I'm so proud of you for unhauling stuff you don't enjoy. It reminds me of Marie Kondo's method of decluttering. Essentially, you part ways with items that no longer give you joy and thank them for what joy (if any) that they have given to you. In the end, you're left with things you care most about/give you the most joy in the present
One of the things I try to think about when I clean out my bookshelves (which I only started being serious about recently) is "Am I going to re-read this?" I don't care how beautiful an edition of a book is, if I'm not ever going to re-read it, then it needs to go, because I only want books that I'm going to be happy to read over and over again.
I do it the same way. I love to read physical books. If I read a book and am going to re read it I keep it if I am never going to even think about it again it is gone.
Videos like this make me so excited to do the same with my own collection! Here's to an era of being our best reader selves and having books that aren't just pretty on the outside, but also contain a story we would be happy to return over and over again
Popping back in to add…I don’t mind at all when the picture of the book is inserted instead of holding up the physical book. It’s easier to see because it isn’t moving around, and also easier to screenshot. 🤷🏾♀️
Videos like this are so helpful for me!!! So many booktok videos are about buying more books which can be super fun to watch, but it’s nice to have videos that remind you to get rid of books that don’t serve you as well:)
You did great! I used to love to collect books, now I have a rule, I only buy a phisicial edition of a book I really loved. That way, I'm sure my collection will always make me happy.
As I age and get more comfortable with who I am as a person I feel I am able to disconnect and unhaul books I felt I needed to keep years previous, and bit by bit I build a book collection that more accurately reflects me and what I love most.
Here for the unhauling yap. 👏🏻 I just did another big unhaul too & it’s so satisfying going into the new year only having books you’re truly excited about!
I just did this same thing this week! I'm redoing my whole room, got a new bookshelf and went though all my books to keep the ones I truly enjoyed. I got rid of 20 books! I was proud of myself!
hi jesse!! some of your unhauls definitely surprised me, but I think it's important to surround ourselves with things (and people) who make us happy and to discard the things that don't :) I think when I was a kid and didn't make my own money every book no matter what it was was a treasure and I just wanted to be surrounded by as many books as possible. Yet, now that I'm older and have more agency and independence I find myself also leaning towards a more curated collection. I hope you fill in the new space you have with books you're excited about!
I'm a little sad you're not giving _The Southern Book Club's Guide..._ a chance. I've read 3 of Grady Hendrix's books, and I strongly disliked two of them. Book Club's Guide though? LOVED it. The female characters actually seemed very nuanced and fascinating to me.😅 And the way some of the husbands were so much worse than any mythical monster could even hope to be... man. Some scenes made me squirm, others made me laugh, there were episodes that made my blood boil. But the book itself was solid start to finish. Horrifying, entertaining, layered. I'd ask you to maybe give it a chance if you still have it around... but then again, unhauling is a slay move, so do whatever's best for your library, Jesse.❤
00:15 I totally get it! I always hated having books in my shelves that i wouldn't recommend without even thinking about it! I started having a TBR shelf but i didn't like to display it and if i didn't like a book after reading it, i kinda hid it in a room visitors wouldn't see, because some of them totally were readers and did check out my shelves when visiting and i didn't want them to pick up bad books bc they saw it at my place 💀
Excellent video, I'm on the same boat on trying to be more practical about buying books (used ones mostly). I'm focused on my unread books and utilizing the library as much as possible so that I only buy books that I love. Your bookshelves are lovely, you seem like a chill person, and all of your meaningful nick knacks are spectacular. ❤
I don't have a problem unhauling books I don't love. I DO have a problem keeping my husband from seeing the donation stack and 'rescuing' most of them. 😅
I like the idea of unhauling read books that aren't a good representation of you as a reader. I've been debating what I should keep and what I should get rid of. This video actually helped me solidify how I want to handle my own book collection. I'm going to unhaul anything that I have read and is not either a 5 star or significant to me in some other way (met the author, etc.) Thank you for the video!
1:47 i literally gasped!!!! But hey good job unhauling books that you no longer feel attached too! I think it's time for me to say goodbye to some of mine...
I love seeing this and feel validated in going through my own books. I have recently realized that my habit in collecting books was based on if it was popular, not always if I truly wanted to read it. Plus I had this weird sense of "I'm not a true book reader if I don't own a lot of books." (This is a terrible combo lol) Since going through my shelf and trying to read my physical tbr, I have never felt more free in just dnf'ing and letting books go that I don't want. The downside is that I also took the dust jackets off of quite few books a while ago, and I'm pretty sure I threw them away in a move. There are books I want to keep, but also want the dust jackets 😭😭

Thank you for this! I’ve been putting off unhauling books, thinking I might read them soon-but that “soon” never came, haha. This really motivates me to let go of books that no longer reflect who I am as a reader.
Until about 2 years ago, if I found a book interesting, or it was on sale, I bought it. Then I counted how many books I had versus had read... I stated issuing challenges to read an entire shelf, or bookcase, and if I read a book and didn't think it was that great, I could let it go. It's definitely taken some work, but I'm working my way through my bookcases. The fact that the local library is literally across the street temporarily has also finally gotten me back into libraries. Having that option has opened up reading possibilities, so I now try to only buy books I've read and want to own, or am 90% sure I'll love because I know the author. I think I've bought less than 10 books in the last 2 years, most of which I found at Costco on sale.
Your unhaul made me feel good about my recent unhaul which also included The Mortal Instruments series. It had sparked my love of YA books which is going on 7 years now. But buying every book I read is so costly and wasteful. I got myself a library card a few months ago. I’m also enjoying Kindle and Audible. Good on ya Jesse for having this epiphany earlier in life than me. I’m proud of you. And I’m sure you are encouraging a lot of readers. 👏🏻
Good on you for unhauling more and more! The more you do it the more it becomes natural 😇 I’m glad you feel lighter when you do it. I felt similar about starling house tbh
Omg yes the whole feeling like you have to buy a book to hold it up is so real 😂 i found that popping up the cover on my kindle and then holding up my kindle helps because then i still have something physical in my hands while i chat about said book!!
I definitely think i used to be someone that felt like i had to buy every book i wanted to read but having a kindle really helped me separate from that mindset (plus I love being a reading gremlin and reading in the dark on my kindle so i get so much more reading done digitally now, lol). I was def feeling overwhelmed w all of the books i had on my shelves and feeling like i wasn’t actually connected with them, and i love what you said about wanting shelves that really reflect you as a reader bc that’s how i feel as well!!! Honestly its kinda scary to get rid of so many books but then once they were gone i never thought about them again so i guess that’s a sign it was the right choice LOL
I always encourage a good shelf clean^^ I love bookshelves that represent who a person is as a reader! Personally I unhaul books I've read that I didn't enjoy, or books that I've lost interest in. If I can see myself (re)reading a book in the future I keep it, but otherwise it's got to go - I hate seeing books I didn't love on my bookshelves😆
I'm currently also unhauling my books to get more space and it's so hard for me even if I haven't spend much money on the books (90% of them are second hand), so I'm really impressed with this. And also really inspired now to be a little more critical about getting rid of books, because I have so many that I don't think I'll ever read or continue to read the series after the first book, and I should probably just give all of them away and give other people the chance to get their hands on the books and hope they'll enjoy them more.
The Mortal Instruments is one of those book series that when I see it it transports me back to 2014/15/16, oh the nostalgia :') I started seriously unhauling books I didn't enjoy enough to keep as "trophies" or to reread this year and I love it ! It's exciting making room for some potential new favourites ! Being very conscious of what books one buys physically is a great way to not end up overwhelmed. I'm grateful for libraries and e-readers.
Its also changed my life to borrow from the library ! And it's easier to read the book bc of the due date. I only buy books if I really want them or if they're not available. Game changer.
I used to be the type to buy brand new and hoard it, whether or not I read it (or watched in the case of physical media). Last year I did a couple of ruthless unhauls, which ended up with my best friends Mum getting a bunch of middle grade books for her school library, and others which ended up in the town centres book barn. I've gotten better at not buying full price (the first few months of the year would disagree) but I go to charity shops and my library once a month so I thrift and borrow where I can.
I totally understand getting rid of The Mortal Instruments. For me, personally, I only liked City of Fallen Angels and City of Heavenly Fire. Also, lately, I’ve been removing books from my Want to Read on Goodreads, and I had titles on there for 10 years and I never got to read them (plus, I removed some comic titles just to replace them with oversized/omnibus editions and it’s been very liberating for me 😅)
I respect your unhauling decisions. Letting go of books can be hard! I've gone through several major book declutters/unhauls in my life, and there's books that I miss from every single one of them. I go through phases, especially when doing any kind of major move or life transition, where I feel like I need to purge and reinvent myself. I want to cut ties to the past, etc, etc. In the process, I've departed with some books that were actually really special to me, I was just stubbornly refusing to hold on to that sentiment, or something, idk. Now I miss my Norwegian hardback copies of the Twilight Saga from my teens. I miss a Tove Jansson book that is actually not Moomin-related at all, and large, impractical books, and books from when I went to university. Sure, I got on the minimalism hype train. Sure, I live in a caravan atm with very limited space, but my mom's house is right across the yard and I can store stuff there. Sure, I may want to live in a tiny house one day, but I can probably fit a lot of bookshelves in there, if I'm smart about it. Maybe I won't end up in a tiny house at all. Who knows?! Certainly not me eight years ago. I didn't know. Here's what I've learned recently, after half a dozen big book declutters, and countless attempts at "reinventing" and "finding" myself, at the ripe age of 29 years: I'm trans. Wow. Shocker. Took me long enough. I never want to declutter another book again, lol. I'm keeping them all!!! Even if my rusty caravan starts to buckle, even if it'll be a hassle whenever I have to move, I'm keeping my books! And I'm getting more! Special editions, hardbacks, paperbacks, used books, new books, multiple editions of the same book, books I'll never read, books I'll re-read again and again. Books in English, and Norwegian, and perhaps one day a third language. As many genres as I can think of. As long as I enjoy the books, I'm keeping the books. Because I'm not a miserable Twilight-obsessed teenage girl, I'm a semi-depressed bookish dude with a soft spot for urban fantasy. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
You're very brave for unhauling books like that! I don't do this anymore because in one moment I am like "damn, I am so sick of this book" and one year later I love it again. So, if i give then away, it haunts me 😂
9:00 okay but I still have S. by JJ Abrams on my shelf waiting for the time to read it. It's a book within a book that has been annotated by multiple people AND comes with extras tucked into the pages.
I find it sooo hard to unhaul books! Even when there are ones that weren't great, they still may have taught me something, like a quote from it stuck with me and seeing that book reminds me of that quote. I feel like I've become better with this over the years (and space has dictated a cull 😅) but the process takes a long time. I might even share books with friends so I can see if I missed that book or not without actually having to get rid of it entirely. Kind of a fail safe 🤣
I have limited space for books, so every now and then I have to get ruthless with my unhauls (I feel you there). Generally speaking, I've always held on to books that I would reread or refer to again (I read a lot of non-fiction) or that I think I might someday be able to give to someone I know, even if I don't know who that might be at the time (mostly with kids books - picture books, middle grade, etc., because I thought I would have kids one day). Nowadays, I just hold on to the ones I know I'll reread or refer back to. That still keeps my book collection in the 500-600 books range. lol.
I’m thinking about cutting my losses and unhauling my Cassandra Clare books too. I just think the series/world has gotten too long at this stage and I just don’t really have the time to commit to reading them all if they are all going to end up connecting to each other. (They are not small books). Plus there are couple of my books that are in the original covers but are different sizes. The different size bugs me but it’s getting harder to find the books with those original covers (I really like the original covers too.)
My method is this. Even if I liked it, if I’m never going to re-read it, I’m not keeping it. My precious se shelf space is for re-read-worthy stories only. 😊
The dark artifices is actually what introduced me to shadow hunters plus I did watch and LOVE the show so I kinda knew what happened aside from the changes
I’m doing some brutally honest unhauling today. I have so much trouble getting rid of books but it’s time to acknowledge that I’m not going to reread books that were just okay, as well as book series that I said I’d come back to and I simply won’t. But it hurts every time!
Could you make a unhaul jar, kind of like a tbr jar where theu have themes or genres and you have to pick a book to unhaul based on what you pick from the jar. It might make you make some hard decisions rather than just scannig the shelves. Just of like a gut check (if you watch good mythical morning) what book did you hate based on your gut reaction to the theme you pick
Maybe you could do a reading journal so that you could still have a representation that you've read the book other than owning the physical copy of the book. I personally am enjoying doing my reading journal and it doesn't have to be complicated. You could actually just do a log of the books you read if you prefer. As someone who has no space for a large amount of books, my reading journal is my trophy case lol.
Hey Jesse, so when I got seriously into reading 📖 I was like you at first keeping every book ever as a trophy 🏆 that works for me with 5 star books but with books that I don’t enjoy not so much . I wanna look at my bookshelves and see books that me happy 😊, not books that don’t make me happy .
I am so glad that there are libraries in my life ❤ How would I afford to buy all the books I want to read?! 😅 Please don't feel bad about not buying every single book you read, that's not what you are doing with audiobooks either😊
I love your videos, what I would love to see is what do you do to the books your unhauling? Meaning, do you give them away to subscribers, do you sell them off, or do you donate them?
UA-camr withcindy. She has a huge following…..I put her up there with Jack Edward’s. I believe she said she gets her books from the library. So no worries about having to own the physical book for your videos. I enjoy just listening to your thoughts.
I am currently reading and loving the southern book club so I was shocked that he was unhauling it lmaoo, its one of the first ive read in this genre so not much to compare it to lol Update: just finished it and I want to die it got so bad in the second half, I thought it would be a next 5 star read cuz the first half was amazing but by the end it was a 2.5 stars
I used to keep every book I ever read, but at some point I just ran out of shelf space and also started to get annoyed looking at books I hadn't enjoyed. So now I keep books I still want to read (I like rereading, so that's not an issue for me), with few exceptions.
i used to unhaul every book i finished if i came to the conclusion that i will probably not reread it even if i loved it bc i thought then it would be better to give it to someone else to enjoy. i still think thats a very good thought but since i got a big bookshelf i tend to collect more and thats also fine 😌
I have about seven bags of books I'm unhauling, different genres and a few nonfiction. This is weird, but I'm debating getting rid of Dan Brown's The DaVinci Code. It's the Special Illustrated Edition. The writing and plot are okay. What I really like is the symbology, the goddessy stuff, and the idea that the search for the holy grail is the search for the sacred feminine, which the Church has eradicated over the centuries. This edition includes photos of relevant paintings, churches and locations. I should note that I'm not a Christian, but I still like some aspects of the novel. I don't think I'll ever re-read it again though (I read twice).
A door romance?! I’m intrigued. I like the point you made about not feeling pressured to buy books for the sake of making a video. I find it hard to do that, but having a photo of the book works just as well most of the time.
I used to be the type to not unhaul books but lately I unhaul when I don't like the book. There's just one author that I keep his books even if they are not the best. I am also getting better at getting rid of the books specifically since I don't have a lot of shelf space
How do you work up to it to unhaul the books you have a strong attachment to? I have several I could Unhaul but have fond childhood/middle school memories of them and can’t unhaul them at the moment.
i know its not going to be the same experience but why dont you just read or watch some spoilers for the 1st two books of the dark artifices? there are some reviews out there that are very detailed. im not sure for dark atrifices but im sure there would be some very detailed ones since its an old and famous series. thats what i did for some series that i was too lazy to reread 😂
My rule is that I have to unhaul a book for every book I haul! I don’t have a lot of space, so it keeps my collection at a manageable level and it really makes me consider the books I’m bringing in- is it worth getting rid of something else? (Especially with how mediocre books have been lately)
I only own books that I love and I try to keep ones I think I’d genuinely re-read in the future I have too many books and want to cut down my physical TBR
I defo unhaul any book I gave 3⭐or less! It pisses me off to see it on my shelves and to think I've spent money on something that was just mid or bad 😆 Unless it's part of a series I've enjoyed or an author I like, then it has to leave my house ASAP.
Wow i don't think i could break up my Shadowhunters books but I'm the a reader who keeps books i don't like giving them away unless I have a replacement for the book
I try to buy and keep books I think I will re-read. So I unhaul the ones that after I read them I know I won't re-read them or books I DNFed. Cause publishers misrepresent books sometimes or you know the premise was great but the execution didn't work for me. It happens.
Sometimes I see ppl just put a picture of the book cover next to them as they talk about the book. I think that's fine. Definitely don't need to be holding the physical book!! 😊
It’s because I have ADHD that I only buy 2 to 4 books at a time knowing that those will be the next books I read. That way I don’t have a huge unhaul because I lost interest in those books that I bought months ago.
My unhaul rule is, if i don't plan on actually rereading it, I unhaul it. Or sometimes save it for little free library swaps

I'm bad at unhauling. It's like I'm a dragon and the books are my hoard. Only the really bad ones are yeeted out.
1:48 rip early 10’s booktube 😵💫
I swear you've been saying you're putting the dust jackets back on for at least six months... 😂
I'll be really excited to see the books with their jackets on again
TRUE LOL
Popping back in to add…I don’t mind at all when the picture of the book is inserted instead of holding up the physical book. It’s easier to see because it isn’t moving around, and also easier to screenshot. 🤷🏾♀️

Same! I loved that one!
Agreed. I thought it was great!

A Little Free Library of my own really helped me let go of books
Good job with the book purge
for all book enjoyers like myself, reading the ebook 'Magnetic Aura' is a must
I used to be the type to buy brand new and hoard it, whether or not I read it (or watched in the case of physical media).
So, if i give then away, it haunts me 😂
You perfectly described my feelings for a study in drawning and legends and lattes 😂
That still keeps my book collection in the 500-600 books range. lol.
The GASP at the ShadowHunters
We love a ruthless book unhaul!!
Anyone else here obsessed with Olivia's Cooper "Manifestation Hacks"? It's like discovering a secret treasure map of manifestation!
i'm pretty proud of my book collection... but i still dream of having a dedicated room for books like yours one day. ❤
I've been working on unhauling books as well, but it's tough with the ones that give me nostalgia. But I'm working on it lol.
Shadowhunters was a phase for sure. It feels like it's something so many people have moved on from in general honestly xD
I’ve disliked every Grady Hendrix book I’ve read except….the Southern Book Club. It’s one of my favorite horror books.
I am so glad that there are libraries in my life ❤
How would I afford to buy all the books I want to read?! 😅
Please don't feel bad about not buying every single book you read, that's not what you are doing with audiobooks either😊
I love your videos, what I would love to see is what do you do to the books your unhauling? Meaning, do you give them away to subscribers, do you sell them off, or do you donate them?
You need a Pango store! I would buy something from you! especially if its annotated
UA-camr withcindy. She has a huge following…..I put her up there with Jack Edward’s. I believe she said she gets her books from the library. So no worries about having to own the physical book for your videos. I enjoy just listening to your thoughts.
I am currently reading and loving the southern book club so I was shocked that he was unhauling it lmaoo, its one of the first ive read in this genre so not much to compare it to lol
Update: just finished it and I want to die it got so bad in the second half, I thought it would be a next 5 star read cuz the first half was amazing but by the end it was a 2.5 stars
Study in Drowning and Legends & Lattes are awesome. You just unhauled some gems there 😮
I used to keep every book I ever read, but at some point I just ran out of shelf space and also started to get annoyed looking at books I hadn't enjoyed.
I am recovering from a "need to own everything I read", and trying to become more selective. It's a tough journey ahaha.
I feel you!
The Last Hours is where i finally gave up on Shadowhunters. Couldn't do it anymore after that first book.
I only keep my favorite books that I will reread Lol. Good job doing a cleanup 😂😊.
I try to only keep books that I could see myself re-reading. Honesty I mostly buy e-books and then only buy the physical books that are favorites.
Me reading and then I tune back in to the video and you're talking about pee🤣🤣🤣 I'm legit dying
Literally gasped when he said the mortal instruments 😂 I understand why he's unhauling it, but it still stung a bit
I think they just announced that A Study in Drowning is getting a sequel for some reason.
iiiiinteresting. feels a little unnecessary to me.
I liked A study in drowning 😢
as much as i love 'asid', i genuinely see no reason for a sequel... but I'll still be buying it to read it since i love it so much. 😊
@@noblesshorts same here
I haven't read any book in the Shadowhunters series. It gives commitment vibes.
Your singing to the choir. I want to keep ones I like and maybe not the ones pushed by podcasts
Nostalgic attachment to books😭😭😭😭😭
I was just thinking, i think im gonna see goodbye to the mortal instrument series and just as i thought it they show up in the video. 😂
How do you work up to it to unhaul the books you have a strong attachment to? I have several I could Unhaul but have fond childhood/middle school memories of them and can’t unhaul them at the moment.
Hi Jesse! Might I suggest donating these to Pagination? I work there and our used section is scarce, plus we love you 😊
Love unhauls
i know its not going to be the same experience but why dont you just read or watch some spoilers for the 1st two books of the dark artifices? there are some reviews out there that are very detailed. im not sure for dark atrifices but im sure there would be some very detailed ones since its an old and famous series. thats what i did for some series that i was too lazy to reread 😂
My rule is that I have to unhaul a book for every book I haul! I don’t have a lot of space, so it keeps my collection at a manageable level and it really makes me consider the books I’m bringing in- is it worth getting rid of something else? (Especially with how mediocre books have been lately)
Cassandra Clare is the Queen of recycling. She have 3 characters throughout her whole Shadowhunters saga
What happened to the first book in the Illuminae trilogy? I loved the first and last books in that trilogy.
I only own books that I love and I try to keep ones I think I’d genuinely re-read in the future
I have too many books and want to cut down my physical TBR
Hey! Would it be in any way possible to buy the mortal instruments books from you?
I defo unhaul any book I gave 3⭐or less! It pisses me off to see it on my shelves and to think I've spent money on something that was just mid or bad 😆 Unless it's part of a series I've enjoyed or an author I like, then it has to leave my house ASAP.
legends and lattes
Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea was a better cozy read than Legends and Lattes. Just my personal opinion. ☺️
It happens.
I still haven’t read the last hours trilogy 😅
I thought I would be someone who keeps books like trophies, but as soon as I read my first book I didn't love i wanted it gone immediately
HI I am a new subscriber. 🎉
I absolutely hated The Last Hours trilogy, and I feel so validated that someone else was as frustrated with them as I was.
