I am thinking to give these features a try. I usually do a very long Scripment before going into a script software. I prefer writing freely in a word doc with lots of comments and notes. Just after solving all those comments and notes, writing a subtext of each character at each scene I start to organise them in a script software. These tools of outlining seems usefull to combine with my personal way of writing. Still need to get a better understanding of them by actually writing using Final Draft 12. Thanks for your video!

I'm so used to writing out my notes and outlines , or if I did type it out I would just do a bunch of bullet points., or a simple mind map app, so I suddenly became really intimidated with how to figure out how to transfer the concept into the program. I've just started with FD12, I was using Slugline 2 before. I was outlining in Slugline in the same way, although it's a more simple programme so no index cards. Essentially you write your outline straight into the script. A good feature was that you could move the beats around once they where in there. So pretty much the same except the beat board. I'm getting on well with FD12 but I was looking for a way to have a scratch pad in the split view. I find it useful to dump bits of script somewhere while I'm writing / editing scenes. Seems like it would be useful for other reason too but I can't find that functionality which is surprising. I wonder if anyone knows if this is possible? I'm using a big index card at the moment but it seems a bit messy. Thanks for great video, very helpful!
It a trick I discovered in Fade In. It's better than an Index card, but not totally split view... but try it. It works for me. With your file OPEN, open a New File. You'll see it in a TAB at the top. Just click the other tab for your original document, and keep notes (Format them as GENERAL) in the New Doc. ... Remember to SAVE and Name your Notes Doc! Just Toggle between them at the top TAB bar under the Tool bar. OR You could just do Split View Vertical but have one side as the BOTTOM of your Script. and take your notes there (still format Element is GENERAL for your Notes). You can delete them later or copy/paste them to a separate doc later.
Many thanks for this tutorial! I only have one question - when I adjust the length of a beat in Outline 1 (Act 1), it doesn't affect the beats in Outline 2, and I can't understand why. Do I need to connect those Outline 2 beats to the beat in Outline 1 (Act 1)? Thanks in advance!
How do you add the beat boxes to Outline 2? when I drag them up they're so thin I can't read them. It's not clear. Also, the last bit about editing (in the Outline? In the Beat Board?) changes the Outline, right? or not? Thanks
If your beats are too thin in the outline editor you need to zoom in so that you can grab their beginning or end with the mouse and "pull" them bigger. About editing: changes go only one way. If you make changes in the outline editor you can send them to the script, but not the other way round.
Your pronunciation of the word HIERARCHY is wrong - It is pronounced like HIGHER - KEY. Higher-key and higher like flyer or fryer its HIGHER then KEY makes HigherKey = Hierarchy - Amazing video btw I learn A LOT from you, thanks!

Now I understand the functionality of connecting beats. All I had to do was connect them to the appropriate Act. Super helpful!
