Steffi Graf Return of Serve (versus Serena Williams 1)

Two remarks: (1) Steffi has no problem returning Serena's serve; (2) The serve nothwithstanding, Serena's game plan versus Steffi is no different than Seles' or Vicario's. It is to play Steffi's backhand until such a time when there is an opening for a backhand dtl. Here is the problem. That dtl backhand is not a high percentage shot. particularly against the bounce of a slice backhand or a ball from the inside out forehand that is tailing away from you. That is why it seldom worked, as in the second point in this clip. Indeed, the percentages, however high risk Steffi's game appeared, still favored Graf's forehand. With the inside out forehand, Steffi was always attacking over the low part of the net, while her opponent was forced to attack over the high part of the net. Game, set, match, Graf... Hong Kong 1999.
