Lionel, you inspired me to do my first sprint distance tri in June 2019. I trained from Jan-June and felt ready. However I did not train open water. Long story short, the swim ate me up (hypervent, panic, etc). I literally was the last person out of the water. I finished the race but felt defeated. I haven’t trained since. I’ve gained 20 l lbs. I follow you closely, and felt terrible for you about your Kona result. But, I want to have a re-birth and achieve what I know I can achieve. With this video, you have once again inspired me. Tomorrow the training starts. Thanks Lionel. Always know the motivation you provide to regular Joes like me!
@Shane B. Having been through similar open water swim issues...you can check out the Tower 26 channel they have a lot of advice and programs for overcoming open water start issues. My advice. Just go swim in the pool, even if it’s just 100m.....but never quit.
Hey Shane, noooo...you sounded really motivated to do your first sprint and that you enjoyed the training...a lot of people are scared of the open water...i was too when i started, but its something i know you can overcome! Dont give up! Take it slowly in open water and youll buikd up confidence. You can do it!!!!
Tip: While your working on your conditioning in the pool, put on your suit and goggles and head out to your nearest open body of water, not to swim but simply just float around, even if it's just 5 mins the first time. Get your face wet, get used to looking into open water, doggie paddle around. Just get comfortable in it. Graduate into a few strokes. stick with it and in no time, you will be knocking out a 2000M training swim.
I'm so happy to have you finally jumping over your shadow and realizing that you need a trainer! So now you can concentrate on what you can do best: train. Looking forward to great progress and amazing performances in 2020 :-)
Lionel, I really hope you commit this time around and don't let this be another UA-cam video you "wished you had rewatched". You're too talented to let your stubbornness win.
@Lionel Sanders. I watched Cam Wurf interview on Tower 26. He has a wealth of swim bike and run coaches, advisors and sponsors working on all aspects of his training and nutrition. This model is working well for him and I feel you are much more able to continuing winning in this sport. You don’t have to lose your freedoms by working with others. We love you man and love seeing you win. Keep going and learning. I just had a nutrition breakdown in training yesterday which has bummed me out and I know that feeling of being an idiot. Thanks for helping us all through your videos. I learn more from them then most training videos out there (and I know these aren’t training videos).
Hi Lionel , you've got the potential. Have a good off season, reset your mind, trust your coach and be patient and you will be on the podium again for sure. There are a lot of konas ahead watching you racing !
YES!!!!!!!! Hopefully, this teaches you once and for all that you need a coach and a team around you. It will allow you to do the work and not worry about whether it's too little, too much, etc. Have a great race in Cabo!
Lionel is like many triathletes and myself. We have addictive personalities and we over think everything! If we start something we go full throttle or not at all. Constantly looking at numbers, stats and everything tech related. Also like to train alone and self coach. We have no problems with motivation to train if anything we have problems over training. Addiction to whatever it is we have set our minds on. Learning from mistakes but than repeating them. Love ya Lionel I can relate to you!
Thank you for sharing your journey! Love your work ethic, drive and sincerity! You are fearless and motivate a ton of people! Encourage you to keep looking forward! Go get 'em Lionel!
Great video.Sometimes,we fail on the most simple things.Things like resting, hydration, carbs, etc are for an pro or amateur athlete PRETY OBVIOUS but if you mess with them, performance suffers a lot THINGS THAT ARE EASY TO DO ARE ALSO EASY TO NOT DO
aren't you tired of listening to this over and over???? it's like watching groundhog day on repeat. my beginner long course athletes have better nutrition plans! there was nothing else for him to focus on...bike fit was taken care of, sponsors taken care of, equipment taken care of 🤦🏻♂️
Yes yes yes! Happy for that Lionel! A coaches job is just that...to cross the T’s and dot the i’s and let you focus on the training alone. Looking forward to the year and following the journey.
This has to be one of the best outcomes of this journey. It is great to hear, that a coach is in the offing. There is now reason for Kienle and Frodeno to pay attention.
Lionel, good to hear you're going to be working with DTD again to help "organize the pieces". It's a fascinating journey you're on and thanks as always for being so transparent and sharing your thought processes. Good luck and enjoy Los Cabos!
With such a high sweat rate, it would be extremely difficult to excel in ironman distance races held in extreme heat conditions, such as Ironman Kona. Lionel, your second place finish at Kona in 2017 was extraordinary and I was lucky enough to witness it in person. I believe that when racing ironman distance races, you should first concentrate on cold weather races and, possibly, then move towards warmer races, which could culminate in racing Kona again. You are an immense source of inspiration and I wish you absolute success in all your endeavours.
@@487porkchopLionel has observed he has done better in cold races. He's not trying to be clever, it's common knowledge racing cold is easier. Don't be a smart ass
You are an inspiration to me Lionel, but it feels like watching the kona 18 recap video all over again. Really hope you don’t drift away the next season. 👍🏻
6 months from now....”I can do this on my own...”. Lionel is an amazing athlete but he is letting his emotions control him. He needs to control the emotion and be robotic about this and then use the emotions for those small moments in races where you need it.
I'll just drink when I get thirsty....that's a bad game plan even if you are just a regular person walking around doing nothing. Glad he's getting a coach looking forward to the results.
This next season will be the first for me to have a coach and I’ve been hesitant but hearing you say that really helps with the decision to better myself and my ability. Excited to see what the new season brings.
Just the fact that you've shared so honestly makes you a hero for so many of us. Two things (even if you are not gonna read this :)) - One, stick to David for more than a year. Two, go to Roth to test yourself in the heat against tough competition.
Good decision Lionel. Pl stick to this plan and we’d like to see you on top of the podium in Kona next year! And we have a new course record and a new Ironman world champion Lionel Sanders! Can’t wait
Lionel is the most self critique athlete I ever seen!!!! Hope he can find good help and learn something!! Not getting any younger!! love the videos BTW.
His mouth is saying: "I will listen to my coach". His mind is thinking: "No way. I know what's best for me!" He keeps repeating the same thing over and over again: "A loss is a humbling experience and I will learn from this". And then he doesn't. Lionel is blessed with so much talent. But his ego is even bigger. And that's why he will probably never win Kona. But I'll be happy for him if he proves me wrong.
Also consider occasional swim and running partner. They will help you get to higher level. Consider also having somebody to watch & correct your swimming ang running tehnique to save some energy during IM races. 💪
I applaud your stick-to-it-iveness. And that's especially important now for keeping a coach. Say Hi to Sammy Hagar at the Cabo Wabo Cantina while you're in Los Cabos.
Christopher good, he has a lot of coaching experience and I am always learning something from him. Many people didn’t like what he said about Lionel because they see it as personal which they shouldn’t because it is really for Lionel benefit. For some reason, I am not getting the notifications on my youtube comments.. cheers
Disappointed to learn you don’t read comments but that’s probably smart. So excited that you’re building a team. Others have them but I doubt they can match your will to win. Victories are in your future-it’ll be an amazing journal. Hopefully you get the physiological data along the way. That data will tell you what you can’t necessarily perceive yourself, no matter how well you know yourself.
Training is a full time job, be a coach is also a full time job. So if you are training and coaching yourself you are doing 2 full time jobs, of course you are going to achieve a lot more just focusing on training !! so good luck i hope the best for your results with this new approach
The comments on these last 3 videos of yours prove that people love playing pretend and acting like they are out there getting it. You're a very aware guy, sure this is a big realization and step for you so congrats! Been inspiring to watch your journey, stay frosty my friend!
Lionel you are such a huge inspiration to me, thank you for posting these amazing videos. I have to say, nice camera, too tho :D Can you name the camera you are using?
great man!! A pro like yourself needs a second perspective and a work team so im very happy for you, im sure your results will be amazing because it's true, the human brain can't be aware of all the important factors, specially in this sport where body and brain are taken to the limit, i cant wait to seh your work and results with the good advice and strategy that you are going to recieve.
Finally! Control your beast and get the shit done. Hard to see what you are capable of doing but you struggle to deliver. You need somebody who challenge you on the way there so you can focus on delivering.
Being a Lionel fan is so frustrating. I think he feels like we do about him , but X 100 towards himself. I think he'll finally get it right and win Kona at some point.
My first coach said to me “You’re going to have to do it on your own but you can’t do it alone.”
pro trick : watch movies on kaldroStream. I've been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Alden Zachariah yup, been using Kaldrostream for since december myself :)
I’m so glad he is sharing this journey with the world. It’s so inspiring.
Hey Talbot, any chance you could interview Lionel's coach?
Jon Fischer yes. That would be amazing insight
He doesn’t have one
you meant his wife?
Zack Wilson did you even watch the video? Ffs.
He said David.
Good news! Concentrate on the training, and let him plan for you

He ain't humble either... thinks he doesn't need a coach....
"I did this.. this my project, which us me .. me me me.. " that's all I hear... guy needs a mental coach first...

@Sebastian Tri. Your name is Sebastian. I think your father needed a male coach first.
I keep my fingers crossed! Keep on pushing an accept the help on your way to greatness.
Lionel, this time ‘just do it’ man! For your and all our sake. Good luck.
Yes yes yes! Happy for that Lionel! A coaches job is just that...to cross the T’s and dot the i’s and let you focus on the training alone. Looking forward to the year and following the journey.

You are the most inspiring guy in triathlon. You fall but you are keep going.

So proud of you for making this change. Can't wait to see what you accomplish in a year after fully trusting your coach.

Best move you can make Lionel ! :) just execute the training plan, learn and bounce ideas off the coach and you'll smash them !

Good decision, it is nice to see you happy! Tha's key! Be happy, enjoy, smile.......! Please stay healthy!
Love the videos. Lional has been great inspiration in influencing me to run my first marathon at age 40 and to vlog about it. Keep up the content!
Awesome self awareness Lionel, the Tri world needs to look out now, he's about to be passing you. ON YOUR LEFT!!
Great vlog man. Great showing of a human perspective on being an athlete in general. Great to hear in getting a coach!
