English speaking is very common nowadays, but if she can speak Chinese, it will be an advantage for her in the future. We can see now the economic development in China is beyond expectation.
Yes, that's right!
Little baby is very cute! 😊
Kids are very adaptive in languages because the young mind absorbs linguistics like a sponge.
Thank you! Yes, that's true 😊
It's her first language.
You are so lucky to have such wonderful daughter. Sophia is so cure and pretty. My granddaughter is 4 years old now and speak mandarin since growing up with us after born in Canada, but her english is better than her Chinese now after went to day care. I took her for
online Chinese class and hope her Chinese can be better. It’s good Sophia’s grandmother can teach her Chinese character and enjoy the best time together.
Thank you!! Yes, we are so lucky to have Sophia's grandmother. That is great you took your granddaughter to online classes. I'm sure her Chinese will improve quickly. :)
Big bravo to parents.
Thank you!
Sophia will have a bright future! ❤❤❤She is the cutest!
She really is!
That’s really great that her grandmother has taught her to read characters at an early age. Many can speak Mandarin very well but cannot read and write it easily.
Yes, we are so thankful to have her here with us to be able to teach her :)
As a Chinese Malaysian, one of my cousins married an Italian girl whilst studying in the UK in the 1980s. He brought her back to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and had a daughter with her. At a young age, and after she started going to kindergarten and primary school, she became a natural polyglot. She spoke English with her father, Italian with her mother, Hakka with her grandmother, Cantonese with her Chinese school mates, and Malay with her Malay schoolmates. However, most Chinese Malaysian were trilingual at that time, being taught and speaking English and Malay in the national school system, and speaking at least one Chinese dialect with their immediate family (depending on which part of China they originated from) and the main Chinese dialect in the Malaysian state that they resided in. For instance, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor were considered Cantonese speaking states, Ipoh a Hakka speaking state, Penang a Teochew/Hokkien speaking state, and Johor a mainly Hokkien speaking state. Cantonese was the most widely spoken Chinese dialect in South East Asia from the 1970s to the 1990s due Hong Kong's dominance of international business and trade in the region, as well as Hong Kong soft power due to Cantopop and Cantodrama.
Unfortunately, since the late 1990s, most of the younger Chinese generation in Malaysia now cannot speak any dialects, with Mandarin replacing most of the Chinese dialects which had been prevalent in Malaya/Malaysia for almost two centuries. One of the main reason for this was the rising dominance of China as Asia's economic superpower, as well as the influx of Chinese tourists and business from China after 1997. Why 1997? Well, prior to 1997, China did not allow its citizens to have passports, and only elites from the Communist Party could get them. However, after the Handover of Hong Kong in 1997, the Chinese government started allowing its citizens to obtain passports, and the rest is history.
Ironically, Canada and Vancouver in particular, was a favourite emigration destination for many Hong Kongers prior to the 1997 handover. Many of them took up Canadian citizenships due to the fear of Hong Kong's handover to China. Vancouver was actually known as little Hong Kong due to the many Hong Kongers who migrated there. In fact, many Hong Kongers became "taikonauts" at that time, as they would obtain Canadian (and other countries citizenship such as Australian, British, American, etc) citizenships, and fly back and forth from Hong Kong where they family resided to the country of their adoption just to ensure that their foreign citizenship right continued.
It's great how easily children can pick up languages from their environments and making friends in school who have different cultural backgrounds!
I'm in Malaysia. My grandchildren grew up in our home, with many Chinese dialects and English. They speak English, later will pick up Chinese speech in school... UA-cam is another teacher
such a cute girl. She will be very smart growing up
in this globalized world the more language you able to speak the more powerful you would become. Opportunities utilizing from the language are everywhere. I speaks 4 languages, and I felt I had no problem in communicating virtually to everybody.
Very intelligent and cute
Before the age of 8, a child can pick up languages and musical instruments naturally.
She’s so good. We are also raising our son bilingual in Mandarin and English.
That's great! Being bilingual will definitely bring them so many opportunities in the future :)
Today I learned the difference between zhongwen and zhongguoren. Thank you ☺ I've only been learning chinese in duolingo and I thought those two meant the same thing. It still really helps to watch people speak the language to get a better understanding. That's why I clicked this video and I really appreciate the subtitles!
That's great! I'm glad you liked the video and subtitles! I think pretty much all of our videos for the last two years are all subtitled, if you're interested in more practice :)
English is an easier language to learn! No doubt she'll be fluent in both! 😊Go Sophia!
Yes! We hope she will be! :)
Any language at its best is hard
❤ Sophia.
👍 that she's both the English and Chinese teacher while being at the same time a Chinese and English student. 😊❤😊❤
@@bearykitty Yes! She does such a great job at both. ❤️❤️❤️
Immersive translate will help for learning and revision of a certain foreign languages
Yes, definitely!
She will be able to speak Chinese and English, from where I come from we are able to speak at least three languages
@@user-hq3fg1wb4q that's amazing! Being bilingual or polylingual is such a great life skill!
It's easy for children to learn another language. If children grow up in a Chinese family setting, it's natural that they will pick up Chinese as well. Many Chinese knows the English language too. So either way, it's good to know another language, but wouldn't be 'too' surprised.
Yes! We aren't surprised. A lot of people have been asking about Sophia's language skills so we just wanted to show where she's at with both. :)
How old is Sophia? I feel like her personality and speech has REALLY blossomed! It's so sweet hearing her talk. My son is all of a sudden talking a lot but I am never quick enough to catch it on video, whenever he sees the camera he stops talking lol
Aww thank you!! She is 3 but turning 4 in August! I feel between 2-3 they really start to pick up speaking so quickly. You will definitely be able to catch it on camera soon enough lol! :)
@@thehighsandluos Honestly my son will be 2 1/2 in Aug and I swear out of the blue his speech is just taken away! But Sophia is so adorable! English will come for her
@@OurJourneyHasBegun Such an exciting milestone! He is so cute as well! Thank you!
All the western people say Chinese is one of the hardest language to learn, and the best age to learn language is young age. So learning Chinese first is the logical step.
Yes, that makes sense! As an adult I find it pretty hard trying to become fluent in Chinese, but she learned so fast! :)
Better to learn Chinese earlier; English is easier to pick up.
Language can be learn . I speak English and Thai , but I am a Chinese . And I am damn proud of my heritage , unlike my countrymen here in Singapore, disassociating and worse , the women cut their heritage ties even to expand others .
Yes, you should always be proud of your heritage!
Learn Chinese from childhood is an advantage because she can pick up the different tones/phonetic. It is difficult to pick up when you learn that in adulthood.
Yes, so true!
The third language will be naturally French, which is another official language of Canada.
Yes! That would be great!
She is a native speaker if she’s been learning it since infancy
It is best to learn languages at a young age. Putonghua is so different from English. If one can read and write some simplified Chinese even better: at adult age this becomes challenging.
Yes, that's true!
Speaking English is for the present, but speaking Chinese is for the future.
So many benefits for both :)
Sophia
❤😂🎉❤😂🎉
@@puweiting ❤️❤️❤️
😄Sophia
A lot of westerners prefer to raise their children in China. What do you think?
I think it's great if that where they feel it's best for their family. We loved China, but eventually decided to go back to Canada because of a better work opportunity and we also knew that raising Sophia in Canada would still be a great choice. We are always open to moving around so who knows where we will be in 5 years :)
what is the home town of your husband in China?
Hanzhong in Shaanxi province :)
@@thehighsandluos surprised because your mother in law look very southern Chinese
@@andia968 Oh interesting! My mother in law's hometown is actually Harbin.
