  • Hey friends! Today I had a few minutes and decided to tackle the hydrangea trio in my front garden. Join me for a little garden cleanup and I'll teach you how prune limelight hydrangeas (or any panicle/paniculata for that matter).
    Happy Gardening!
    Kate

    Great video, it helped tremendously that your house wall was behind it, much easier to see exactly what you were doing and the result. Best one I’ve watched yet! 👏🏻

      Awww… thank you so much! I had a comment that someone wanted me to really slow it down and talk through the pruning. Love that it’s helped you!

    This is helpful and timely. I have a new pair of Felco shears ready to go on my Limelight, Little Lime and Limelight Prime Hydrangeas today. They do well here in southern Wisconsin. Another favorite is a reblooming Hydrangea called Double Delight Wedding Gown. I added 3 more last year because the first one was so special. The blooms dry into the most beautiful rosy green and the color looks beautiful still. Thanks for your soothing videos!

      I know the exact wedding gown variety you’re talking about! It’s DIVINE. And I’m so excited for your Felco’s. It’s like jewelry for the gardener. 🤣

    I was so glad you also do the “ rule of 3” as that’s what other channels advise too! Expert consistency really helps we timid pruners. ☺️. I can’t wait to get at my Little Quickfires as I’ve been leaving way too much on them! Thanks so much!❄️🇨🇦❄️

    Thank you for the demonstration on how to prune paniculata hydrangeas. Beautiful weather here in SE King county for the next 4 days. Tomorrow I will be pruning my Little Lime's and Bobo hydrangeas.

    I just planted a bunch of PW paniculata in the Fall. Would you still prune them? They seem nicely shaped.

    • @HelloGarden
      @HelloGarden  5 місяців тому +1

      I actually planted the one in the middle in the fall too! It was still a bit crowded for my taste and had a few spindly branches at the bottom so I cleaned it up. Nothing to aggressive... just a little tweaking. But you can totally let it ride and prune back to your strongest collection of branches next year!

    I’m in zone 8 a in Texas. My Limelight Hydrangeas have already leafed out. The leaves are about an inch long. Have I missed the window to prune?

    • @HelloGarden
      @HelloGarden  5 місяців тому

      Just get after it ASAP. If the leaves are only an inch long, I think you'll still be okay! Just don't take it too far back. But absolutely get rid of the spindly branches and anything crossing.

    Wood pruning too early in the spring be risky because one is exposing the ‘open’ wood or stem to last-minute Frost? ❄️🇨🇦

    • @HelloGarden
      @HelloGarden  5 місяців тому +1

      Great question. I know lots of people who prune in the fall with zero issues. Some prefer the look and others do it because of convenience. I think it's best to wait until late winter because I like the structure of the flowers.

    Hello, I'm in zone 6B & my Limelights have buds w/break, about 1/2" to 1". Can I still prune? I thought I'd use the fatter old growth for cuttings to grow new ones. But too late?

    • @HelloGarden
      @HelloGarden  5 місяців тому

      Hi @stephanie2863, it is not too late to prune, but pruning your hydrangeas once there is growth can produce smaller blooms. I say go for it!

    What brand snipper do you use?

    • @HelloGarden

      I use my Felco's for a TON of my work. I like the 6's. The 2's are great as well. When I'm doing more fine detail work such as cut flowers or deadheading, I have two pairs of Dramm pruners that I love. They fit in my pocket and are great for smaller hands!
