Leather only. Saddle soap daily and a neatsfoot soak a couple of times a year.

Saddle soap and mink oil . I've found mink oil to be the best conditioning product .

Our cottage was beside a farm that was owned by two brothers who had 3 horses. When the retired they had a public auction. Most of the farming equipment was worn out but the amount of harness equipment they had was enormous... People were coming just for them. I can see them hanging in the shed they kept them stored.

I can remember that we only warmed down the horses 2 times a year, spring and late summer! Too much washing down takes away the natural oils and "hide" of the horse. Great job on the harness Brenda, if you are ever interested in something full time, I can ship my harness to you for the same treatment......hahahahahaha

Thank you Jim. Only men raised on farms can move cattle that gently. A cows feelings are so easily hurt then you can not catch them when they get wild eyed. HA HA HA. I have seen city people scream and flap there arms and chase them forever with an ATV. HA HA HA.

    • @edwarnock9884

I used to help a friend gather and ship his cows from his ranch to his summer grazing permit and then back to his ranch. The grazing permits are open range so the cows become accustom to no fences all summer long. It was always a short race to get them caught and then we trailed them to the cow camps where we had holding pastures. When they got to a gate it took time to let them find the opening. Some cowboys could never get them in, all the cussing, yelling and rodeo antics never worked and cows would be running in all directions. You have to move quietly and deliberately, no fast or false moves and they will just go through if you give them time.
I tried to show a couple of them how to know which way a cow would go by where you pointed the horses head. (If on foot you can do the same by where you are positioned and where you are looking at the cow, same as a cattle dog does.) If pointed at or in front of their head they will usually turn back. If you point the horses head behind their shoulder they usually will move forward. Most of them never caught on, and just went to cussing, yelling and running their horses around scattering the cattle all over.

Try some Of your hair conditioner on your horses legs, the mud won't stick as easy and will make it easier to brush off.

Never apologize for "sending cows to the butcher". Bison once turned grass into meat and hides utilized by Native Americans. Your livestock now do the same for you. Grass and hay converted to meat for your benefit. Take up and eat!. Bon Appetit!
