This video is sponsored by Powermatic (www.powermatic....) and Titebond (www.titebond.com/)
A few months ago, renowned turner Ashley Harwood came out to visit the shop. Coincidentally, my new Powermatic 3520C lathe has just arrived. What better way to break in the new lathe than to have an expert give it a solid workout. We filmed two projects, including a large bowl and the subject of this video: a small finial that's part of her awesome sea urchin ornaments. I don't know anything about wood turning, but she's very good at it. I can tell because it looks extremely easy.
Ashley is uncomfortably talented. It's flat out eerie how precise she is on the lathe.
It's rare I find myself sitting there dumbfounded with my mouth open while watching a video. Jawdropping!
Switch & Lever agreed and she says "all there is to it" lol
Ya, but I made a large dowel once...
Amazing work! What a gorgeous little finial! Hats off to Ashley
That’s just about the most amazing thing I’ve seen in a long time.
I was so afraid it was going to snap off! Nice machine, nice video, nice job!
Wonderful demonstration, she makes it look so easy. And such a delicate touch required to create the finial.
We Old Farts in the Turning Community, LOVE OUR Ashley!!! The young folk Love her too!!! Great Video Marc! Have A Super Week!.....Gus
Goodness! Her precision and control are just mindblowing
There are three things going on here: Sharp tools, Hard Wood and a ton of Talent. WOW!
Dad turned wood into his 90's. He was a spindle turner, and made 100's of candlesticks. It's a lifetime hobby (or career?) that does take talent, but if you have perseverence, can be a learned skill. Ashley had a great teacher, and has really honed her talent. Beautiful work.
OMG! That is art in real time. What talent for sure. Invite her back please.
She is a true professional
Very good at the craft of turning
This finial is amazing
Amazing! You don’t know how difficult it is until you try it. Beautiful!!!
Wow. She made that look so easy!
But now you can’t blame the lathe if a turning comes out wrong :) Great video!
Beautiful. That lathe is pretty awesome too!
Very cool. She sure makes it look easy.
The finial is so tiny and cute! The wood-turner has a great degree of skill on the lathe.
Incredible work and such precision with the tools. Thanks for sharing! 👍🏻
Dang, I'm amazed at how it doesn't snap! Incredible detail... - Jim
She is incredible!
I am more of a woodturner than anything else, and this was awesome! I am envious of her young eyes...and wish I were half as good.
Stunning work
Ashley has so much talent - I'd love to be inside the heads of some of the really old timers that are sometimes pictured front row at her demo's ... "What's this young whippersnapper think she's gonna do here?". (15 minutes passes) "Dayum" 😮
Totally thought you were going somewhere else with the comment...
That’s amazing she makes it look so easy
Crazy fine motor control. And I would imagine insanely sharp tools. Very cool.
That really was some eye candy! The little final isn't bad either! She is obviously very talented.
When I saw the finial I was wondering how it was turned. Great process of working complete from the far end back to the chuck. I've seen others that will support the thin section with one hand and turn it thin holding the tool with the other hand but this is great technique. Thanks for the demonstration.
The fact that she can get it so thin is incredible! I’m just starting out and I’ve had my wood snap only a diameter of half an inch. This woman has got some skill!
Ashley is amazing. She used to set up a lathe in the farmers market in Charleston. I recently saw a beast of a table she turned for Goebels Furniture in St. Louis. That table was stunning. She is no longer a rising star she is the star. I would love to hear an interview with her.
That is the cutest thing ever! Nice turning too 🙂
She is something else!
That lady is the real deal. Plays piano pretty darn good too. Saw a demo by her on St Cloud. Nice lady.
Stunning.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this. Saw the teaser on Instagram and this is even better, I was laughing though, because this music reminds me of one those videos where it's an overhead shot of someone mixing up ingredients to make a cupcake in a coffee mug or something. You know the ones.
That is unbelievable!!
Wow! This is mindblowing! I think I learned a lot just watching those 3 minutes of fast forward!
Wowzers. That’s nice. Extreme talent that we can all aspire towards.
"All there is to it" !!!! sigh... Thank you Ashley... you have worked very hard to learn your craft I am certain....... BUT you do have a touch of magical skill..
Beautiful piece! Really accurate work!
Just wow!
Beautiful
That is freaking awesome!!
Despite what the theorists say, there exists no universe in which I could make that. Awesome skill.
Great demo by a great turner, thanks
Oh my goodness! You make it look so incredibly easy, Ashley!! :O
I, too, was concerned by the proximity of her hair to the turning. However, Marc called her "renowned," so I'm sure she knows what she can and can't get away with. Wood Talk Guys, I couldn't help noticing she wasn't using Easy Wood Tools. Beautiful work, Ashley!
Damn she’s talented. She makes that look so easy!
Beautiful and inspiring, thank you!
crazy talent!
That is amazing! She has a truly amazing talent. Plus I love the way she casually says "thats all there is to it"
And now i need to buy a lathe! Marc, what are you doing with your old one?
It's in a happy new home already. :)
probably in better and more skilled hands than mine! Love the content. keep it up!
Beautiful work and she didn't even waste much wood!!
Great skill!
just... wow. how amazing!
That was amazing to see how thin the end was and not have it break off👍
She is just DAMN good!!!
Ashley, the talent you possess is extraordinary. There is talent and then there you are. It was my pleasure to watch this video. Only one question, in real time how long did it take for you to turn the final. WOW! Sorry
30 minutes at most. She can probably do it fast if she doesn't have someone like me talking to her and asking her questions. :) And her name's Ashley.
beautiful! My OH has started turning lace bobbins - not quite this fine but just as challenging for him. would have loved to see this in real time to get more of a sense of the tool action.
Wow I agree totally brilliant
Epic video
And she knows how to use a chain saw! Dainty and tough.
I've been waiting for this. She's a tour de force!!!
Oh yea, I saw how Ashley did it, yea, it'll be really easy, you know that's "all there is to it", I think I'll just stick to cobbing together warped 2x4's and particle board. At least I know that is something I can do.
That was amazing! I've always been curious about how she did that. It would be great if she were to post a step by step on her channel, or anyone's for that matter, so that us mere mortals could learn and understand how it's done.
"all there is to it!" - as if that was some simple process that anyone could do... I mean... there's a reason that you're renowned, Miss Harwood. Holy smokes.
great skill
That was incredible.
I have only been wood turning for about a month. I think I need more practice and maybe five or ten lessens and a few more years before I can do that. WOW!!!
WOW!! now that is sweet!
You should invite her over and see if she could do it on your treadle lathe.
LOL now that would be a fun video!
"We're not worthy! We're not worthy!"
That’s awesome.
Complimenti super professionale. Brava. Fabrizio 🇮🇹
wow that was awesome to watch...thanks for sharring
So Very cool!
She is very good as well as beautiful!!!!
It really was eye candy. Great job 👍 it’s beautiful 😍
DAMN..............She's good !
Appears to be the fineal piece to a beatiful project.
Did you interview her, or at least chat? I would like to hear that.
RCWorks The guy has become one of the laziest woodworkers along steve ramsay
Ashley! is a great turner' Thanks for sharing the video Mark! 😎👍JP
All there is to it??? Seriously!!?? Lol. Amazing to watch
Yup. That and sharp tools, high speed (something over 3000RPM) and practice. Lots and lots of practice. She admits to making several thousand of these.
Amazing skill!
Turning something that thin is extremely difficult, not for her, of course. She made it look easy.
I keep my tools sharp sharp sharp and use as light a touch as I can and I can't get that thin. Maybe for a bit but not a long stem like that. Very impressive and a beautiful ornament. I'll have to attempt it again.
I didn't catch the type of wood, anyone know?
It's ebony, saw Marc commended earlier, fyi.
Wow that looked it could have broken at anytime. great job
Did you need to invest in a macro lens? LOL
Simply love it, clever woman.
How does she manage not to break that thing when polishing it? Absolut amazing skill!
amazing
WOW that was freakin amazing.
Wow!
That's impressive. I've broken stuff 1/4 inch in diameter a couple of times, this is very good. I think judging by this video, my problem was turning between centres.
Absolutely why it broke - you have pressure on the spindle from both ends and it starts bowing. I turn Midlands lace bobbins at about 5.5mm with a neck around 2mm. I have the drive end in a Jacobs chuck and the tail stock with just enough pressure to hold it steady. And turning at 3975 RPM.
MY GOSH THIS IS PRETTY!!! I'm gonna go to the shop and try to make something like it ;)
Holy freakin crap! How in the name of physics does that tiny spindle not break!!! Did you check to see if she floats? I'm pretty sure there was magic involved here. That is astounding!!
Охренительно!! Восхищен тонкой работой!
Amazing .... just amazing
Holy cow!
Precioso trabajo
Woohoo 😊 too good for sure! Beautiful 🌸
Awesome.
