  • How would I learn bass guitar if I started over?
5 Things I Wish I Knew As A Beginner Bassist... • 5 WORST Mistakes Begin...
Why would I want to start over?
Before I can answer that, it's worth asking why I'm even making this video.
Why am I? I see a lot of regret amongst my students who feel their lives would've worked out differently if they'd only worked harder at the bass when they were younger.
    And I'm no different.
So, knowing that things could've been totally different had I just worked harder shows why I'd want to start over.
But it's not like I can go back. And this is a depressing thought.
It makes a lot of bass players (myself included) feel that their best days are behind them and that it's all down here from now.
This idea that the best days are behind you is only bolstered when people say "the best time to learn is when you're young".
So if you can't go back and change your younger self, and if the common wisdom is true that you can't learn when you're older, why do we get upset about this?
It turns out that wanting to change what you did when you were younger actually means you value your current self more than your younger self.
This is an empowering thought. It means that you could still improve your playing now and not look back 20 years from now with all the regrets that fill you up at the moment.
Forget how to learn bass if you started over, what will you start doing differently now?
Here's my list to give you some ideas.
    1. I wouldn't learn on my own
Whilst I did have a teacher growing up, I put a lot of importance on being a self taught bass guitar player. This meant I would avoid or ignore my teacher's advice just because he was my teacher.
Not because of the quality of his advice.
    2. I'd learn to sing what I play
I discovered I loved to improvise but my ear was too bad to hear all the different scales and arpeggios I wanted to use. My fingers, rather than my ear, would lead my improvisations and they'd just end up sounding like a collection of notes rather than music.
If I could sing first then I could truly use my ears to guide me.
    3. Focus on process and feedback more
Like a lot of beginners, I was totally fixated on results. I had to be able to play thing song or that lick and this tunnel vision came at the cost of my improvement. I didn't put in the yards to develop a good work ethic and learn to take failure as a type of feedback that could show me what I was doing wrong and how to improve.
    4. I'd learn theory from day one
This is a no-brainer. I couldn't read music growing up and I knew nothing about theory which cost me dearly when I got more serious about the bass.
    5. I'd make my practice more creative
I grew up thinking of practice as something really rigid. I'd have to play these exercises for a certain amount of time or those scales in this position of the fretboard. However, if I had realised that learning songs is also a great way to practice then I could've been much more creative in how I learned and would've progressed much more quickly.

The singing tip is a silver bullet for learning. Such a great learning tool and you don't need to be a great singer for it to work for you.

Good to see you're still there, man. Life choices have got me distant from my bass playing, time to prepare a comeback. And quite an interesting suggestion of yours. I've never thought how singing would help, maybe I'll restart with that.

I am "self taught" Although I consider myself an anomaly. I had a few mentors early on though, they really helped me understand. So nobody really learns on their own. Although I did teach myself to read music by 14 years old. I was OBSESSED. Still am. Great video!! I appreciate what you are doing!

I just wish i got an earlier start....I wanted to play an instrument my entire life, but due to various factors it was always out of reach. I bought my first bass at 18 with my second paycheck taught myself to play, its been 14 years since and I'm already at the first step, I really want a personal teacher.
