Jeff I finally punched the tag on the old 8+ year old I've been chasing for four years now. I've commented several times about my encounters with him and even missing him. Thank you so much for all the wisdom you've given me there's no doubt you helped me tag this giant West Virginia Monarch in my photo.
Austin, what county in WV are you hunting? Im in process of purchasing a plot in Mineral county to hunt for few years and then retire on later. Looking for pointers on the hunting there. Totally green to Wv hunting. Been hunting north central Md, some western Md ( Greenridge) , and eastern shore of Md for decades. Thinking Mineral county will be a whole different beast.
@ I am in Hardy County, which boarders mineral. My advice is make sure the property you buy has good access from more than one side. The wind in the Appalachians swirls really badly so you really need to learn how to play the thermals and honestly just go out and learn the land and how your white tail use it!
Love the way you explained being in the woods in the winter. Just that sound of silence…Cold and snow is my favorite time to be out there. Just something about it I love.
I almost prefer hunting December in deer over November. Less hunting pressure and deer seem to be highly focused on food making them the most predictable since early September. Thanks for the all the great content Jeff!
Hey jeff as a thumb resident and hunter with small children i wanna thank you for giving me the confidence i needed to tag out on above average michigan whitetails. The second one was big in any state. Moral of the story is 5 sits two tags filled. Making sure i was in the woods on those cold fronts. The biggest thing to me was staying off the farm. I was able to hunt the edges and keep intrusion low..
The rage from my early season failures has subsided. Got a mature buck with my kid in the blind with me, and my wife and dad both got some younger bucks that will look good on the wall and in the freezer. In our 1st full year of everyone at camp following your strategies, we have lowered our feed costs by 90% and had as many opportunities at good bucks as our best season ever. And we still have 2 months of season left. Thanks again for everything you do for us!
I have worked on my hunting property using what I have learned here throughout the last couple of years to make it prime deer property, and I get out of the woods 6 weeks before rifle season to let it calm down. This year for the 2nd year in a row my hunt is over in less than 45 minutes...last week was 15 minutes after I got in the stand. I know its a crazy problem to have, and Im blessed. But I do miss the thrill of sitting for few hours and watching for movement, and finally seeing it.
Jeff my big bick from last yr finally showed up last night in this snow and cold temps, he came in 2 times! Was a relief to see he was still alive, he didn't get any bigger tho, if anything he lost a couple inches and he went from a 9 to a 10 and lost a couple kickers and put a kicker off his base! I have a buddy that said he thought it was him and another said it wasn't, but the rack shape is almost identical so it has to be him. He's around the 50 mark, baf thing is i have an 8 that is 160 and he's getting all my spare time, nice to finally have a couple mature deer to chase cause i didn't 2 weeks ago! You dead on with December, they are hungry and can't stay out of the food! I have not figured them out either cause i found them late. Alot of cold sits ahead!
Here in Oklahoma it's finally deer hunting weather, 20s in the morning and 40s for highs. No snow but finally not 80 degrees. December and early January the bucks are on more of a food pattern and not roaming the country and looking for love. I love the cold for hunting big bucks. We see more bucks chasing second rut the 1st tut. It should be going about 2nd week in December. Great video again 👏
Thanks for everything Jeff. I'm still being too picky I guess. Not really I've been passing on some bucks all season but I know id rather eat a tag then just take something average. Thanks for turning me onto Firstlite also, loving my new gear for cold weather!
Another good one! We had a couple of good bucks on cam and watched them grow from 2022. We got corn in and some clover and the soybean got mowed down. All the bucks were always on a couple of cams constantly……then the dogs moved in…..NOT HAPPY!! After the 3-4-5 day of dogs those big bucks left the area. But I’m still trying.
With the end of the season for deer yesterday in Alberta I'm now gearing up to go and try for mountain lion over December and Jan and then getting back ready for bears in spring.
Great tips. I hope i can tag one this month. My rut in se ohio was lousy. My cell cams are showing some chasing activity so we will c what happens with gun opener tomorrow
Native Minnesotan here, but I didn't get into deer hunting until relocating to Virginia. So you're always advising to hunt food sources after the main rut, to catch bucks trying to recover mass etc. However, for those of us who can't afford private land and food plots, WHAT DO WE LOOK FOR now that acorns are long gone? You should do a video on what food sources might still be found once the leaves have fallen even in southern states like Virginia. Show some close-ups of the browse they might still go after (i.e. aside from harvested farm fields and their leftover crop remnants). When I go onto a military base that allows hunting, where should I go to camp out food?
I don’t think I have ever had a chance at a buck after the second week of gun in November. Usually hunting December is just hoping a doe will show up where I can get something before the year is out.
I was the same way until this season , I found a huge clean scrape late last week and I hung a stand and camera on it and it’s red hot with both bucks and doe on it !
Do you have any videos on hunting big ag country? I'm in Nebraska & it's full of big crop fields, fencelines & small woodlands & creeks. The deer are predictable early season but when the crops are out, they seem really unpredictable...there's literally food everywhere.
Hunt in NC and there seems to be a trickle rut. Anyone with any specific ideas for hunting in December where the entire 100acre area is essentially bedding minus a few open spots for the sun to shine thru? Is it still feasible after the main rut to try to get way back in , say around 330-430am?
You're 54? Um, that's my lawn you're standing on. I'll turn 70 come spring. Tack on little guy hunting alone and ain't no dragging a deer out of the woods. Fortunately, two spots I can get a gator to that are close enough to travel corridors. Pulled cameras yesterday. Both getting some use. Season opens Wed. Been cold but gonna get warm that afternoon. Gonna put some Tink's out tomorrow afternoon that'll hopefully have em searching around. Will check back for comments about that. Still, to me, it comes down to the Lord brings me one or He doesn't. Either way, blessed be the Name of the Lord!!!

Great deer!

It is so amazing... harshly peaceful

In the northeast we call this time of year “you go to them” lots of tracking and still hunting is most of the success out here this late

Great video jeff!! There is something about late season!! So fun!!
It is amazing Brian...can't wait to get home!
It’s magical and wonderfully decompressing from the noise of our working societal world.
I spend HOURS alone in the peace and quiet l
Always great content Jeff. Getting back out Dec 3 Livingston County Mi.
What a great year WHS!
Thanks a lot Kurt, it has been an incredible ride...so many great memories!

Stay warm deff!!!Good luck to everyone this December!!
Been hunting for 10 years… finally Got my first buck with a bow on Black Friday. It was cold… 30 minutes in.
Doin my first muzzleloader hunt this December
That's awesome! Good luck David!
With the end of the season for deer yesterday in Alberta I'm now gearing up to go and try for mountain lion over December and Jan and then getting back ready for bears in spring.
Can't wait for the 2nd rut here in Pa!!

Shot my buck Dec 1 lots of huge bucks left
Wow that is AWESOME!! Congrats I am so happy for you!
Man I wish northern panhandle of WV would get snow.
Instead north of us in PA & Ohio get blasted with feet of snow! and southern WV
We had to drive thru that stuff to get to hunt the PA opener. Man it wasn't fun...but very rewarding!
Remember, Zone 2 in Michigan can be any firearm during muzzleloader season this year
Which. Absolutely. Sucks.
Jeff, any chance you could add chapters coorelating to your numbered topics on your board?

All the warm stuff for the head area sounds good til you ad in a pr.of glasses. They fog up terrible.
ALWAYS
We appreciate you Donald!!
I still don't know why First Lite hasn't sponsored you yet! Lol
😁 Maybe some day, lol
Thanks Jeff
For Public Land, it means less guys out it the woods too. Only the strong survive.
Amen...like a ghost town!
Love your videos, I hunt Rhode Island so I’m curious how ahead or behind are our rut phases from yours?

How does this apply to huntin in Alabama?
Love this time of year! Nothing like sitting over a big food source waiting on your target buck! Especially with cold temperatures
So dang awesome Drew...I hope you have a great December!!
@ you to man
Would rather be out in late October when it's not super windy and the deer aren't scared.
What r u good tips for the U P in December
Jeff, how the hell do we keep the turkeys off the corn? 😊😂
They don't hit it in the stalk too well at all 😉
The classic Owl decoy in a tree next to your pile
Should I hunt on the downwind side of a hub scrape? I live in Michigan about 45 min north of Det. You think second rut is still going?
It’s just starting
