Wow. Same here for Vivoactive 4s after using it for swimming for 1.5 years. In reading the comments, it looks like 1.5-2 years is when things go south if you use it for swimming. I am also a bit wary of replacing it with the same even though I really liked it for the year and a half that it was working.
I had the exact same watch and experience as you. Used my "trusty" Vivoactive on many running events, races, hikes, etc. Took it for its first swim 2 years later (and hence out of warranty) and the watch wouldn't turn on the next day. Called customer service and made my case, because frankly even though serious runners use Garmin, I cannot bring myself to buy another Garmin product that makes false claims on its packaging (in this case, regarding waterproofness). The Garmin rep offered me 30% off the new Vivoactive 3. That restored my confidence in the brand a little. I encourage you and others to do the same. Don't use the online chat service - I believe the chat service is partially maintained by humans and bots given the formulated responses I was getting. Talk to a human at Garmin.
Had the same problem. I had used the Vivoactive HR in the pool previously but last weekend in the pool on vacation it started vibrating and screen went blank. I have had it under 2 years. I specifically bought this one as it was advertised as water proof, I never took it in water over a couple of feet deep. Very disappointed.
mine got damaged yesterday in the same manner while swimming. it says 50' deep water resistance but that's simply not the case. these devices are not waterproof which sadly is false advertisement.

I wore mine in the pool wadding and in 3-4ft pool on vacation and the screen went black. I've had my watch maybe 18mo. I'm so disappointed.
Vivoactive HR has the same problem! Mine is death by greek sea water after 15 min. normal swimming and six months of use :(

Happened to me also. 1 and a half years and watch went blank after swimming. No warranty and $100 to repair... Do not buy this
