Elgar, in his 1st Symphony, takes half of the cello section all the way up to a G6 just before relearsal-number 9 in the first movement. I wonder if he realized that the performers would have to play beyond the fingerboard to sound these notes. If so, I believe this would be the only time in the pre-modern classical literature that a composer deliberately wrote "beyond the fingerboard" passages for a *section* of cellists in the orchestra (as opposed to for a soloist). I had previously been under the impression that beyond--the-board notes on the cello should be treated like "altissimo" notes on the saxophone: something only for very advanced players and only for soloists.
And I learned something today! Thank you for sharing, Cade. Pinned!
High notes don't sound good when an entire cello section does them . Shostakovich gets a g5 from doublebass in 5th Symphony but that is indeed a solo. Violin section is often asked in 20th century scores for eerie high notes like A7 or higher it is chilling close to a clarinet sound or flautando sound . I must check Elgar Symphony it seems highly unlikely he would ask for such extreme techniques when he was indeed pretty oldfashioned musically . Extended techniques are rare in entire groups except for thumping on the wood , col legno is an old technique tapping on music stand with bows are just a few of the most often seen but there are many more possible . Hans Werner Henze has a talking soloist in his violin concerto !
Thank you so much for answering. It means a lot to me
Sorry for mispronouncing your name. Are you Vietnamese?
Jonathan Humphries that’s fine, your pronunciation is very close. Yes, I’m Vietnamese
WOOHOO!! Thanks, I will do better in the future.
It is a violin at this point
Yup
Well, not really. The sound of a cello in its highest register is quite different from that of a violin playing the same tones. A lot more tension and passion.
@@CADEBRYANTObviously they sound different it was just a joke, and your opinion about the quality of the sound is very narrow minded.
@@CADEBRYANT Strained , not always pretty . Viola is aghast high up on its a string !

well in the final of Prokofiev's symphonie concertante, the last note is a E7. you can still play notes after the fingerboard
True, yet the question was the highest note on the fingerboard. There are plenty of works that call for playing beyond the fingerboard, yet as a rule for luthiers, the Elgar is the standard.
I pointed out the same thing. But almost everyone misses that note anyway! 🤣
@@CelloCoach An E7 that's nearly as high as a Piano.
I got to B9 - B10
@@rhiannylopez Really . Wirklich ? Please explain what instrument ? Haha ?
I'm 100% transfixed by this gentleman's demeanor and I haven't blinked for the entire duration of this video.
And I am 100% happy you find the channel's content helpful and engaging :-)
@@CelloCoach yes, it's is helpful!
And that is why composers love to write for cello .. at least I know I do !
Big fan of your work thanks for your tutorials i learn to play bach suite 1 only the first page in less than 2 weeks
Wow, honestly no idea why I watched this video, but the information was excellently presented in a concise, easy to understand and objective manner. Keep up the good work!
Because of watching this video, I am now wondering: “What is the highest note the cello can produce, but by using artificial harmonics or going past the fingerboard?”
Oh snap 🤔
Thanks, it does got confusing!! It doesn't seem like most fingering charts cover this.
I appreciate it!
Tips for making higher nights sound nicer? Especially after the E on the A
Thanks!
Anytime!
1:20 an E 3 ledger lines above the Treble Clef Staff.
ok!
@@CelloCoach If we do that same thing on the 5 String Violin, we can go to an E7 which is a major 6th below the top C on the Piano.
What about the E7 at the end of Prokofiev's sinfonia concertante?
A harmonic and higher, yes, but the question was for the highest note "on the fingerboard" ;-)
It seems like this means that it should be possible to pay Pachelbel's Canon in D on four cellos *without* transposition or rearrangement, and this seems like an obvious "take that" move, but I haven't been able to find any examples. Am I missing something? (Perhaps increased difficulty due to notes that are normally played on open strings now requiring fingering?) Am I just bad at searching?
Thanks ! Now what about decent sounding harmonics ?
Hi Jonathan, I'm arranging a piece that uses a cello. The highest note I go to in the piece is a G6. My question is how quickly and accurately can an advanced cellist play in that range? The part consists of mostly eighth notes at quarter note equals 140 bpm.
That's not a problem, though consult a cellist for the string crossings and bowings.
how do you play a super high note? i’ve tried but it sounds really squeaky.
I can go higher off the fingerboard... 😂😂😂
Some cellos have a longer fingerboard, yes! As for "off the fingerboard", well we only have the bow and bridge to stop us ;-)
Can you tell me how you do vibrato in such high positions? In the 8th position and higher? I've tried and I cannot manage to successfully do it.
Great question, and will be answered in more detail with a video. For now, think pull, not push, for every movement on cello, think pull. And please consider subscribing, Kevin, for the thumb position is on the menu for this year.
Hello Jonathan, love your videos -- do you think you can make a tutorial for the op. 85? The piece seems to be deserving of your time! :D
I'll check it out!
Hey Jonathan, I just saw black tapes on you cello in thumb position, where do you put them overthere?
Hello Lisa, I leave them because they help my students with a reference point to the harmonic. Hence, the harmonic, a whole step and half step above is where they lie. EX: on the A string, the Aº - B - C
I get this, thank you! So.. is open C string it's lowest note?
Yes, it is!
E6 is high enough to be “good”. There’s no point to go even higher, share that job to Violinists 😆🎻
yup
Make a video about off fingerboard notes
Seems to be one for the future!
1:16
I swear my strings are too far from my fingerboard making it hard to play. Idk if it's my bridge or what, but I have to press harder to get playable notes.
You need to see a luthier who will bring your string down. It's worth and makes your cello easier to play.
no idea why did I choose this video
curious
Mine is F6😅
Good for you!
You can play notes off the fingerboard boi
And the title clearly states, as the comment asked, on the fingerboard. Details, Ethan, pay attention to details.
then that would be harmonic, this video isn't for harmonic, its ON the fingerboard.
Boi pay attention😓
1:59 or maybe their cello is A VIOLA
I can play the B7 and nearly the C7! You don´t have to play it on your fingerboard! On my fingerboard i can still play the G6...
only intellectuals play on the peg box for the highest note
????
e for elgar baby
jajaja
Jonathan Humphries, are you from Wyoming?
@@cobalt._.27 yes he is hahahaha
Completely off topic but you look like a player character
Cello that sounds like a violin
a bit
youre like Jesus if he was still alive
Obviously, these are not the highest notes you can play on the cello. I urge you all to look at watch?v=cJWjYLG3B7o (Mstislav Rostropovich playing Popper's Dance of the Elves) to see what the cello can really do.
But on the fingerboard? Surely, I know of this and can play even higher but so pay attention to details.
@@CelloCoach I wasn't arguing against you. I just put that link there so that people can see what the instrument is actually capable of.
