    Inspiring! At a few weeks short of 62, I got back to cycling after finding running would no longer work with my knees. Five months in, and without really trying, I've dropped 15 pounds of fat, almost doubled my VO2 max, and raised my average speed for an hour by 60%. Seeing this makes me wonder what I could achieve if I had actual goals and a plan. I do have one: In May, just two weeks after dusting off my bike, I rode an organized event of 20 miles, but cycled to and from the start point and missed a turn, resulting in a 30-mile day. I thought I would die (if I could just be lucky enough). Now that that I can easily ride 30 miles four days a week at a 60% faster pace, I'm going for the 66-mile or maybe the century ride for the same event this coming May, and I'm going to make the top 20% of my age group.

    Evening Mark and Jen. I competed in my first HYROX at Birmingham (inspired by discovering HYROX on your channel) in the 45-49 category. I’d trained hard for a couple of months and watched lots of HYROX videos and thought ‘I’d got this!!’ Well, I hadn’t!! It was brutal. Sled push, burpees and lunges killed me. Finish time of 1:22 when I thought I’d be somewhere between 1:12 and 1:18. My partner (who has now become my HYROX manager) suggested I enter the Malaga event next April which coincides with her birthday!! Along with entering the Brighton half marathon in February I’m hoping to get well below 1:20. I think more burpees and lunges are required in training!! All the above has been inspired by you and amazingly Joanne has now joined my gym which is unheard of so thank you for your brilliant channel.

    I commented on here a little while ago about beginning a journey from fatness to fitness, and although my progress towards fitness hasn't been anything like as impressive as Jen's, it's still amazing when you notice the little things that make you think "oh, I could never have done that before".
    Since getting a job (good thing) I've had to fit my training into my lunch hours, which has probably slowed my progress down quite a bit but has also meant that while I'm at the gym I'm usually training at a much higher intensity than what I did when I had no time constraint. It continues to be a really interesting journey.
    Mark, given that you used to be of a very similar size to me when I started out, did you have to adopt any strategies or exercises to manage lower-leg niggles? I have a history of both foot and knee injuries and would hate for them to be a limiting factor as I try to make my whole body work better than it has been

    • @oneworldfamily
      @oneworldfamily 2 роки тому

      It's great that you've committed your lunch hours to do your training, Martin. Imagine if everyone did that! You'd more than halve the demand on the NHS. Hope you're able to eat properly too.
      If I may add my answer to your question for Mark, a variety of training will be beneficial, focussing on strengthening the tissues around the formerly injured areas. As a former rower I'd also recommend the Concept 2 rowing machine. Rowing exercises all of the main muscle groups so it's an excellent catch-all. However, see if you can find a real rower to teach you proper technique rather than a rookie Personal Trainer. I've seen so many people taught poor technique that it's not enjoyable to them so they quit.
      Also, learn how profoundly consequential diet is on tissue healing, particularly resolving inflammation. So that'll be none of Mark's beloved doughnuts and sugar, significantly limiting crappy carbs, and plenty of oily fish and green vegetables etc.

    What a superb result, and really inspiring for ‘other half’s’ out there who think this is impossible for them. The summary of improvements - speed, strength, mental focus etc are evident in this competition and Jen probably didn’t even realise how fit she had become until the event also ignited the demon competitive spirit 😆. Well done to both of you! Mark, u have some catching up to do 😆😆👌…

    This was an awesome video. Random recommendation, but actually very motivating! I have been starting to try and get back in shape and have plateaued in my runs. I'm going to change it up more and actually go to the gym, I think - perhaps participate in an event down the road to give myself a concrete goal to work towards. Thanks for the great video!

    Great video as always. It's awesome when your spouse or partner shares the same passion for working out as you do. Also, the dude in the foreground blowing his nose at the SkiErg station is why I workout at home.

    Fucking hell, found you out few days ago . i'm fairly big bloke even in my profession (demolition worker) and been trying to find ppl who are doing sports with weight above average ( i'm 125kg atm, been up to 140kg) i love and hate running... These videos give me so much joy & inspiration, Thanks from Finland (the land where there are REAL saunas, by the way! )

    I had to laugh out loud at “leisurely 10k run” and “I’ll rest and recover during the run”
    But seriously, that was a top effort and you both did fantastically well. I really want to do a 5k next year. I know that seems like such a small goal but I want to start somewhere.

    uhhhh these events look like fun. My husband used to be a top athlete (rock climbing) but now is completely out of shape. While I have basically been overweight my whole life and now at 41 are finally working (and succeeding) on getting fitter. I would love to train for and attend something like this with him. Really need to look into it if they do those around here XD
