Solitude and Sailing
United States
Приєднався 27 кві 2015
Come along as we head out on the water in the adventures of Solitude And Sailing. We are sailing out of Rhode Island as we explore coastal waterways, inland lakes, hiking trails and campgrounds while sharing life on the water in a way that is uplifting and encouraging. I find it so fulfilling to be out boating both in solitude and with good company. There's always a new skill to learn, a task to be done, places to explore and overall nothing like a day of Solitude and Sailing.
Our sailing, crusing and fishing adventures are aboard MV SOLITUDE II (36' Pacemaker Sportfisherman), SV KUZKUZ (1965 O'Day Ospray daysailer), SV KATCHUPA (1977 Alcort Sunfish), and SV KYRON (1977 Pearson 26). In the 2024 season, we sold our Pearson 26 to a good friend. May SV KYRON continue to enjoy fair winds and following seas.
I hope you enjoy these videos,

Learning guitar for sailing trips. Mysteries of the Sea by Solitude and Sailing
Thanks for sharing your adventures with us. I never miss a video, and the vicarious joy of sailing was especially appreciated after I hauled my boat out in October. I look forward to next season's sailing videos, and until then, hope to see a few of your boatyard project videos as I get to work on my own.
Thank you. I appreciate all of your comments. This bitter cold here. I’m definitely looking forward to spring launch
Very nice. Staying calm even when things go wrong.
@@beorbeorian150 thank you
Have a great winter. See you in the spring. :)
@@karenjcardoza Happy New Year! I’m moving SV KuzKuz to dock 12 right across from SOLITUDE
Nice you made some time to get out on the water. Put a slug on the clew of main ( if you have a groove in boom), to keep foot closer to boom. Look forward to 2025 videos, cheers!
@@olivei2484 yes, Happy New Year!!! She’s a work in progress but we are getting this boat improved with each season
@@solitudeandsailing I had to look it up, but my mainsheet hangs like yours. I use a boom hanger to keep mine out of my face (looks like a u-bolt, rivet to boom).
@ for this mainsail the small bungee work but it won’t work on my other mainsail since it slides into the boom. So I need out some type of U shaped device to keep the main sheet from sagging.
❤❤
Much easier to use masking tape. But good job
@@paulgoodwin1201 thank you for the advice.
Playing catch-up on my subscriptions, so I'm a little late on this one. I really enjoy these laid-back sailing videos though. The project videos are all great too, but this is a relaxing little slice of the sailing life I miss while my own boat is freezing in her cradle in the boatyard. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
@@kyle_sv_xanthus thanks for the input. I was just wondering earlier today if I should pick up the pace of my videos or keep the tranquility of sailing as it is. I find sailing to be so relaxing. It’s a great outlet to destress. I can’t wait for spring launch.
@@solitudeandsailing There's a lot of faster paced sailing channels out there. In my opinion, capturing the real tranquility of sailing is what sets your channel apart and makes your videos feel so much more genuine, almost like the viewer is stepping aboard the boat with a friend.
I would love to see how you prepare the boat for painting thanks i enjoyed

The centerboard caught me unaware on my "new" ('69) Oday17 Daysailer. I took her out several times and thought she sailed like crap, turns out the little pivot point was so rounded the raising/lowering handle wasn't doing anything. So I was sailing around without any centerboard. Explained so much. I have it(CB) in my kitchen at the moment with fiberglass resin curing on the repair. Next time the CB fails I think I will have to buy a new one.
Definitely need that center board lowered to counter balance the boat. It makes a huge difference in steering when under sails
that's a sweet little sailboat!
Thanks
Nice install. Like the power switch panel. One thing I did when I put driving lights on my pickup, was build the whole setup on the dining room table, including relay and switches. I used aligator clipped jumper wires. Throw-back to my physics labs. Always a good plan to step back, and relax. You did a nice job on keeping wires tangle free. Also, shout out to nurses, as I hurt my hand and received care from the nicest people. Thanks!
Glad you had good nursing care! Agree with stepping back and relax. It does help to return with a fresh look at the job
Thank you for that. Great video.
I just picked up a 1970 day Sailor to this was September 2024 that I changed the mass and cut it New Tabernacle but I’ve been looking at your videos and I’m telling you Brother you inspire me keep it up
@@waynemiles2680 thank you for the encouragement. I have videos of upgrades coming out. Hopefully they will give you some suggests. I’m also open to new ideas.
I’m kind of puzzled. I had a old day 192. I sold that a few months ago and I purchased this day sailer 2. I noticed you mentioned I think on one of your videos that it did not have a backstay so I’m kind of confused. What hold up the boom? Any thoughts on that would be helpful. Thank you
@ ua-cam.com/video/2oOgv55tNpE/v-deo.htmlsi=eh3CkpzL22mk4iWO
@ I believe the episode I tagged is the one that mentioned no back stay on these small sailboats. They only have the side stays and forestay. So the mast is held down by those three supports and the tension applied to the mast base. Kind of like a bow and arrow at tension. Larger sailboats have a back stay (support wire/line from the top of the last to the back of the boat). It was odd Learning and trusting this but I also felt a little better knowing my main sheet can provide some support to prevent the mast from going forward, however it is not necessary due to the small sail area… I’m not a boat builder or marine architect but that’s what I learned preparing to install my running rigging.
@@solitudeandsailing thank you I appreciate that info

I wish I had the ability to work on my boat at my house, I live in an HOA area. Almost impossible to find houses without one, and nearly all of them forbid boats unless its in a garage. Got an oday daysailer recently and its in pretty good shape, just needs a few minor things but even that is hard when you don't have anywhere to work on it.
So true. Have you tried a storage unit? It might be able to fit in one. Best of luck on your boat upgrades

Nice dock departure. Always feels a little chaotic to me. I once forgot my sails at home, realized it about 15 miles away.
@@olivei2484 thank you for the comment, especially coming from someone who can relate. Forgetting my rudder was the worst. The thought of having to take everything down drive home and get the rudder… Oh man. I was fortunate my son was free and able to bring it to me. I did not wanna leave my boat there at the public lot unattended.
@@solitudeandsailing Yup. I was on my way to the coast, about an hour trip, had to turn around and drag the boat home. I forgot my life jacket once, only to realize it after everything was set up. Fortunately our lake has a loner life jacket program, and was able to use one for the day.
very nice, just what I needed to see right now.. thank you
That was a good chunk of ice. Maybe covering without the mast on deck might help keep a little more water tight? My dinghy has transom drains, so park her a steep angle and most of water drains out.
@@olivei2484 I’d have to develop another method to keep to cover from concaving in. Also use a more waterproof cover.
I got a 1976 Pearson 26 and i had no way to verify my rigging. These are invaluable videos, thank you.
@@30ftunder39 glad I could help. You might find this link beneficial sailboatdata.com/sailboat/pearson-26/
My McVay 16 Falcon (1968) has a glassed floor, continuous with the seats, which does use up room because the interior is not as deep. I have a lot of foam in the bow, lightly glassed in. I don't want to take all of it out but eventually I have to cut way more ports into areas I cannot reach. You have a beautiful cruising ground & you can tell at the launch that the water is nice.
@@FlatlandMando the Falcon 16 looks very similar to the ODay Ospray also 16’. The foam helps with flotation should there be a capsize. I’ve seen some people remove old waterlogged foam and replace with the liquid kind. One guy filled his bench seats and ballast with pool noodles. I let the water drain out and plugged the drain holes. Will unplug when I haul out. Yes, Narragansett Bay is large enough and pretty much protected harbor providing for long hours of sailing. Weather permitting that is.
At this point, although comments may say that you need new sails, etc., this is admittedly an older boat & an older design that was never set up to have a lot of sail shape adjustments & racing/ planing was not the purpose of these boats. My 16ft.McVay Falcon from 1968 has very similar lines & it never had a boom vang, though that control is very useful for flattening the sail upwind. I have launched my boat once only in Aug.2024, using a 55lb. thrust trolling motor, as my standing & running rigging are not quite ready. I launched on a hot day with no wind, so e- motoring was OK!
@@FlatlandMando good to know about the older sail. These are definitely ODay Ospray sails. Some folks point out the possible “stretch” in the sail. I’ve thought of lower the boom to tighten up the sail some more but then I’d be ducking too low for this “middle aged” guy. I did purchase hardware to install a boom vang. I also put in some electronics that will show on an up coming video. I added navigation lights, anchor light, cabin lights, bilge pump, phone charger and more! She’s coming along great. Just went sailing today!
Thank you Sir for a beautiful video and beautiful inspirational words. I have always loved sailing and I also like you got hooked to Sunfish sailing thru Lee Montes channel and now I came across your channel a true blessing. The good Lord blessed me recently with a lady that was giving away the mast, spars, sail, daggerboard, and rudder and tiller with extension all for free. I am now in the process of buying a 1980 Sunfish. Soon I will be on the water experiencing that solitude you speak about looking forward to more of your videos. God bless.
@@rolandorfortunato456 what a nice lady to provide all of those parts for free! I purchased my running lines on www.sunfishdirect.com (I’m not sponsored, just sharing my experience). I have a McVay Falcon of 16ft. & made in about 1968, looks very similar lines & size to your boat. To no great surprise, my boat needs a lot of work too. I see you use an over size genoa jib to sail...do you do that without the "main"? I don't have a mast tabernacle but want to build one!
@@FlatlandMando I use my “Genoa” head sail both with and without the mainsail. It works great in light winds by adding my power than my smaller jib.

Just a quick true story that I think you will appreciate.. My wife and I love sailing as passengers and for years have talked about purchasing our own vessel over and over, but never did. We truly love the ocean, it's beauty and the feeling of peace and serenity when sailing. Something I think most folks take for granted..Anyway, while searching for a sailboat, I stumbled on your beautiful videos. I remember saying to myself, "Wow, he gets it" and obviously couldn't wait for your next sailing episode to arrive... In the interim and thanks to a little Divine Intervention. I was contacted by a family member who advised me that my Godson was looking to sell his sailboat because he and his young family needed something larger. Well,We'll, wouldn't you know what kind of sailboat he was selling???? Yup, a 1973 Pearson 26. Talk about Divine Intervention, Wow... Yesterday evening my wife and I went for an introduction sail with my Godson, his wife and youngest daughter. It was as he would say, Epic.. What a beautiful time with them and his Pearson 26. It was Perfectly Perfect. I guess you know which sailboat were going with...Lol. Thanks so much for sharing your adventures on "KYRON" between your videos and my Godsons need for a larger sailboat maybe, just maybe God willing we will see you on the water. That would be great....
