second later, and also when Jukka's drums kick in its just a much of sound as the two tracks overlap.
I think that I’m not the only one who’s hearing Floor’s voice doubled? Definitely should look for Gabriel’s list, there you’ll find the correct videos and hopefully will enjoy completely this magnificent band.

At the beginning of the video he said they were going to see a clip from the 2021 virtual concert, so I think they overlapped the Wacken video and that's why we hear all that echoes... 🤷

If all you are listening to is laptop speakers, you're only getting about half the total sound quality. So to do justice to the material you really need headphones or pipe it through a quality audio setup. Not just for Nightwish, but any music you want to review.
There is no other band like this one. Period.

This is their last stop from their 18 month Imaginareum World tour. This show had 82K+ in attendance. You mention confidence. This tour started in 2012 with their second lead singer Anette. But, about 10 months in Anette had to drop out. Tuomas "Keyboard player, Song writer/arranger" knew of Floor and called. Her current band was inactive at the time, so she flew out and caught up with them on the road 72 hours before their next tour performance in Seattle. Yea, there is a documentary video out on UA-cam called "Learn the Set List in 72 hours". So, at this show she had been with them on this tour about 8 months. Nightwish is very much a live experience. But with about a hundred different songs out on UA-cam in an Official Live video format, the songs you could react to live are about limitless... every song at this show alone is outstanding. Welcome to the Nightwish Army, kick back and enjoy.

Bad news guys....this was not the virtual concert...this was live at Waken 2013.....she had been with the band only 10 months at this time. The virtual concert was 2021

Floor has the greatest stage presence of any singer I have ever seen in my life. I saw them recently and I was stunned, and this was going in knowing what to expect, too. She engages with the audience, and if she asks you to cheer or clap, you do. She's spellbinding on stage. Greatest show I have ever seen and it was in a little venue and not like this. She's also one of the greatest active signers there is. What she can do with her voice, how she can flip between styles instantly, her range. She's doing this song after song live, too. The rest of the band is amazing, too. You mentioned the amazing arrangement - that's Tuomos on keyboards. And that classical, operatic part in the middle? You've seen nothing yet lol (although this is one of my favorites of theirs). I hope you react to more Nightwish. Try Everdream, from Wacken 2013 (this same show). Looking forward to it!

Some technical issues recording the audio directly and through the speakers and mic... Only solution is to use headset, or mute the mic and to pause music while talking. Or to learn OBS or something similar to record videos.
And everyone knows Santa Claus is from Korvatunturi, Finland. He's even more essential Finnish thing than moomins.
I guess when listening through laptop speakers even the best of the best singer sounds pitchy...
The Netherlands has given four Metal goddesses to this world! It started with Anneke van Giersbergen from The Gathering and she was a source of inspiration for Floor Jansen but also for Simone Simons from Epica and Sharon ten Adel from Within Temptation! All a pleasure to listen to but also to watch!
I would definitely check out the other ladies too! Simone Simons is even a good friend of Floor and there are 2 fantastic duets of these ladies on UA-cam!

There is Storytime performance in Virtual World from 2021, but this isn't it. This is from 2013 in front of 82 000 people.
Hearing this song without headphones is a disservice to yourself because Nightwish has one of the best metal composers. Their performance Ghost Love Score from 2013 in Wacken is a masterpiece.
Something went wrong with the sound, echo is too distracting.
Try hearing this with headphones because her pitch and diction are suberb. She is considered one of most versatile and technical female singers in the world.
Love that you reacted to this one, but 'ghost's love score' is posibly their best showcase of their lead singer. It's like operatic metal.
The band is Finnish but Floor Jansen is Dutch and can speak several languages. She is a trained singer and vocal coach. Please don't mention Evanescence with Amy Lee in the same breath as Floor and Nightwish. In this concert she is singing 15 songs written for the previous two singers, one operatic and one pop. this was written for the pop singer. By the way thank goodness I wasn't trying to judge this performance on your crappy sound quality which had an echo as we were getting a second delayed version. I'm guessing that you were listening on speakers. and your mike was picking up the music and creating the echo. Most reactors use headphones to prevent this issue. The original version relies on prerecorded opera singers as previous singer couldn't do it. By the way many very talented vocal coaches rate Floor as the best example of perfect pitch, empathy, and breath control. She regularly holds notes for over 15 secs. She has her own UA-cam channel with various covers that she recorded at home in Sweden during lockdown plus vocal tips etc.
Arrangement is pretty close. The opera part was originally done by backing choir only because the lady they had at the time, Anette Olzen, while a wonderful singer, was more of a pop/folk type. They actually left several Tarja songs behind for a while because they are really operatic in nature. Floor does a fantastic job on them, and I feel she helped stuff like Romanticide and Ever Dream a lot. and yeah I hear the tinny ness like we are hearing 2 performances. Not sure how to fix it, but at least ya know. Thanks much :)
The least you could do is Google Nightwish, do a little info search. You haven't listened to anything, so don't panic. At least you won't sound so inept, and you will have a better video. Also it helps to start out from the beginning of the song.

First, I doubt if Grace knows much about singing let alone pitch. She'll never succeed in the singing world. That aside, this isn't the 2021 Virtual Concert. This video is from the Wacken festival in 2013. There are in fact 82,000 people in attendance. Great reaction as always. Thanks.
If Floor sounds pitchy to you, your pitch is off! Floor's pitch has been measured by Fil of 'Wings of Pegasus' and Floor has as perfect a pitch as you can get.
