5 years on and still a brilliant review - just the kind of honesty I was after, especially regarding the feel of the semi-weighted keys. So thanks!
ua-cam.com/video/vYnR2JdpX1U/v-deo.html
Thanks for this. You're 100% right. UA-cam needs more no-strings-attached reviews for controllers in general. Not just feature shows.
I'm pleased with this review. I'm also glad that you touched the functions of the 16 pad drum controller.
Thank You!
One of the few reviews of this keyboard I could find!
I’ve been looking for this review, nice review and honest i like it
you told me all I need to know, great feeling keys & pads...this is all I am looking for in a midi controller...Tyvm
good job with the review. I decided to go to store and try it at GC. I liked it and bought VI49 version. Keys feel great.
Hi I need some advice
Do you need to buy a sound pack to use the pad on the v149 or can you just use the pads
ua-cam.com/video/vYnR2JdpX1U/v-deo.html
Just got one today and agree totally. This is going to be my show and studio tool. So I'll need to buy another one in 3 months for touring. This thing is dope..
Honestly videos like these are the best!
Nice review man, exactly what I was looking for! Thank you!
Dude thanks for the review, that was exactly what i needed
I've had my vI49 for a long time and I love it
I just bought the vi25, its awesome. The default velocity curve has best "real piano" feel, but can be much for someone who just wants to play without concentrating on pressure. (a must for real piano)
I'm using it on Logic Pro 10 and working flawless. $180 at guitar center.
Casper Helm for the vi25 it's good for a first midi keyboard? Can't find any reviews on it... but I wanted to place an order for it. Anything I need to know? Like how good are the pads? The piano?
this is a great review, super helpful! thanks for sharing!
great honest video. just bought one, would agree with everything you've said
Thanks for the honest review man, rly appreciate it 🙏🏽👌🏽👍🏽
Thank you for this review man!
Finally an actual honest review.
Thanks
This is what i call useful review, nice work. 👍
Wow so much information in just few minutes this is cool!
Dude, I just want to thank you for this review. I also have that M-Audio KeyStudio49 and looking for a change. You hit home with that dust tho...lol. I've been doing my research on the Alesis VI49 & VI25. Checked it out at GuitarCenter store, to see how it feels & looks in person. But I didn't look at any videos on it yet for some reason. As you said, this is an honest review. It is a real review and doesn't sound too bias. So again thanks for this video. You really helped me with my decision by seeing this in action. I didn't know the D-Pad was that sensitive, which is exactly what I need.
I saw some negative comments on your video review here, but you answer the questions I needed to know. Just in case someone decision they want to bash my comment for praising your video, I am not on my UA-cam page frequently enough to care or see your comments, so don't waste your time (but if you do waste your time...I still don't care).
But yo thanks again!!
thanks for the review, buying one tomorrow for Christmas
Thank you for the video.really helped me decide.
Convinced. Buying. Thanks.
Thank you! I’m about to get one thanks to you! 🤗
also is it posible to set up monitors to play live?
awesome review, sold me on it for my sister's b-day present
This was a very helpful video.
good review. the thing is still going strong in 2020. nice peace of hardware. (i have the 49 key version)
it would be great a review after all of these years
Thanks a lot for an excellent review :)
Is it like the vi25?
great review!
tnx man, saved me from all the dilusions...... I'm ordering one, you got one sub
Thanks for the Review.
Looks great! And for $279.! Love the vintage 5-pin MIDI port :) Great video, too. Thanks!
I was iffy on whether or not I should get this version or just V after getting the V25 and not being impressed with the pads before. Looks like these are better while I was just looking for a keyboard of the proper length. Thanks!
Great review
What do all the buttons under the knobs do? Are they completely customisable in Ableton Live? What kind of useful functions could I map to the buttons other than the launching of clips which I've seen in another video?
I also heard there's a built in arpeggiator when the clock is synced to the DAW. I can't find a demo of this feature anywhere.
very helpful review
Is the rear of the keys difficult to press (because of the short fulcrum) just like the unweighted key of the cheap keyboards?
And are they quick enough for returning the original position if I repeat to press the same key quickly?
I apologize for my poor English and thank you for your helping !
Thanks man, I think I've finally made a decision between the akai mkp249 and this, I think I'll go with this instead. How has it hold up from then until now?
Hello how are you? I would like to know if this keyboard has errors like Alesis V61 when pressing the sequence D # + G # + F
thank you for this! I just bought it after this review!
I bought one yesterday and can not have a sound from the keys. What's program you use?
@@mimirizarry you must have a DAW in order to play the midi controller. I use Ableton. It works perfectly with Alesis.
Where do you use the mid top bottoms for, also how do you assign them to let's say panning in logiv
CAN YOU MAKE THE PADS HIT AT FULL LEVEL VOLUME? (AND TURN OFF SENSITIVITY) SAME QUESTION WITH THE KEYS.. THANKS!
How sturdy is the keyboard ? Especially regarding the pads, when you hit them. Is there some kind of support on the bottom, directly underneath the pads ? Also I would like to know if there is any kind of indication of Proposition 65 warning, that this product contains chemicals that are known to cause cancer ?
If you use a sound interface will that get rid of the lag between pressing the key and hearing it?
also how long is the keyboard from left to right ?
Hi! I don't have a external sound card for my pc, with onlu usb cable can I get a good result? How about latency etc...
Is this keyboard for recording music
Does the Alesia vi have pad bank? Or can you only use the 16 notes ?
Thanks for the review. Your "wants" for a controller where the same as mine. Sadly, it took alesis a long time to release this thing, and last summer I picked up a novation launchkey 61... I like it but the keys (and velocity) are kind of crap. Would really like to upgrade to the VI61. anyway .. good review. thanks.
What about transport setup stop play record etc did it map it right away
it looks hard to know for sure which knob you're grabbing. I feel like they should have done 2 rows of 4 on top of 4. though I'm not sure what all those buttons under the knobs are
can you make a beat on how to use and map sounds to buttons on fl?
Great tutorial
this is what you call a real review. Thanks! The salesmen videos were getting boring
I appreciate someone giving an honest review, and you're right man you really can't find anything other than some sales person tryin' to sell thing this thing. I'm pretty much looking at this for the same reasons as you, money being the biggest thing. I was wondering whether you knew about any problems with using this thing with Logic X cause thats what ill use it with.. Thanks!
Local Baker No problem! Sorry though, I'm not familiar with Logic X, nor do I have access to it for testing.
I bought mine today!
All you need in the video is a link to buy one and this is platinum. :D
any updates on how you feel about this? any complaints or anything? I was thinking about this or an Arturia controller. idk but m-audio seems to have become a cheap exploitation of their past achievements, akai basically destroyed my interest in buying music hardware, and the other stuff is either overpriced cheap shit or intended for exclusive software.
Nice honest review man! I was just saying how there aren't any user reviews for any of the MIDI keyboards that I'm shopping and on here you confirm that I'm not crazy! hahaI'm really thinking about getting this but the programing part kind of dentures me from getting it. Could you maybe do a follow up video after having used the keyboard for a while ...any problems you may have run into?Thank man and thanks for the review!
+lotdproduction Thank you! Lots want to hear more about the software and a few other things so I'll see if I can work on another video.
maybe a noob question but is integration with Maschine seamless?
Love this review, but why not make a couple of videos on how to use samples on the pads seperate from the keyboard fo example?
Hey is it easy to maping into.the daw
Does the pads have a aftertouch feature?
i already bought this bad boy and it comes tomorrow. i seen this video after. but it made me confident in my purchase. also thank you for talking about the pads. that was my bug question mark. i use to have the korg trigger finger and that was pretty awesome but this one might have better soft touch sensors like you stated. great real world review. i will probably do a review as well just to further help people with their decision. Respect&Bless
+Christopher Brandao Bless! Enjoy the keyboard.
+Rhap Beats i got mine. did yours come with the front lip warped a little,(the lip infront of the key bed). mine is slightly warped. as if its been on a keyboard stand too long and someone pushed down on the lip.
ita not a big warp. just slight enough to notice though.
+Christopher Brandao No, mine isn't warped and I've had it for a year now. Yours might have been mishandled during shipping or something. Maybe get a return on that.
PLEASE HELP!!!
I cant get my keyboard to work what do I do??
It's not a plug in play for me!
-thanks
Love my Alesis VI49. I almost prefer it to my Akai Advance 49. I thought I would really like the Advance, and it's cool, but I honestly dig the feel of the VI49 more.
How do the presets work on this? Are they easy to organise like on the Advance 49?
Well it doesn't have an LCD screen on it, but it is fully midi programmable. I don't really use the presets, I map it myself. But you definitely have a lot of functionality, you can do lots with the Advance too though. Kinda depends on what you're looking to do.
PLEASE HELP!!!
I cant get my keyboard to work what do I do??
It's not a plug in play for me!
-thanks
Been searching to upgrade & this sold me. I wanted the MPK249 but I think the faders are useless to map when you have to go to bank B & mix. I use more than 8 mixers channels on every beat. I like finger drumming my drum tracks also & I have to Bank B those with my MAX 25 at times. Then you can't beat payin $200 less.
+Rick Rijuana Beats Word, this is exactly my mentality when I bought it. The only flaw so far is that the keys get squeaky after some time and the mapping software isn't that great, so beware. Otherwise, the value here is crazy.
+Rhap Beats
Just like you, I suffered from the squeaky keys, I bought this keyboard before anyone early on as well.
The squeaky key thing can be fixed, if you still use this keyboard, and are game to do so. You'd need to remove the housing of the keyboard, then pop off all the springs, and dismount the piano keys, which the keys are popped off by using a flat head in the hole slots you'd see in each key, with just a hair of a touch of force. Once all the keys are off, you'll notice two support beams per key, one row has a rubber guard with some lube, and the row nearest to the springs however does not... All you need to do is get some lube that is safe on plastics, and apply it on those beams, and bam! No more squeaks.
Will Alesis VI61 work with an iPad? Is it compatible?
Can i connect a sustain on it?
"boom" That's NOT it for me. I can not get any sound from this controller. I Have FL studio, and it does see it, but when I touch any key on the controller (Alisis VI 49) I get NOTHING! Please help.
Hello, I really liked your review, you cleared many of the doubts I had about the Alesis, so thank you, I just want to make you a small request, for the next video, DO NOT MOVE THE CAMERA SO MUCH !! I ended up dizzy from so many laps !! LOL
HI! Nice review.
I bought this VI61 and love it ! Only thing is I have a problem with some notes that won't play when holding down some others,
Would you please try this and tell me what results you get:
Hold down D3 and A3 together and while holding them repeat C#3.
Do you hear C#3 or only D3 and A3 ?
Thanks a lot for your help!
+Rene Lamy it happens to my vi61 too, holding the 3notes like a chord there's no problem but C#3 can be played and heard only once.
+feschka Not exactly the same problem as mine but very similar. I had to send mine for servicing. They swapped the main board! Repairs were done under warranty. I've been three months without my keyboard. All is fine now in the end.
+Rene Lamy thanks for your reply! I was so annoyed, had the same issue in other octaves and keys combinations... But it seems everything is ok now after I installed the latest firmware update released about a month ago! There's even an editor update, didn't try it yet though.
I found them on the Alesis site, legacy, products, vi61, and scrolling down to Updates & Drivers.
cheers!
+feschka Hey! Good news for you. And thanks for the info about the updates. I was not aware they were out!
Cheers!
Rhapsodist Beats Please tell me, if you're playing with right hand how do you lay your left hand? Those pads seems a bit in wrong place for me, it seems like perfect keyboard, but position of those pads is confusing.
Wiencon I don't play the pads and keys at the same time, so it's not a problem at all! If I need to use the pads, I just move my body to the left side of the keyboard and I don't experience any discomfort with the positioning. I think this is better than some other keyboards that put their pads above the keys. For those, I have to reach farther to use the pads. I like this Alesis layout better, but that's just my opinion.
So it passed a bit of time how do u feel working on this whith FL studio? I really liked this keyboard and i hope u still can to advise it like in your review?) cause im going to buy it)
MrHreNky I would still recommend it! I've had a lot of fun with it so far. Setup is still not that great with the Alesis software, but if you can deal with that, the hardware is excellent!
What are those "standard" buttons for?
Does this have pad banks?
what is ur experience with the pads??? playing piano notes on a pad isnt very impressive 2 say the least. im still trying to figure out how 2 configure it with the editor or in general 4 that matter
change the channel of every drum pad in the editor to a seperate channel from the keybed (ch.2), then save preset somewhere on your pc youll remember, and send preset to hardware as preset 1 after your daw will recognize the keybed and drum pads it as 2 seperate instruments
“It’s a piece of shit, dawg.”
Haha! Love it. Great review.
Is it better than the Novation Launchkey?
i have it not good board but transpose doesn't work on the MPC Ren
Thank you
Thanks for doing this but I had to turn away from this video due to too much movement of the camera. It was making me feeling really sick. I hope you do another one later. Thanks again.
Are the piano keys on this midi controller velocity sensitive? I'm new to buying controllers and I want to make sure I get what i'm looking for
Yes!
I can tell you more the board has aftertouch too.
nice one man thanks for the review, looks good!
Hey how loud are the keys?
"you won't notice the difference, unless you're an experienced player. Which I'm not by the way"
Sweet, me too 🤙
When you brought out the M-Audio I was sold! I have an old Oxygen 61 and the keys are plastic just like it . Man they do feel like total crap!
I just got this as a beginner and I’m so confused on how to make it work 😭 I can’t get my keys to do any noise
So I wan to learn piano and make digital music at the same time but not really heavily invest in an expensive piano would this suffice for me?
SilentNoise103 I'm in the same thing, I think this keyboard is good
Hi there, could someone give me a suggestion for the best MIDI Controller (Metal Body). i've been looking for it more than 5 hours
i'm looking for Midi Controller
-Simple (Dont need any fancy Knob)
-Metal Body (Its okay if theres small part of the body made by plastic)
-Real piano feel
heres my reference
Kontrol S Series - even theres some part of the body made by plastic and i hate the Light Guide but its still okay
Arturia KeyLab - i heard this midi keyboard is made by solid wooden and metal body but too much fancy unecessary knob :(
so thats it after googling more than 5 hours full of confusion
please help me guys i will very appreciate it!
THANK YOU :D
will this work with fl studio
Hey, planning to buy one of these, the 49 version actually, the date of the video is April so, what are your thoughts about this controller after months with it?, is it worthed?
I have a M-Audio Axiom Air 49, the knobs suck and faders feel cheap, so I'm selling it. Can you map all the knobs of this thing?
+Miguel López García Yes, you can map all the knobs pretty easily, at least with FL studio's link to controller feature. I'm still loving the keyboard, but the one issue is squeaky keys. A lot of keys are now squeaking on me :(
+Rhapsodist Beats (Rap Instrumentals) You can easily remove the keys and add any kind of lubricant to them. It will fix the issue.
Whats up man so im trying to buy a beat machine to make hip hop beats but im kinda in a dilema. I dont know if i should buy the "Akai XR20" beat machine or the "Alesis VI25" . Please let me know which one would be the better choice to buy for hip hop/ rap production beats ! Please help asap , thanks man
***** The Akai XR20 and Alesis VI25 are two completely different machines with different purposes. Its hard for me to give you a recommendation without more specifics with what you need. Do you have a DAW that you use? if so, which?
Rhapsodist Beats im just gonna be a beginner at making my own beats, so i use FL Studio.. I think the Alesis VI25 may also come with a DAW but not sure.. I also use a bit of Audacity to edit my songs
Rhapsodist Beats is this the main thing u use now to create your beats?
+LilCrookENT Do you need an interface for a microphone? The Akai XR20 has a mic input. But, to be honest, I'm not a fan of all-in-one stations. They're usually not great at any one particular thing. I'd rather have a dedicated midi controller, dedicated mic interface, ect. I'd go with the Alesis, or some other midi keyboard.
+LilCrookENT I use my Alesis keyboard about 40% of the time. Most of the time I'm using just my mouse.
iam hav pls tell me how to transpose
Hey man, I got it and it seems really great hardware, but as you said software is not so good.
Want to ask you, do you know how to assign play/rec/etc. buttons in FL ?
+MrHreNky Sorry I haven't mapped those buttons because I couldn't find any info on how. I'll update if I do figure it out
+Rhapsodist Beats (Rap Instrumentals) well ok thanks!
+Rhapsodist Beats (Rap Instrumentals) Hey man finally)
If you use M-Audio Oxygen 25 as your controller type instead of generic, you can use your editor to program transports as follows:
Rew CC: 114
FF CC: 115
Stop CC: 116
Play CC: 117
Loop CC (you're using FL unused)
Rec CC: 118
Hope that helps, it works for me.
Nice review! How's the build quality? Are the knobs made out of metal or plastic?
Anuj Sansare Build quality is a HUGE step up from my previous M-Audio KeyStudio. Knobs are made out of plastic, but I've never seen metal knobs on a controller before. The whole unit is plastic, but it feels very premium.
Rhapsodist Beats Alright. Thank you! ;)
Anuj Sansare you're welcome!
No expression pedal?
in mine vi25 pads are so unresponsive and each feel diffrend, one have pretty good responsive next need to be pressed rly hard its just sad, keys are ok but next time i would buy something diffrend :(
