I remember these! They are cool! I believe they are ThyssenKrupp and they go 1000 FPM (that’s the same speed as the elevators at the Marriott Marquis in NYC). I always feel like some are broken whenever someone comes here. They’ll probably get a mod sometime soon since they are pretty old. Also, the motor on car 2 is epic!
Skivator No, I think it’s only around 600 feet per minute, because the station is 200 feet underground and (I timed it) it’s exactly 20 seconds from door close on one floor to door open on the other. So that’s 10 ft/s times 60 which is 600 ft/min.
Sarah Edwards nope, that’s wrong. That doesn’t take into account acceleration and deceleration. 600FPM is the mean speed but not the actual travel speed. The travel speed has to be much faster, and it’s likely around 1000FPM.
The scariest metro station I have ever been on. I would often be completely alone waiting for the train. I would be so relieved when the train arrived.
It’s not the motor. It’s the bearing going out on the car top sheave. These are 2:1 roped cars that have a roughly 30” sheave on top of the car. You would never hear the motor from the platform level it sits 20’ above the car when it’s at the mezzanine level.
At least 700fpm just based off a quick measurement. (Total moving time is a bit under 19 seconds by my count to travel ~190 feet) Wikipedia lists a source claiming that these travel at a peak speed of ~1000, but the source is a paywalled article I can't access.
@@joewileman4480 If you want to know how fast they go in MPH, search "fpm to mph" on Google, and Google will give you their unit conversion panel at the top of the search results, you just enter how fast those Elevators go in FPM, and it will tell you.
I went on the Forest Glen Elevators on 9/27/2021!!! Elevators 1, 2, and 3 are in construction, but Elevators 4 & 5 were working when I was there, but Elevator 6 was turned off when I was there. At least I like Elevators 1 & 4 the best because of the Left and Elevators 2 & 5 the second best because of the Middle Elevators. Elevators 3 & 6 are my least favorites because of the Right Elevators. 😀😃😀😀😃😀😀😀
Elevators 1,2, and 3 are currently being modernized. They will be ready for public use soon. These are originally dover units installed in the late 80's. They were modernized by mid American elevator in the early 2000s, which involved new controllers and fixtures. The current mod involves new motion controllers and many more upgrades. The elevators travel 700 fpm and the total travel is 174 feet from the top floor to the bottom. The original dover gearless machines are still in the machine room and were refurbished as part of the current mod. Come back soon to see them again after the mod is complete.
I’ve never been to Forest Glen. Whenever I go in the Metro, I always start from sometimes Rockville and sometimes Glenmont. I live in South Carolina, but my grandma and most of my cousins, aunts, uncles live in Maryland. I like left way better than right on most things. I’ve never been to Forest Glen, but I’d definitely like Elevator 4 the best because it’s the left that’s closest to the Glenmont Platform. I’d like Elevator 1 the second best because it’s also the left, but it’s closest to the Shady Grove platform. I’d like Elevators 5 the best because it’s the middle that’s next the the Silver Spring Side. I’d like Elevator 2 the fourth best because it’s the middle, but it’s next to the Wheaton side. I’d like Elevator 3 the second least because it’s the right, but it’s at least closer to the Glenmont platform. I’d like Elevator 6 the least because it’s the right that’s closer to the Shady Grove platform.
Some people say that these elevators travel 1000 fpm. I actually rode these before, and I disagree because it don't feel like 1000 fpm. It might be around 500-700 fpm.
I wonder if they had custom voices for those floors as well? But I’ve seen some elevators that have custom voices for certain floors and other floors they just don’t say anything. Maybe that’s what these were?
To STL elevators could you please revisit in Febuary 5th 2025 Forest Glen Metro Station in Silver Spring Maryland could you please get a shot and upload a video of these all elevators.
@@stlelevators I think it’s a high speed Kone NON ecodisc motor. Because it sounds identical to the motor at the Washington park MAX station in Portland oregon

AWESOME video 👍👍👍
Another must ride for when I'm in DC again
tkefan29 Same!
I'll want to ride them again next time I'm there!
STL Elevators Same! I can see why! They look so fun to ride!
I’m possibly going to DC this summer so these are definitely must rides for me
Fun fact: Forest Glen is the deepest underground metro station in the entire DC Metro. It was so deep they couldn’t install escalators
Another Fun Stat: And the next stop has the longest continuous escalators in the Western Hemisphere.
Another fun fact:
Bethesda had that record until Wheaton beat it.
2:58 -> RR trent 1000
Yes xD
I love those elevator’s a lot
These are so cool.
It would be a pain if you got stuck in between floors on those, because there's NOTHING in between floors.
Epic motors tho
There are maintenance floors accessible by some lofts with I assume emergency access to all of them
Are those Monitor buttons? Also, imagine if you had to climb the stairs. That’d be crazy.
That motor in elevator 2 is epic!

A bank of 6 6,500 lbs-or-so capacity cars for a subway station? Seems a little excessive to me.
This station doesn’t have escalators so if it’s busy there’s plenty of elevators that can hold a lot of people
2:56 - 3:17 EPIC motor!
I don't believe it's the motor itself, but more of a noisy wheel.
@@stlelevators Still, sounds epic. And doesn't the motor make that sound when at leveling speed?

i think the elevator thats sitting at the floor might be turned off or out of order
It was turned off
Floors R1, R2, & R3 are locked off. This station is 20 storys underground.

Epic motor sounded like a tornado siren.
haha kind of
That one at 2:55 sounds like a tornado siren
haha! It kind of does.
Oh yeah it does a bit lol! I'd say it sounds like a low pitch Federal Signal 2001 lol
Sounds like a bad imitation of our town’s firehouse siren to me-either way, it’s freaking wild!
