    This is my first time doing dialogue on location, the reason why it sort of sounds like I'm shouting is I totally thought that you couldn't hear me over the cars driving past and I thought I would probably have to dub this at home. I'm also spoiled by my teleprompter program and home and I need to focus on looking into the camera when I'm reading off a card.

    Last time I went into Movie Madness they had a little bar there too with a collab beer made for them on tap. Great spot. Good overview. We live in an amazing place.
    I'm excited for Portland retro Gaming Expo.

      I didn't see a bar there but they did have a ton of locally made beer and other beverages for sale. I actually got a root beer there which was damn good. They actually now have a viewing room which I haven't been in yet. I just think it's amazing to have access to so much out of print and hard to access stuff. It's also literally in my part of town so I can't complain about that. I should go there more often

    Other tips from a local:
    1. DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING IN YOUR CAR - day or night. Local reddit forums are full of visitor stories who's cars were broken into for a simple charger, change, or small bag left visible. Leave nothing in your car. On cue - my neighbor's friend just got his RAV4 broken into this morning due to change and charger left in the cupholder.
    2. Do not interact with the homeless. Just in the last month there was a machete attack on a biker, 2 people put in the hospital by a guy with a baseball bat, a woman severely beaten by a biker, and others. Most attacks are random violence. I personally avoid public transit. The Hollywood transit center is a shrine to someone murdered on the max from random violence. Emergency services are very slow here so do not count on cops coming quickly if you dial 911.
    3. Movie Mania is fantastic - definitely worth a visit!

      1. Well like every major city you have to be aware of your surroundings. I've been here for 6 years and I haven't had my car broken into but I also don't leave anything in my car not even an empty soda can because you know that's $0.10.
      2.Well, the situation with the homeless population is complex and there are no easy solutions. I actually think that measure 110 was a bad idea and it made a lot of the problems that we already had worse. I think that Ted Wheeler has done a terrible job as Mayor. But it's election year and we're going to have changes to the structure of the government of the City of Portland and so hopefully the elected officials will realize that the voters want to see some progress, I mean we voted to fund services to hopefully address the crisis but I haven't seen a lot of change on the streets yet. Portland of 2024 has a very different vibe than Portland of 2018. But we've had a string of one-term politicians and hopefully whoever wins the loct elections would realize that they need to address Portland's problems if they want to have a chance of a second term.
      3. I need to go to Movie Madness more. I'm going to let my subscription to Disney plus expire and then use the money to rent stuff at Movie Madness

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  19 днів тому +1

      Well, do you see my point that sizzle pie sort of reminds me of Chuck E. Cheese? Especially their salads. I used to get off work at midnight and they were the only place where you could actually get some warm food that wasn't a bar or a fast food drive-through with a super long line

    It's like time is frozen and very cool looking community.

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  19 днів тому

      Well I wouldn't say that it's frozen in time but the culture here definitely respects the past, I actually stopped by Village Merchants in Portland yesterday looking for cassette tapes and by God they were like 100 hipster girls hopped up on pumpkin spice lattes looking for vintage clothes. It was Madness. I mean it like it was full of hundreds of Kimberlys, Caitlins and Karens looking for vintage fashions and it was almost too much for me. It was like Macklemore's Thrift Shop on steroids

      You mean the "Felony Flats" Lents location? Yeah, it was extra grungy and I sort of loved it. I have respect for the old non-Family friendly Pacific Northwest. Totally reminds me of 2nd Time Around.

      Portland Oregon can be a little too much but for the people that like it it's pretty cool. So much of the official tourist stuff always hypes this particular area downtown and there's so much more of the city to see.

      Nice to meet another cartoonist. I was also giving my thumbs up to Marcy of Transcend who also draws a fine comic. But I also enjoy Sketchy People.
      I was hoping she wasn't going to get offended by having her comic on screen while I was talking about the following
      "The city has always been a refuge for weirdos, outcasts, creatives, eccentrics and auteurs."

      @@sketchypeoplepdx Well she used to work at Hawthorne Game Exchange and now she helps run TOTL Games.
      It's funny her weekly paycheck from drawing a comic for the Willamette Week is greater than I'll ever make from my youtube add money paycheck that I get every other month or so.
      Did you like my pronunciation guide at the end of the video? I wanted to make sure everyone knew how to say Willamette, Oregon, Couch Street and Washington.

    Hey great rundown. I love in PDX myself and haunt Totl and Hawthorne when I can. Thanks for the 411 on those other spots, I'll have to check those out!
    The Hawthorne area is my favorite part of town and is very nostalgic and usually a great place to spend an afternoon for out of towners. The Powells Books there is solid and Strait from New York is a great slice akin to Sizzle Pie 💪 although I can't speak to the vegan options
    Also, to any viewers, don't yuck the vegan donuts, there is literally very little difference. I mean, yeast, flour, sugar... That's like 95% of a donut, all vegan.

    • @8bitjoystick
      @8bitjoystick  18 днів тому +1

      Well, my favorite place is to go for vegan pizza in Portland are pyros Pizza at cartopia which is Wood-Fired and then there's virtuous pie. And of course sizzle pie. So the vegan cheese melts at a different temperature and it's usually directly on top with the toppings below it.
      Doe's Donuts is goddamn tasty. So is there ice cream.
      It was tough to make this video and not have my list of places to go to be too freaking long. I'll have to make a follow-up video for The burbs around Portland

      Well I am a proud union nurse, I am also a steward in my union. If you have a stroke, car accident and heart attack you want a reliable union nurse to save your life. My union also fought to pass safe staffing laws so the hospitals are not understaffed with too few nurses. I also make about 30% more than non-union nurses in other states. I stand in solidarity with my brothers and sisters in the Donut Workers United union and I support the right of all workers to form and join a union. But right now we are fighting for the 21st century labor movement that is alive and well.
