A friend of mine for two months has been trying to read "A Little Life" and has gotten to may page 100. She co-owns a comic book shop and it and her family take up most of her time. She takes the book to the shop and I tease her that she will never finish the book. She is used to mystery and crime novels which are quicker to read. I have Golding's "Lord of the Flies" next to J.G. Ballard's "High Rise" with a similar premise but the setting being a luxury high rise. Golding and Orwell had a dark view about humanity and it shows in their books. Have you read Orwell's essays? They are deeply insightful about the man. Jane Austen writes convincing happy endings. I enjoyed the BBC's production of Pride and Prejudice from the 90's which starred Colin Firth as Darcy. I didn't think about the Bridget Jones connection until you mentioned it. Good selection.
I can relate to reading a book for a while. First, as you said, sometimes there’s just not enough time, but with A Little Life, at least for me, it was hard to read a lot in one sitting. Some of the scenes are pretty dark and you need to take breaks. I’ve never read High Rise but it’s on my list! I’ve heard very controversial comments though. Some people said it’s not very detailed and could be done better. But, of course, I want to see for myself. I haven’t read Orwell’s essays, but now that you mention it, I think I will! Thank you for the recommendation! And yes, I really enjoyed the version with Colin Firth! It was very well-done and I think people say it’s the closest to the book compared to other versions.
