That boat has become a full time job and then some, lots of elbow grease. In the end all your work will be like one giant paycheck, “Cha-Ching” especially when you go to sell her. I think its awesome your bringing her back to life.
Billy and Sierra, Been watching you since your trawler days. We've got a 1976, 34 foot CHB trawler in Friday Harbor that I've been bringing back from neglect by the previous owner. Trouble is, I'm 75 now and I get tired just watching you two restore that DeFever! Don't forget to take a date-night someplace fun, even though boat work can be a labor of love!
What a contrast from traveling across the US without a care in the world, to a major overhaul and work from dawn to dusk. It will be worth it and when your done your Cat will be ready.
Best glue remover ever, lighter fluid. Dissolves the glue and evaporates completely. Just wet, wait a sec and wipe off. Any residue comes off with soap and water. I use it to remove price labels from noble woods cuz, as you say, finish won’t stick.
I must admit that I like the snap shots of projects and verbal updates. There is just to much to do for you to take all your time filming and explaining, and for me to watch it all. I love what you are doing and the fact you take us along. I still want to see you cruise up along the Canadian coast and Vancouver Island. Just a dream of mine.
You may are good decision on waiting for the right temperature. One year we were so excited to get back in the water we started getting everything ready like we normally do. I decided to get the bottom paint on that way you would have a week or two to cure before going back into the water. The day I get it that night was in the thirties and the afternoon highs were only in the 40s. I was actually wearing a coat and hat doing it. When I was done I looked back and it did not look right. So I figured just give it a couple days to try since it was cold. It never really looked away it had in past seasons but I figure it was good enough to get through the boating season. Let's just say I was wrong. After about 2 months in the water the kids were out swimming around the boat and underneath and that's when they said that I needed to look at something. There were spots where the paint just washed away and I could see where I had sanded the hall before repainting. So I just made it to say him to finish out that year boating season and that would be a project for The following season. I never did repaint the bottom that's when we decided to move up bigger and just traded the boat in the way it was. Our new broker was telling me what went wrong. He says a lot of people make that mistake and that if I ever wanted to do it again invest in some heat lamps. And that's when my wife chimed in and said there won't be a next time that my husband is retired from painting our boat. As always I enjoyed watching you guys get things done looking forward to your next episode.
I have considerable sympathy for you two. I went through the same thing last Winter when I sold my powerboat and as part of the deal agreed to get the boat ready to launch. That ended up involving painting/varnishing the entire exterior of the boat after replacing 7 planks on the hull. Did I forget to say the boat was an 86 year old woody? Rebuilding the galley with new counters and varnished mahogany trim, building, varnishing and installing a new table in the main salon and painting/varnishing the cabin sole in the entire boat. Oh yeah, I was working in an unheated shed in Maine. The plus side is that the boat is sold and I won't be doing any of that work again.
Welcome to the sailing version of the wonderful world of car shows, garage princesses, trailer queens and venue egos. I salute your incredible attention to detail, all the while being sure and certain that the hull and skin are safe as well as pretty. The interiors, engines and running systems are easy, compared to the exterior prep work; I'm speaking from the experience of six summers, on hands and knees, scraping, sanding, polishing and varnishing the decks and woodwork of my dad's 78' schooner (I learned to hate teak for a few decades!). Great good luck and thank you for sharing!
Keep chipping away guys (har), I might be interested in this fine old boat for a PNW adventure next year exploring the Columbia river, San Juans, and Inside Passage. You have lots of youth and energy, I have less of that these days but more available cash. Keep us posted!
The insight about doing the paint/cosmetic things first is a really good one, and speaks to your maturity and sophistication. I could see some young and headstrong people bucking that idea on "principle," or out of some rebelliousness or class envy, or whatever. You two represent yourselves well and are great teachers by example.
Luv it. Been waiting all week to see your progress. As an older guy I can’t begin to tell you how good it makes me feel to see a young couple that’s not afraid to actually do some manual labor. In todays world it’s a rarity. Very very proud of both of you. It will be a real “ Love Boat “ when your finished. Congratulations. Love seeing your progress. 😎🙋♂️👍
You said it all in the first minute , I got a 50 foot wood ketch ..... on the hard , I have a lot of time to think bout fiberglass ! Lol Labors of love .
Love you guys. The best part, I think, is no matter what your circumstance, you're both willing to put in the work. And it's not fun, maybe satisfying/gratifying, perhaps character building, but you guys put the work in and that is whybI appreciate watching your adventures. Be safe, fingers crossed for good painting weather and give that darn doggie some super hugs.
MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) is a fantastic and effective stripper/clean-up solvent but is hazardous / very hazardous to use. Fumes from MEK are particularly a problem, hence MEK is banned in some places. Good luck you guys.
3-M adhesive remover! Can be purchased at Home depot or Ace Hardware or a local Marine store. And to comment on the Painting of the boat. YES AND YES! Cosmetics for a boat like yours would be a worthy investment and add value to the vessel. Are you going to use a single or two part paint? Hope you plan on primer first! Next question? Are you going to spray or Roll n Tip? In my opinion you are taking the best avenue by addressing all the boatyard concerns while you are on the hard. Don't forget Cutlass bearings, and make sure your props are aligned as well! I am pleased to know you pulled the trigger on purchase, you have a worthy investment there, and as experienced boat owners you have the wherewithall to do this! And surely there are resources in your area to do your task handily. I am going to assume all of your through hulls are bronze and easily serviced, and a good choice to adress the operation of them as well! I am Happy to see you took the plunge. After you go back in the water Surely you should take the time to experience the wonderful places you have to go Cruising . Perhaps you may get to enjoy some places across the border Canada has Excellent places to experience also. Congratulations, Keep Safe, enjoy the boatyard and all that you do on your Journey. And....... whatever you do to the boat should bring you a Good Return on your investment! Regards
Good luck you are going to need it 😁 I spent most of my life over 40 years as a paint and body man I repaired , cars , RVs, boats , and even golf carts .
"Boat-Flippers" - may your passion, commitment, and hard work be greatly rewarded - in more ways than monetarily... a good R.O.I. of your time & talents. Cheers. Like 501.
I would love to see you guys take on a 13 foot Boston Whaler project and rescue one from being salvaged. Such a classic simple boat and would make a great tender for your latest project or a quick flip.
You guys are more of a doers. You plan it you organised it and then you executed it. You are right we just watched it for 30 mins or more but the amount of work and the number of days it took to complete the task is far greater. Thank you very for the video. Looking forward to your next episode. God bless
You guys do a fabulous job of remembering to capture the story on camera as you go. I can't imagine how difficult it is to both try and work on a huge project AND remember to take us along with you via video. Thank you for bringing us with you. Cheers!
They say it's not the destination but the journey that matters. In this case I'd say it's both. You've made so much progress already. I'm really impressed. And, you are saving a beautiful boat! Kudos! 🛥
Good call on the looks. A lot of RV parks have a '10 year' rule to try to keep their clientele 'upscale.' Marinas probably couldn't go quite that far (boats last longer than RVs) but you definitely want to keep all options available.
Make sure you check what's in the walls around the windows. So many of these Taiwan trawlers had anything from great framing and fiberglass work to pieces of pallet wood and chopped up roving. Anyplace you find water damage needs to be inspected behind it to make sure you don't leave problems that pop up later. Don't ask how I know :-)
You two are masters at boat restorations, you had plenty of practice. The hull looked so shiny and I think I should go wash my outside hull really thanks 🙏🏻 JT HOOKED N ROLLING OFFSHORE THANKS R WE REALLY ROLLING YES OFFSHORE
I used to work with painting sport aircraft and I remember we used a silicone remover for sticky stuff. works like a dream. sometimes it requires you leave a rag dampened with the silicone remover on the hard to remove bit and it will eventually lift. Auto body spray shops should have it.
I've always had good luck with mineral spirits to get adhesive off, but it's probably too late for that now. As far as the other stuff goes Goof Off will work pretty good on the type of paints they use on boat but I don't recommend it for anything else, it's got too much lacquer thinner in it which removes most paints except for epoxy and urethanes. That is an amazing transformation! I'm not sure if it was just a sunset reflection off the port-light frames or they are actually made of rose-bronze. If so it will look really nice to maintain them as such and not paint them. They can be shined and coated with a slightly abrasive polish and then coated with wax or a polymer protection to slow oxidation.
Sierra we can change your name to Sandy, ok! I love the passion you guys have for the boat! That’s a lot of work and money and energy you are putting out. I really hope it is worth the price. does build a great looking boat. Looked at a few back in the 90’s , as well as a Choey Lee 66.
just keep swimming, just keep swimming.... you all kno you got this you already seen wat it gunna be in YOUR HEADS ALREADY !:) gunna be such a cool ride watching it manufest !!! :) several small goals leading up to FEWER GRAND GOALS :) just keep swimming
Great job guys, so many marina's in Florida turn away live aboard tenants because their boat is not up to the standards of the marina or they don't carry the proper insurance. I guess this is why you see so many sailboats anchored off shore in the Florida Keys. Plus the high cost of a slip rental will derail anyone without a sizable working budget....
Right out of the gate I’m going to see it and I’m not going to lie or BS you. Thank you so much for taking us back to your roots. I thought you were going to get this new boat and start this adventure and forget about where you come from. Instead, you filled all those voids with everything that made you everything that you’ve become. There’s nothing in the world like watching you restart where you started from. I absolutely love it. It’s a passion. Anyone that just wants to see you on a brand new boat, they just don’t get it. They don’t understand your passion for what you do. And most importantly, they don’t understand the passion you gave all of us to watch you be amazing. I just love it. I absolutely love it. Don’t ever stop. I don’t care how rich you get off of being amazing and absolutely addicting to watch as you transition of boat from a dollar boat to a quarter of $1 million boat. I hope that you love your new boat that you have coming, but please, don’t ever stop doing this. I love it, I can’t stop watching your old videos. To see you doing it again is absolutely priceless. I have no clue why I’m so excited to watch you go back to your roots. That being said, please continue. Because I’m addicted LOL but seriously. I really enjoy watching you to refurbish things that most would throw aside as useless trash. Yep this project, it’s a great one. Not trash. Gold mine! LOL for entertainment value alone I consider this rebuild priceless. Thank you.🤙🏼🍻💯🎯 & 🤩
I know this probably sounds frivolous. But could you please throw in a lot more labor hours have you just doing your thing. It doesn’t sound like anything of significance from your side, but from over here we learn so much from what you post and just sit here and watch for an additional 45 minutes would really be fun. And amazing, and needed, unless that’s it. #EntertainmentValue lol
You guys are going to make that boat soo nice you may consider selling your spot in line with Seawind and ordering the 1260. Then spend the year cruising in the trawler.
That boat has become a full time job and then some, lots of elbow grease. In the end all your work will be like one giant paycheck, “Cha-Ching” especially when you go to sell her. I think its awesome your bringing her back to life.

I don't think anything ever gets the better of Billy.

The trawler project certainly has increased your views. Cruising videos are great but project videos are the best. Best of luck with this rehab!
It's true. DIY stuff is the most inspiring. People sailing and trekking and van-life stuff videos are a dime a dozen.

REMOV works great for breaking adhesive bonds. Follow the directions and wait the prescribed time. It is a time and energy saver.

I'll second the 3M Adhesive Remover and add WD-40 on a rag will do well enough if the 3M Adhesive Remover isn't handy...
IT'S GOING TO BE AMAZING ... BEST TO YOUR DAD BILLY ...HOPE HE SOLD THAT HOUSE BOAT AND GOT HIS NUMBER
