Jason Mantzoukas: "Nobody's Going to Help. Nobody's Looking For You"

  • Jason Mantzoukas spent a couple years in foreign countries right after college and learned quickly that he would need to figure out how to get by on his own. The lessons he learned abroad also helped him massively as he began his entertainment career back in the US.

    "Nobody's looking for you" is weirdly comforting to hear. It gives me the same sense of freedom as I get when I think about how small and insignificant we are on this little blue planet. It doesn't matter what we do or how we live, all lives are valid and here, and we should really just try living it as freely as we can. Without hurting others, of course.

      It's truly comforting for me as well because we're all so mysterious

    Moving to another country and having to establish a new circle of friends and a new support network is incredibly liberating, instructive and scary. I learned this when I moved to Amsterdam 24 years ago. I was a lot better prepared than Mr. Mantzoukas though. He's wrong to say nobody's going to help you (After all, those people from the Peace Corps helped him). In my experience, people are always prepared to give advice. What he means is, you have to take focused action. Nobody's going to hand it to you on a plate.

      @@Alexs.2599 How does he not look Greek? Jason looks prototypically southern Greek to me. Maybe some of his ancestors are from the islands.

    • @Alexs.2599
      @Alexs.2599 5 років тому +6

      He actually doesn't look southern Greek either. His features are not really Greek at all. I'm Greek and I lived in Greece, I know what we look like. I'm not saying he isn't Greek but he has a clearly non Greek phenotype or at least very atypical. Trust me even the most exotic eastern Aegean islander Greeks don't look like him. And southern Greeks are mainlanders, they can be more olive skinned but are still southern Europeans. That is what it is, Jason doesn't look European. He looks like he is either Indian or Middle Eastern. Greeks are southern Europeans. They look similar to Southern and Central Italians. Also some of our Balkan neighbors as well. Again not saying he isn't Greek just saying he really doesn't LOOK Greek. Maybe Jason has some other ancestry in him further back in his DNA.

    Unless you've been through this, you don't know. Once this becomes clear, you basically have a breakdown of sorts. But when that's done, you kinda become a different person- and you slowly start living your life the way you want to live it, start dealing with things that have always scared you. I wish it had happened to me earlier in life but I do remind myself that it could have never happened at all

    It's been a fascinating experience listening to podcasts and encountering mid-level comedians hosting or being interviewed or performing on them, and as the years pass they reach high levels of success, get on TV, travel the country and world, and become the new generation of go-to comedians and actors. To literally witness Mantzoukas go from strange manic voice on HDTGM into regular performer and character actor on my favourite shows has just been a delight, and he's just one of many that have taken a similar route to success (PFT, Lauren Lapkus, Janet Varney, Jonah Ray etc etc). It's been a unique privilege.

    I'm a little shocked at the conclusion he drew from that process of complete breakdown to functioning as an adult - the Peace Corp people didn't do the work for him, but it sounds like they were instrumental in him being able to take another step at all. It would have been interesting to hear how he found those folks. Were they part of an extended network from back home? Because that's what I took from this - look for people that can help you - not carry you, but point you. Help bridge the gap from human alien to human citizen.

    Wow what that casting director said was MAD depressing and discriminatory.... he’s a guy. An actor. A human being. Living a human experience. Why wouldn’t he be able to be in any script except for specific cultural contexts and not being right for the role because he’s taller than someone he isn’t supposed to be taller than for instance 😑😑😑
