as someone who is a percussionist, any time I wasn’t playing for a section, me and my friend (who was also in percussion) would just be vibing to the music. Especially in this one song, Colossus, where I had crash cymbol and he had triangle. Every time I had to crash the cymbals together, he would say "crash" in the most monotone voice you can imagine. Good times.😂

Man….why do percussionists get to have so much fun? As an alto sax player, I hated sleigh ride. You either get boring parts, or the high notes killed you. It’s amazing how much fun you can have when you don’t have to have an instrument in your mouth the entire time
They're having way too much fun, my band directors would chew us out if we did this during a concert. But hey it's Christmas (when this video was recorded obviously) and the crowd enjoyed it so I'm not gonna be critical👏👏
As someone who has played this piece before in band this stuff is hard to learn for a middle school band so we didn’t do it like them but I played marimba with a friend and this shit can be difficult I don’t think I could ever play as good as they can
@@43s1r Only for snare/drumset/timpani you have to learn (rolls, coordination of hands&feet...) and for melodics, you have to learn where the notes are (glockenspiel, xylophone.....) But if you know piano, that will help you For basically all other percusison, from triangle to bass drum, fom shaker to suspended cymbal......it mostly shows itself. If you know rythms, you can do percussion! So you could, if you *really* want to go into percussion instead of playing the Squeek, you can start with the smaller non-melodic percussion (cymbals, triangle, slapstick, wood blocks etc.) ;)
MIddle school french horn/bass clarinet player. we had one of our percussionists run around in the audience in an elf costume for this song. he snuck up behind people. but he went straight to my mom as requested.

I think your snare might need some tuning. that snare drum sounds so off imo. other than the wacky snare, this was great, and yall put a lot of personality into the music! Just a tip, putting a phone or a wallet onto your snare drum will get rid of that ringy, open sound and make it sound better and more in tune. also, your snare player was very loud (probably caused by the microphone angle), which did not help with the wacky sounds coming from it. Great playing though!

My school's snare used to sound just like that, until I took it home and tuned it one day. having a clear, concise, sharp, and pretty snare sound will do wonders for your band's overall sound, compared to a ringy, open snare. But the playing was great, and all the player's did great. It is actually the band director's fault, as he is supposed to be the person tuning the drums, or hiring someone else to do it. I loved this performance, and i am not hating at all.
@@wheel326 Oh no its not that, the problem is the ring/open sound that stays for like 1 beat after he hits the drum (really apparent at 3:17 ish). A snare is not supposed to ring like that, it sould have a clear and precise sound to it.However, it's an easy fix, and all you need to do is either tune the drum, or just put a phone/wallet on the head. It will completely minimize that sound, and make the snare sound way prettier. You are probably just used to a snare that sounds like that in your band, which isnt normal. I hired a professonal drummer to help me tune my snare one day (I would recommend just looking it up on youtube if you plan to do it, its way cheaper and tuning a snare isnt too hard), and after that, it sounded way better. A snare starts to sound like that after you leave it without tuning for a long time, and by the sound of it I would say its probably been over a year, maybe even two, since that snare has been tuned.
