Mets first year at Citi Field was a rough one. Plummeted to a 70-92 due to injuries to Delgado, Reyes, Beltran, Wagner, etc. That was also the year Daniel Murphy led the entire team in homers with 12 because Citi Field it’s first season had an insanely deep outfield

I attended this game with my dad. As a 12 year old wearing an ‘86 Strawberry jersey, sitting in a section of almost exclusively Yankees fans, when the Mets came back late following Wright’s double off the wall off of Mariano, I started talking my trash. The roar of the the stadium and the sound of my fathers “NOOOO!” cutting through it all as Castillo dropped the ball is forever burned into my memory. Once Texiera crossed the plate, the fan behind me poured a beer on my head, and the dude next to him poured another. As we left Yankee stadium, it looked like the rapture of Mets fans had happened. Jerseys thrown out into the trash, hats jammed into handrails, a newspaper machine that had 3 Mets hats and a Jose Reyes shirtsey draped over it. I’ll never forget that game, but it was one hell of a fun day.
Carlos Beltran, during his brief tenure as a Yankees commentator, once said that he will occasionally text Luis Castillo, "Luis, I need to ask you something. Can you talk?" Luis will then answer, "Sure, Carlos. Anytime." Then Carlos will call him and say, "Hey, Luis. How did you drop that ball against the Yankees?" And Luis will be like, "Man, I can't believe I fell for this again." Incredible bit by Carlos Beltran.
A detail about Castillo's career that's often overlooked is that he had the go ahead single, against the Yankees, in game 6 of the 2003 World Series. The Marlins won the game 2-0 so his RBI, effectively, won the game for Florida. It's a shame that he's basically remembered for this moment, and not that one 😭

A see-saw battle with a lot of lead changes and ties and then with the Yankees trailing by one with two outs in the ninth with the tying run at second and the go ahead run at first with A-Rod at the plate. I'll never forget after seeing A-Rod pop it up to Castillo and slams his bat in frustration thinking he ended the game my uncle said to me "sorry bud" and all of the sudden I saw Castillo drop the ball and was like jumping up and down and going crazy while my uncle was like "WTF just happened?" because it's so rare when a big leaguer drops an easy pop up like that.
