    #11 - learn a little theory every week example: learn what notes are used in major chord and minor chords - they will give a road map for which notes you can play besides the root note. Learn one chord every week.

      Unless you are going into a genre that requires the knowledge of the circle of fifths and all that bs, theory is useless, and there are a lot, and I mean a LOT of professional grammy winning musicians who will agree. The days of analog, tubes, and two note back-up are over, grandpa.

    I love your attitude to beginners learning an instrument. So many people are put off by having to learn boring but easy songs (O When the Saints and Beethovens Minuet) and being told to practice "as slow as you need, so you don't make mistakes".
    Your tips, "play what you love" and "simplify what you play" are perfect for beginners, and it moves those beginners into intermediates way more quickly than having to trudge through the boring stuff at a snails pace. It is so much more effective to learn by playing a dead simple bass line to your favourite song (at real speed).

  • @MichaelStoneham
    @MichaelStoneham 3 роки тому +27

    1. Tuners: Some tuners may not tune down to the Lord B of a 5 string. Also its best to use chromatic mode in the tuner
    2. Picks: the big pick you showed work were also stubby picks are great bass picks.
    3. Amp: you can also get headphone amps like the vox amplug.
    4. Nails: while I thi k short ones is best. Nore flamenco guitar players use long fingernails on the strumming hand. And Do,,y parting had long nails on her chord hand she made a career playing guitar.
    I myself played guitar. I began playing bass when the bass player at church took a few months off when he got married. I borrowed one of his basses and started around 8-10 years ago.

    The last tip ist absolutely wrong to me... In my opionion, don't slide up and down the neck if not really necessary! Keep your movements as small as possible and learn your muting! Muting ist way more important than the actual playing imo. Sliding up and down and up the neck again my look more interesting and rockin' on stage than just playing in maybe the same fret but on another string, but you will soon experience bad fretted notes, an exhausted fretting hand/arm and ringing strings as soon as you play on another if you don't have a good muting technique. And you'll have to be REALLY fast at sliding as soon as the tempo increases.

    Keeping your bass within easy reach is number one on my list. I play multiple musical instruments and it's always the ones in view, within arms reach, that get the most attention. My advice; put your bass on a guitar stand right next to where you normally spend most of your time. And leave it plugged into your amp, amp's power switch also within easy reach, everything ready to go. Reaching for it will then become a relaxed second nature response, rather then a time consuming deliberate physical task. And this will effortlessly increase the time you spend with your bass, helping you progress as a musician.

    • @cosmicpanda7043
      @cosmicpanda7043 Рік тому +2

      Completely agree, but if you have an active bass don't ever leave it plugged in unless you wanna be constantly buying new 9v batteries. Active electronics engage when you're plugged in even if the amp is off

    Some criticisms and tips for bass learners
    1 - You should strive to develop your "learning by ear" skills, even if you find tabs easier, because there may not always be tabs, and those tabs may be wrong.
    3 - Play songs you love, have fun, but I wouldn't completely ignore the technical and boring side of playing bass - It's important to find a balance. I can see she has some technical issues herself unfortunately.
    4 - Usually it's recommended to start learning with fingers because it is more versatile. Also, don't limit yourself to only one - get good at both.
    7 - This is a really good tip, it's a great idea
    8 - I don't think you should simplify songs, but instead slow the complicated bits down a lot, and work on them slowly and patiently. It might be more boring and frustrating than just simplifying songs, but results require hard work
    Things you might be doing wrong section:
    - Hold down the strings as lightly as physically possible to produce a clean sound. There is no need to push down hard on the strings, and it doesn't take that much to produce a nice sound. Experiment with this but slowly pressing down the string (with your finger close to the fret bar like she shows) and stop when it sounds clean. You might be surprised at how little force it takes.
    - About the fingertips: It can be acceptable to use your finger pads - For example, when using your index finger to mute the strings that are higher than the one you are playing by laying your finger across the strings. Or with your pinky for example if it naturally tries to lay flat when stretching out.
    Also I forgot where she said it, but the advice to buy an amp is correct and very important. This is because if you play without one, it will create a bad habit where you pluck the strings much harder than you need to just to be able to hear yourself.
    And finally, hands in most cases are not too small for stretching to play 4 frets. Your hand/fingers just need time and practice to stretch out.

    Awesome information and array of opinions and strategies. I just got a bass guitar and staring at it as I am intimidated. I just opened a book "The complete idiot's guide" playing bass guitar and wow!!!!!!! So the journey begins and I have no clues of how to play but this is what I want to do and I have a fire inside to complete a dream of mine and would like any support and strategies for success.

    Hey thanks. I have a bass. Ive been encouraged by friends to pick it up, "cuz im a natural". Lol. I do love it, but still somewhat intimidated by it. Just the like guitar over there staring at me. I dont play it so i dont end up hating it. I paint mostly. But none the less. I think ur video was totally helpful. Thanks for being able to relate and re-source. Cheers high 5. :)

    great video. The part about holding the strings down harder depends on the bass set up to an extent. i picked up a bass a couple weeks ago and had issues with my fingers getting torn up from how hard i was having to fret the strings combined with constant sliding because my action was way to high. Upon setting the action to a more reasonable standard my fingers felt much better and i can hit frets faster with out herculean strength.

    First step - make sure you have passion for music and not do it to look cool for your friends. Also, you can use any pick on bass, it's all about comfort. I use a soft guitar pic ( mainly use fingers) on bass those big ones suggested here I find uncomfortable and hang up.. I have been playing bass since 1992 myself. These are some great tips but it's mostly suggestive. Just love bass and have fun...that's it!

    This is great as a first step. I then took the advantage of getting lessons. The level of skill for me progressed exponentially due to having lessons and learning theory. I'm self taught for a number of instruments but never really progressed without the theory. Bass is awesome!!!

    • @BillyWillows
      @BillyWillows  3 роки тому +4

      Theory just clicks for some people, and others just never get it. I love music theory and my little logical brain likes knowing a little bit about keys and modes. But many of my very talented friends know nothing of theory, they learn better with their hands than their minds I guess! Keep playing Kimberley xxx
