I looooooooooved this! I've always secretly wondered what the shaykh will bring of his chem eng knowledge! I actually laughed out loud 🤣 when the shaykh started doing Trig.... polymath! ❤ Subhanallah, there is something so profound in the combination of maths and Imaan, I love this! ❤ I firmly believe that you have to worship Allah swt through exploring His signs in the world around you too and not only through sacred texts. The point he's made in maintaining balance here is incredibly important. There is a great imbalance when it comes to exploration and worldly innovation among Muslims, this area is being stunted due to misunderstandings around bid'a, and as a result Muslims now are comparatively so stagnant in this subhanallah. Like the religious classes in Pakistan pressured the govt. to remove an Ahmadi economist who was rated top 25 brightest, not because of competency, but because he was Ahmadi! If you're dying you don't go to a 'deviant' doctor too!? I mean was this economist going to be on a fiqh council giving religious fatwa's?

Rational Science. Religious Science. The Tension. The Compromise. The Chronicles. The Critics. Do Justice to the Truth. Historic Registrar. The Narrator. The Methodology. Presents Opponents' Belief as a Neutral. The Non-Participant Observer. The Polymath. The Contradiction.
And the cryptic conclusion of the Sh Professor.

You are just obsessed by your religeon. Biruni and others like him would still be doing this regardless of thier religeion. It just happned to be under the islam at the time and nothing else. Indeed the main teaching of ulama in Islam never approved this kind of works as your professor is saying. He had backround in more ancient tradition and cultures from India, to Persia to Greece, not of Saudi Arabia where Islam came from.

    Some thoughts:
    1. The ideal is that people should acquire a reasonable background in theological matters (and have "taqwa") before they seriously pursue and produce worldly knowledge (sciences). The danger with worldly scholars (such as Ibn Sina perhaps) is that they may exceed their expertise and propagate some philosophical ideas which are alien to Islamic values and such ideas may be detrimental in the long run for the society. In fact without religious knowledge we may even get misguided and misguiding (often second-rate, militant) scientists such as those that are a nuisance these days. Here this mainly refers to theoretical subjects, not experimental sciences (observations and data) and applications (engineering and technology).
    2. Religious scholars in power could still in theory follow the practice of the rightly guided Caliphs, who allowed multiple points of view and did not exceed the bounds. It's about the quality of leadership, rather than where the leadership comes from. What is needed are wise statesmen who are God fearing and who can shape the society in the light of Islamic principles. By definition such people cannot be fanatical.
    3. As a rule, religious beauty and perfection is to be preferred and desired over worldly glory. God alternates success between nations, and success in this world should not be preferred over the ultimate success. This does not mean abandonment of worldly knowledge, but a reordering of our priorities.
    4. Engaging in worldly affairs (i.e., producing worldly knowledge) is alright as long as the intention is that of benefitting mankind (defined broadly) and as long as that one is sincere in one's worship. This is explicitly mentioned by Imam Ghazzali rh, in the context of earning a living.
    Thank you.

As-Salaamu Alaikum Sheikh. InShaaAllah you read this comment.
I follow your lectures and greatly respect your opinions.
One thing I feel is, orthodoxy and it’s ilm, ilm of the dunya or politics or whatever it’s are the two sides of the same coin. Prophet Muhammad(SAW) has depicted this beautifully with the guidance of Allah(SWT).
One slight and very lean disagreement is that, Ulema today should reach to the level of knowledge of the world. Then there won’t be any issues in Ulema leading with power in their hands.
Alhamdulillah we have you, just as what I described.

I think you're making a fallacy right here it's not only these two options there is a third one for example if ibn sina did his medicine and left the theological philosophical issues to their experts no one would attack him and its not the heretical stuff that made ibn sina excel in his medical field which contributed truly to this civilization
and this applies to all the polymaths back then

Dude, even printing on papers were haram back then. Right now all Muslims write and print books, journals and papers. Even ulama does it. So how do you concur this into sticking to the boundaries between science and religion? Al-Biruni calculated astronomy to calculate prayer time which we all use now to plan our day. But back then it was haram. Science and religion are not separated. We’re just more into one field than another. They were never fully separated.

I think it was the clergy at the time of Hazrat Esa(AS) who wanted to punish Hazrat Esa(AS). So my answer is pretty simple that the Allah want us Muslims to explore and appreciate and describe His beautiful creation.
    Surah Al-Ankaboot Ayah 20 says:
Which in simple word means that explore this world and see how Allah has started the creation.
Darwin went on a journey, explored the pacific ocean, visited number of location, pondered over different species and gave a theory. Yes there can be defects in that theory but is this not the method Allah prescribed to get to know the beginning of the creation?
and i believe Darwin theory is near to truth than what the clergy tell us.
So Quran is always, always asking especially Muslims to explore and ponder and demystifying the beauty of Allah's creation and we cannot do it without decoding the formulae and theories of different processes of nature.

I enjoyed the lecture, as I always do, but I want to share my opinion on the last part of the topic.
I think, as Sheikh has himself discussed many times himself, with the Hindsight of today, and with the current understanding and tolerance which he preach and open mindedness, which he and other good Ulema preach, I think, it is possible to consolidate Deen and Siyasah in a body. As it was with the Rasool Ullah PBUH and Anbia AS before him, we CAN get a tolerant, just, humble, holistic, Government, and if I go on a stretch, it is the future of the Ummah/any muslim nation to do that.
    My 2¢

Interesting lecture you've put forth but here's my contention. You yourself said towards the end, that our salvation lies in our deen not in scientific discoveries. So if the ulama were in power over people like Biruni or ibn Sina, perhaps some scientific progress would have been halted but a lot less people would have been misguided and would have been saved from eternal punishment which is much more precious to any believing Muslim than a few "bragging rights". It's even possible that if the orthodox scholars were in power strange aqaid wouldn't even have been developed by Biruni or others since they would probably standsrdize the orthodox aqeedah and have it taught publicly.
However these are all "what ifs" and our job is to judge by the apparent. God's law (Sharia) has to be implemented and whether it "hinders science" or not is irrelevant

As "man from the west" and "infidel" I have to agree 100% - exactly the reasons for the stagnation of your civilization that are given in our books. Please note that in Christianity there are also factions in which there is a varying degree of "separation between Church and State," as we call it. It is the smallest in Orthodoxy and the largest in Protestantism. The Orthodox countries are the most backward and the Protestant ones the least. The solution for your civilization is to copy the idea of a university 100% autonomous from politics or religion, it provides in return competent lawyers, mathematicians, doctors, clergymen, etc. You must hurry - our civilization is collapsing, which is seen not only by specialists but even ordinary people, so in Within a few decades, you must be able to take over her legacy so that most of it does not end up in the furnaces, as do most of the scrolls from the Library of Alexandria. You guys reinventing how to manufacture a microprocessor would be absurd, wouldn't it?

Worldly prospects, as marvelous as they may sound, for the most part have no true weight in the eyes of the shari'ah. al-Biruni was a very erudite man from what this lecture demonstrates, and we may benefit from others like him, but if theological orthodoxy were to require, no amount of geodesy is enough to overturn a decision of reprimanding a man of heresy, or even executing him. As said man will realize, it will weigh little to none on his scales on Judgement Day, and even the most scientifically prolific man, on that Day, will wish to go back and play better cards in favor of his religion. Unfortunately for him, no amount of regret will grant him this wish. So while we appreciate these feats, the "clash" is very much specious. Amazing talk nonetheless.

Maybe the middle-ground is the critics to stick to their criticism of opinions rather than issuing blanket condemnations of individuals or engaging in outright demonisation. Maybe they should leave the matters of the individual to Allah, while criticising their unorthodox beliefs.

    As-Salaam O Alaykum
    Dr. Yasir Qadhi
Please give a detailed lecture on Ghazanavid Dynasty and what is your view about this and what Muslim scholars think about Sultan Mahmud Ghaznavi and why he conquer the Indian Subcontinent(Hindustan). There is a great controversy in Pakistan about this. Please guide us on this issue.
    Recommend some academics regarding this.
    Thank You
    From Pakistan

    Not me.

Me neither. I'm almost upset on YQs behalf. Although, I understand his caution. The extra long disclaimers w/the preemptive aim to disarm a nuclear bomb are just telling of the type of pressure he is under. And, I hate what it implies, a limit to his expression of the vast knowledge we all know is bubbling at the surface.

Critics are heavy on you at this moment. It's human nature to slip by in one or two instances. It's okay to correct. I urge you not to become silent by listening to those fool critics. I am a great fan of you. I benefitted immensely by hearing you and learnt a great deal. Please continue what you are doing. My faith only got stronger through you and also there are others as well
