5:40 Nintendo didn’t save Alpha Dream… but they did save most of the employees Nintendo hired the vast majority of employees that got laid off during the Alpha Dream closure
its more practical to hire employees than buying a studio with financial problem.. by owning a studio, you also inherit all the debt and its not worth it
The difference between Panic Button and Shiver has to be the price. Panic Button is a prolific port house with the new Dooms and Witcher 3 to Switch. Shiver divesting from the sinking ship that is Embracer probably sold for pennies on the dollar compared to Panic.
I didn't even realise he still lived. Thought he'd died from a heart attack. He is all volume and click bait to get rent paid. And you shmos keep coming.
I think they chose Shiver because Embracer was probably selling them for cheap. Panic Button and Saber Interactive would certainly be much more expensive, probably not looking to be bought, and they are working with Nintendo anyway. They probably went on to buy Shiver because otherwise they would've been sold to another company and maybe stopped working with Nintendo.
I think you answered your own question in the video. This company worked on games that wouldn’t necessarily come to a Nintendo platform or has been on a Nintendo platform for almost 20 years. And it seems like the value for the cost was the biggest thing for Nintendo since Embracer is losing money, they probably practically gave the company away to Nintendo.
I personally think that the only truly big purchase that Nintendo will ever make is Bandai Namco and that's ONLY if they are at threat of being bought out by another company like say Capcom or Sony. This is due to the fact that they do help develop a lot of Nintendo's stuff nowadays with Smash being an obvious example. Otherwise, I think that they will purchase more Camelot/Good Feel/Next Level Games type companies.
I think it would be Sega. Once Nintendo realizes that they could make more money owning Sonic they'd probably go for it. Nintendo just hasn't caught up to that trend.
The reason that they selected Shiver not other studios is that they are only to port the current gen graphic games. Nintendo is probably going to offer a lot of ported game from the current generation when launching Switch 2, especially to make up the gap that there wouldn’t be any main series Zelda game at Switch 2's launch!
Don't lie RGT, you couldn't help but give your fans a Nintendo video. You know? Cause you are the greatest Nintendo UA-camr in history and you love us😁
So this is a surprise. I mean Nintendo allow alpha dream to close down and didn’t buy rare entertainment when they could. Yet the company ended up doing this ?!?
I'm pretty sure Nintendo bought Shiver because the price was too good to pass up and they can fulfill a need for the company with likely minimal need for oversight. The exciting thing will be that other companies will pay Shiver to port their games to Switch 2 which they will likely be intimately familiar with now that they're owned by Nintendo.
I would imagine Shiver is the cheaper "off brand" of Panic Button. Does the same job pretty well, waaay cheaper because Panic Button has wide recognition and is more expensive. Or maybe Panic Button isn't for sale.
Panic button is one of the porting studio recognized and work closely by Nintendo to work on Switch prototype to test the devkits in early day around 2012.. Thats why they did pretty good job when porting game like Rocket League, Doom, and some other notable port on Switch, and become in demand porting studio.. they financially stable and not need to be save by Nintendo meanwhile if Shiver get shutdown, Nintendo may loose one of prolific porting studio on their system.
@@zultriova89 Huh, had no idea they were so closely involved with Nintendo. After reading that, it's no wonder they were so effective with "impossible" ports.
7:36 because nintendo actually takes care of their studios and employees so we know they’ll be in good hands also it’s a small studio it’s not like Nintendo is buying sega or something
I'm sure the employees at Shiver are feeling good. Nintendo doesn't buy companies just to lay off everyone later and take the name. Nintendo really needs to sell the Switch 2 having to compete with the handheld gaming PC market. Having more exclusives and/or timed exclusives that most gamers want to play is the key to success. At the end of the day, its the games but with Nintendo, the hardware is just as important.
Recent actions by Sony and Microsoft make it seem that first party exclusivity is a dying concept. Nintendo buying a multi-platform developer may further prove that. I'm not saying there will be Mario or Zelda games on Playstation or Xbox but original IPs that are not so tied to the Nintendo brand.
He wouldn't care. Now if Nintendo got Sega, Square Enix, Konami, Capcom, Bandai Namco, SNK or Koei Tecmo, then it'll make him nervous because Nintendo would be taking away a Japanese publisher from Microsoft.
Great take on this. Love the let’s keep some of that same energy vibe line 😂 Though to be real Nintendo is not known for acquiring studios and shutting them down, they usually make smaller acquisitions that maximize profits. Alpha dream wasn’t saved, but the employees were. That way they don’t own any debt of the studio.
It seems everybody has forgotten about one major detail from last years 2023 Xbox games conference; which is when Phil spencer announced that he would be partnering up with Nintendo to bring activision and blizzard games to the switch; and more specifically, he mentioned call of duty. (Over watch is already a title, as well as a couple activision/blizzard games). Idk, i think this plays a huge role into Nintendo’s decision to buy this porting company. We all know how the old call of duty titles performed on Nintendo hardware… (not really good). This goes without saying that the switch 2 will be very powerful, I want to say competitive with the XSX and PS5, so porting/transferring games traditionally made for those consoles should bring in a lot of new customers, and the deal Phil spencer made which acquired activision and blizzard in the first place (to make them more accessible, to make more money) will definitely play out in front of us on the activision/blizzard side of things for sure.
"Why didnt they buy Panic Button?" Probably because either Panic Button is not for sale right now, or because it was not as good a deal economically as buying Shiver.
I heard the name Shiver, sounds very interesting as I'd always say. But it's also familiar with the name of the studio. I'm gonna have to learn more about Shiver. Like I really want to. Shivers is in Miami, Florida like you said. And I also live from Florida too.
It's like you said Nintendo bought Shiver for such a ridiculously cheap price that I understand why they didn't go for the panic button. Nintendo has probably realized how big the third party support on the Switch 2 will be, they are preparing themselves
Acquisition requires two (or more parties) to agree on terms and price. You can’t just walk in and buy a company because you want to. Microsoft wanted to buy Nintendo and they laughed at them at any price. So why not company X or company Y? Because they couldn’t agree…
Well, given that Embracer Group is selling off their developers because they’re in financial debt, I’m not surprised, but them selling off one of their developers to Nintendo? That surprised me a lot, now Nintendo has three North American developers that they bought, the previous two are Retro Studios in Texas, and their Canadian golden boys Next Level Games, both of which are thankfully still around.
The graphics are better on the ps5 but the vibe & oled of the nintendo switch for some reason its way more enjoyable sounds better & more real in my opinion.
Iron Galaxy is legit, no doubt. But my vote would be Saber Interactive, Witcher 3 was a more impossible port than Skyrim and all 3 Crysis games was harder to do than Doom Eternal.
I just think embracer was selling them off for cheap because if I was Nintnedo I'd buy Panic button instead. They brought Doom 2016 to switch and that was one of the reasons I got the system.

"why didn't they buy up panic button?" Maybe panic button didn't want to be bought out?.... I mean we all see what happened with Microsoft, maybe some studio owners aren't willing to put their teams in that position just for one time short term gain.
I'm thinking buying stocks at shiver might be a good idea. Leading up to switch 2 they're gonna me busy and their networth gonna go up. Nintendo knows something we don't.
I have Hogwarts Legacy for the Switch. For a game that's as big as this one, it runs decently well. The frames are manageable, but do tend to slow down when there's a lot onscreen. There Are graphical glitches when you are further away and there are effects missing, as well as some animations, but it's Nothing like The Force Unleashed for the Wii. It's Actually a game worth playing on the Switch.
Shiver is a bunch of ex-EA guys. Gary Bowser is an ex-EA guy. They specialized in bringing games to Switch and Embracer was likely closing the studio. Seems like a no brainer buy. Especially as it seems Nintendo spend $10 + whatever debt they’ve been saddled with.
