Hello, Jon! Just to help clarify the answer Final Draft gave you here. This tutorial is about how to use the Outline Editor above the page ruler. Beats are different from Scenes in this program. When you add a BEAT, it's a card that shows up on the Beat Board. As Final Draft answered in their comment here, in the Outline Editor (the sections above the page ruler that say Outline 1 and Outline 2), you have to drag your beats down the outline bars/sections to make room for the new beat. However, if you like to plan your script by Scenes, you can do what you're asking. Here's how... 1. Be sure your cursor is either on the Beat Board or in your Script page, depending on where you are in the program. (If you try to change views, they are grayed out if your cursor is not in the right place.) 2. On the VIEW tab, click SCENE VIEW 3. There are two ways to add a new scene: a. Right-click (Command + click) in the Scene area below the page ruler and select "Insert New Scene" from the context menu that appears. b. From the INSERT tab, select "New Scene" Let's say you have three scenes already added to your scene view: Scene 1, Scene 2, Scene 3. And you decide you want to add another scene between Scene 1 & 2... 1. Right-click (Command + click) on Scene 1 2. Select "Insert New Scene" from the context menu that appears. 3. I'll try to answer your question. I'm assuming you're asking if certain colors mean certain things? If so, then that is entirely up to you and author's choice. For example: Blue cards for you might be A Story beats, green might be B Story beats, and yellow might be C Story beats. OR you could use colors to reflect the beats for your characters. Blue could be the "John Doe's" scenes that have to pertain to his story arc, and green are for Jane Smith's story arc. Whatever you want! I hope this helps. Happy writing!

Hi, Scott! I might be able to answer your question. I'm on Windows, so if you're on a Mac, some things might be a little different. I'll try to accommodate. "How to setup up Outline 1" 1. I recommend you start by ensuring you're in the Beat Board view. If you're starting out on your script view, be sure your cursor is on your script page. Then from the VIEW tab/ribbon, choose "Beat Board". (If you're not on your script page, the Beat Board option is grayed out.) 2. Once on the Beat Board, there are a few ways you can add a new beat: a. INSERT tab > New Beat b. Double-click anywhere within the Beat Board area c. Right-click (or Command + Click) in either Outline 1 or Outline 2 sections above the beat board, just above the page ruler 3. If you've added a Beat by using 2c, then the beat is already on the Outline 1 or 2 section AND appears in the Beat Board. You can click and drag the beats from there in either places. However, if you added a Beat using 2a. or b., it will not appear on the Outline 1 or 2 section. Simply click-and-drag the beat from the Beat Board up to the Outline 1 or 2 sections above the page ruler. 4. Hover your mouse over the edge of the beat on the Outline 1 section to get the double-headed arrow, then click-and-drag the edge to lengthen the duration of the beat. EX: If you want your Pre-Story beat to start on page 1 and end on page 2, drag the beat to the far left of the Outline 1 section, then click-and-drag the edge of the beat to the page 2 marker on the page ruler.
