  • SV KuzKuz is a vintage O’Day Ospray a 16’ daysailer from 1965. She spends a week on the water and has a successful shakedown cruise. Everything works. She was previously out of the water for 10 years before I bought her. Showing her some love while I refit her over the winter. For now I’m pleased with the progress. Im open to opinions and suggestions. Let me know your thoughts in the comments. I hope you enjoy this video. Check out the rest of the playlist.

      I’m kind of puzzled. I had a old day 192. I sold that a few months ago and I purchased this day sailer 2. I noticed you mentioned I think on one of your videos that it did not have a backstay so I’m kind of confused. What hold up the boom? Any thoughts on that would be helpful. Thank you

      @ I believe the episode I tagged is the one that mentioned no back stay on these small sailboats. They only have the side stays and forestay. So the mast is held down by those three supports and the tension applied to the mast base. Kind of like a bow and arrow at tension. Larger sailboats have a back stay (support wire/line from the top of the last to the back of the boat). It was odd Learning and trusting this but I also felt a little better knowing my main sheet can provide some support to prevent the mast from going forward, however it is not necessary due to the small sail area… I’m not a boat builder or marine architect but that’s what I learned preparing to install my running rigging.

      She’s a fun 16’ O’Day Ospray Daysailer from 1965. I had do some fiberglass work and installed a hinge tabernacle. Easy trailer and launching. Definitely easy solo sailing.

    At this point, although comments may say that you need new sails, etc., this is admittedly an older boat & an older design that was never set up to have a lot of sail shape adjustments & racing/ planing was not the purpose of these boats. My 16ft.McVay Falcon from 1968 has very similar lines & it never had a boom vang, though that control is very useful for flattening the sail upwind. I have launched my boat once only in Aug.2024, using a 55lb. thrust trolling motor, as my standing & running rigging are not quite ready. I launched on a hot day with no wind, so e- motoring was OK!

      @@FlatlandMando good to know about the older sail. These are definitely ODay Ospray sails. Some folks point out the possible “stretch” in the sail. I’ve thought of lower the boom to tighten up the sail some more but then I’d be ducking too low for this “middle aged” guy. I did purchase hardware to install a boom vang. I also put in some electronics that will show on an up coming video. I added navigation lights, anchor light, cabin lights, bilge pump, phone charger and more! She’s coming along great. Just went sailing today!

    You probably already know this but just in case, you need battens in your mainsail. It has pockets for them already so it was designed to have them. It’ll help that old sail hold a better shape.
    Edit: I just got to the part in the video where you address this. I knew you knew 😊

    Sir try to turn a boat towards wind when you raise a sail, even if you are in the dock
    It will make your life easier
    Just reverse it by hand an raise it 👍good job 👏🏻

      @russelllutwyche5736 Рік тому

      Yes, I was going to add the same comment.
      It’s best to put the boat “head to wind” when you were putting the sails up. Doing it the way you did meant the sails were side onto the wind and would power up, potentially pushing the boat over.

    • @solitudeandsailing
      @solitudeandsailing  Місяць тому

      @@russelllutwyche5736 if the wind was strong enough it could, unless one depowers the sails. Ideally raising the sail in irons provides the least resistance. Sometimes there’s not enough room to do so.

    • @solitudeandsailing

      Only two blocks on the boom. I’m thinking of adding a boom stay which will make it three blocks

    you really need to replace your sails, It will make a huge difference, the baggy sails are very inefficient, and in strong gusts it can capsize you very quickly. Instead of driving you forward like they should ,they act like a big bag and grab the wind and can't dump it as quickly

    • @solitudeandsailing

      @@solitudeandsailing Is your goosneck adjustable? Then it might rectify the shape somehow. My guess is either your sail is shagged from streching all those years or it might not even be an original, so it is probably not cut for this mast. Are you sure your halyard is all the way up? Anyway you would always want to trim your sails to your hardware than the other way around. Have nice sailing time, best wishes from Greece.

      @@solitudeandsailing Make sure your halyard is all the way up. Then check if your goosneck is adjustable. Outhull also maybe a little bit loose. My guess is that your sail is either too old which would justify that it is shaggy or this is not an original sail and mayb cut to a differnt dimensions rig. Anyway always think how to trim your sails to your hardware rather that the other way around. Try taking the main to a sails tailor with the dimensions of your rig. Enjoy your sailing and stay safe. from Greece

      Main looks like my old one, just has a lot of miles ( meters) on it. I think the boom could be lower, I have a similar goose neck to the Oday. And since its not loose footed, hard to trim just right.

      Don’t know if it’s possible on this particular boat, but a Vang/kicker system would flatten and improve the sail shape, no end.
