James Nestor could easily be in the running for the real "Most Interesting Man in the World". Aside from his staples of writing and surfing near his home in San Francisco, James can be found freediving for abalone or flying to some exotic land to research ancient traditions of getting high.
James is also interested in efficient and cheap options for transportation. He converted his '77 Mercedes 300D to run on waste vegetable oil, which he gets for free from local restaurants around his home in San Francisco.
In this episode of D-I-Why Not?, Mr. Nestor shows us basics behind his setup which allows him to drive for free.

Aww i need help doing this, I'm a full time college student and I drive a total of 40 miles each day. I don't work and I feel bad asking my parents for money. Can you please make a video on how to convert your diesel car to veggie oil. I have a 83 300D turbo diesel. Do you think a Mercedes specialist would be able to do it? I don't want to spend alot of money on it, I rather do it myself:)
You dont need to change much, unless you live in a cold environment. All you have to do is call your local restaurant, which might pay you to get the oil off their hands anyway, and filter all the nasty stuff out of it. Put it in the tank, and you are golden. If you live in a colder environment, you may have to add a block heater to your engine.
so true, the big auto industries have the technology, but creating a product that is sustainable goes against their business plan, ....planned obsolescence , they need the vehicles to break down so that you have to buy parts that are made from finite resources
nice project and i really like that mercedes but you left out one thing. it's not just filtration and then run you need to separate the water. used vegetable oil often has alot of water in it from the frozen food that is being fried in the oil.
great videos by the way, keep it up!
ok how i do start, what do i need, step by step? probably never gonna get the answer… :/
