He was the voice of my childhood. Cubs games were so special because of him. I just wish they had been able to win a World Series before Harry passed away.
Ah, the 80's. When I was a kid I watched almost every Cubs game throughout the mid 80's. With Harry and Steve, it was like watching the ball game with my Grandpa and Dad. There was something personal about Harry that everyone liked. I wish there was another lively announcer these days.
Milo Hamilton kept his grudge against Harry Caray to his dying day. It was all because he thought he was to be the rightful heir to Cubs baseball upon Jack Brickhouse's retirement, but, like Harry said, the Cubs had new owners in the Tribune and who knows? Maybe they were not intending to make Milo the head announcer at all.
Milo seems like Letterman when Leno got the Tonight show. As Harry mentioned Milo had De Paul, the Bulls and Cubs. Just like Letterman had the #1 show for ten years.
24:54 is when Harry disses Milo Hamilton and that prompted an angry retort from Hamilton in a magazine. His version of events with Caray is very different and given how other ex-partners of Caray (Monte Moore, Bill Mercer) have much to say about Caray's nasty behavior, I am more inclined to believe them.
LOVE that Van Halen intro music @ 1:21 -- THAT'S what I remember from watching the broadcasts that summer on WGN !!
WGN started it/put on in 1984.
We were so blessed to have experienced baseball with Harry~
Fascinating interview - particularly the end of it where Harry discusses the problems with Milo Hamilton. Thanks for posting!

Today's broadcasters can't speak their minds now.

Brian, What made Milo Hamilton think that he was the rightful heir to Cubs baseball?

Jack Buck wasn't a fan of Harry's behavior either. Harry was selfish, but lovable.
Ok
