There's pure comic genuis in this recording! Clean humor which is sorely needed at this current time. Gotta love Doodles Weaver and Spike Jones and His City Slickers.
Not only is Doodles hilarious on the record, he is also just as funny on this film. Did everyone know he is also brother to the president of CBS but also uncle of Sigourney Weaver? I’ve loved Beatlebomb since I was a 4 yr old and I can’t say how extremely talented he is. Virginia Whedon
Doodles' real name was Winstead Weaver, which is used in the intro to his "Man on the Flying Trapeze". "Are you in voice, Winstead?" Another fun fact: he was the uncle of Sigourney Weaver. (Real name: SUSAN!) Edit: I see this comment in many other places!
Doodles Weaver had actually been fired by Spike Jones from the City Slickers by the late '40s because of his alcoholism. So it's great that, at least for this moment (long enough to see Weaver perform on TV!), they had a reconciliation. Weaver had tried his hand at doing solo work on early TV, but just couldn't break through. I'm glad this footage exists.
There's a (very) similar story regularly played on the radio by the ABC in the leadup to the Melbourne Cup. It's a flea race, and there are regular show thumpings (by the sound of it) of shoe on table when the wrong flea takes the lead.
This post made me do a spit-take on my keyboard! I grew up in the 70s listening to Spike Jones and His City Slickers, but it's been so long since I've heard that one.
Chills. . . did NOT know that! Went Googling and discovered that his full name is Winstead Sheffield Glenndenning Dixon "Doodles" Weaver. "Doodles" was short for "Doodlebug," a nickname given to him by his mother because of his bit eyes and ears. Thanks for piquing my interest!
Here's the excerpt from Wikipedia: "Weaver was married four times, with all his marriages ending in divorce. He had two sons from his last marriage to actress Reita Green. Despondent over poor health, Weaver fatally shot himself in January 1983."
Not as funny as "Feitlebaum", which is actually the punch line to this routine. Weaver was a very funny and troubled person who is mostly forgotten today.
My aunt had this bit on a 78 rpm record! I listened to it over and over again at her house -- what a great memory! 😂❤
That was my dad's favorite skit. Beetle Bomb was his favorite phrase to say.
My Dad called me that too! Took me several years to know where he got it from!
🤔🤣👍

When I was a little kid, I'd listen to my dad's 78 of this bit. Both of us had it memorized!
Myself as well - mid 70s from the later 33 album. Great stuff.

@@garymorris1856 Glad you caught that part about suspenders!
I never could quite understand it when he said that part! Thanks!

@@HogRebel Thank you

Doodles quit Spike in 1951 because he got his own TV show. As you mentioned, it didn't last!
CLEAN humor - love it!
I never thought George W. was so talented.
@@ALLANE1952 Man, it DOES look him, at least in this photo, don’t it’s?!!

Ages ago myh folks saw Spike and the band (and Doodles!) in Kansas City when they were dating!
@@TheMikester307 I was BORN in Kansas City! On the Missouri side. 😎👍
There's a slightly longer version with a cross-eyed driver who narrowly avoids a head-on collision with himself.

also, Sigourney Weaver's uncle, IIRC
a. k. a. Susan!
BEETLEBOOOOOOOMB
How many times did he have to rehearse this?!?!
Look for his version of Eleanor Rigby-my fave Beatles cover.
Sort of a precursor to Robin Williams?
It's kind of ironic that you said that because doodles weaver also committed suicide.

Obviously, we were having a meeting of the minds on Wikipedia.
Sigourney Weaver's uncle !

Doodles was good friends with Don Dokken.

He was closing Dinkler's Hardware Store in downtown Santa Rosina when the Crumps came up, looking to get a pick and shovel.
He was Sigourney Weaver's uncle.
