Rooting Indoors over Winter. Roses & more

  • If you're enjoying the challenges of plant propagation, it can feel limiting when the landscape begins to fall into dormancy. What I'm enjoying these days is the fact that not every plant reacts equally to cold. This lets me continue to push the envelop of bringing hardy plant material, like roses, inside to controlled temperatures as cuttings. In this video I'll demonstrate with roses, rosemary, and also demonstrate with a few more tender indoor varieties I have on the go.

      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  4 місяці тому +3

      I go on the low end, like 24C/75F. I've used a number of different propagation mixes. Peat/perlite (like ProMix) has given me very consistent results, but recently I've just been using my bulk potting soil (a blend of composted bark and shredded wood fiber) and it's worked well for me too. So long as it's relatively low in active bacteria/fungus (unlike garden soil or compost) and also relatively light/free draining, you can manage propagation in a wide range of mixes.

    Thanks for another great video. I put rose cuttings in sand/ pea gravel several weeks ago. They are starting to root, and have roots that are maybe a quarter of an inch long. They are in a cool garage, that won't freeze, but also won't get above 50 degree. When should I take them out of the sand, and put them in soil in pots?

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  4 місяці тому +2

      I'd take it slow and patient - let them develop some good strong roots in their current location. Sand makes it quite easy for later removal and transplant. Sounds like they're responding well to their current conditions, so no rush in moving them along.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  4 місяці тому +2

      Generally 11 to 12 hours per day is the sweet spot for me - and I do this during daylight hours, with the indirect light through the windows supplementing the lamps. If I go much longer, I could trigger long-day flowering plants in propagation to switch from vegetative growth to flowering. Roses don't much care about daylength either way, but 12 hours is fine for them too.

    Happy holidays to you too! Here on Gotland in Sweden we had a magical white Christmas Eve with 20 cm of snow covering all mud with is a blessing with 2 Irish setters but late last night pouring rain and 20m/s wind gusts so I woke up to all snow gone and everything muddy and so much water that my lawn is a lake. 😢 This is the reason my flower beds are raised, I moved here in October 2021 and many of my plants I just planted to get them in ground drowned and rotted.
    A question, I know that mostly all plants, bushes and trees want good drainage. But is there any plants that survive these conditions? On top of that, almost all rain is concentrated late October to mid March, summers are hot and dry with water restrictions if you don’t have a own well (as I 🙏🏼 have) and I’m careful about watering anyway, are there any plants liking it like that? Aaaand on top of that, very alkaline soil and water, as this island is made of limestone. I would love to learn more which plants love (or hate) extreme conditions.

      I'm flexible. I'll often grab a bale of ProMix (peat/perlite) because it goes a long way in trays and I've had reliable results. This time of year I've just been cutting "opportunistically" around the yard, and the bulk potting soil (composted bark and shredded wood fiber) has done surprisingly well.

    • @juliknapp9270
      @juliknapp9270 4 місяці тому

      So it doesnt need to be a sterile seeding starting like medium?

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  4 місяці тому +2

      "sterile" would be overstating it, but garden soil or household compost is too rich in microbes, so the potting soil mixes I mentioned are a fairly good compromise

  • @sarmishthabanerjee1057
    @sarmishthabanerjee1057 4 місяці тому

    Hi Jason, I inserted chopstick in the soil mix of some small potted roses and it came out with barely damp crumbs of soil. Should I water them a little with diluted fish fertilizer?

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  4 місяці тому

      I wish I could be more helpful, but that final call of whether to water or not isn't something that can be done from afar. Personally, I have a frequency in mind based on the stage of rooting. It might be as little as a couple or three days for lightly rooted plants (because they don't have the same ability to reach deeply into the pot or plug for more moisture) or as much as a week for strongly rooted plants. That frequency, of course, is different based on the ratio of plant size to pot size and the growing conditions as well. I often lift the pots to feel the water weight or even gently tip the plants out to visually inspect the moisture level of the soil. If assessing moisture level is something that gives you pause, or you want a little more guidance on it, here's a good article for how professional growers look at it: www.growertalks.com/Article/?articleid=25029 For younger plants, I'd say I let it dry down to a 3, but for well rooted plants I target a 2 on the waterings scale pictured in the article. I can't say using a chopstick is a bad method, but it's just not something that I do.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  4 місяці тому +2

      I'm usually going for a basic cool room temperature, like 18C / 64F. The advanced budding on the nodes is not necessarily a good thing - but I suppose we'll find out! I generally aim my cuttings for a part of the stem with buds a little flatter against the stem, so there's more time for rooting before it tries to shoot.
