- Опубліковано 9 лип 2022
- Customer bought this 2008 Audi TT Turbo from the auction, and the following year the convertible top took a crap. He says that a fuse keeps blowing in the trunk.
Let's diagnose the problem and see why the convertible top is STUCK.

When I was repairing cars I NEVER opened a customer's sun roof unless I was requested to fix it. I learned the hard way that they are left shut all winter and only fail open when it's in my shop
I love bonus footage. A double bonus with a follow up is priceless!
This is such a great video. There’s nearly zero information out there about these MK2 roadsters, so anything is appreciated.
This is exactly why I own an old Miata. If my convertible top has problems going up or down I know it's not an electrical issue but likely something to do with my right arm. ;^)
I have the RF version, but knowing japanese and electronics, it will probably last longer than I will.
@@teekay_1 Ya probably will they know how to make very good equipment
the best convertible tops are the hand-operated ones, as in old TR3's and MGs.
You think this one's bad, try working on a Mercedes Vario hardtop.
@@adotintheshark4848 and older Fiat 124 spiders!
So many electrical principles underlying that diag’, and you just smoothly transitioned from one step to the next without hesitation! What is so perfectly ingrained in your mind quite likely flew over the heads of many fellers unnoticed, like jet planes in the night sky! I appreciate the opportunity to reflect on each step, adding to my own, as yet, less enlightened diagnostic mind! Thanks Ivan!
Memorize one important rule in automotive electrical troubleshooting: Be sure capacity of clients credit card directly proportional to complexity of diagnosis BEFORE you kill your day.
@@hightttech Damn straight! We’re pretty lucky at our shop as far as customers go for the most part. They bring it to us ready to pay cuz they know or have heard we are the guys who figure shiz out when others can’t! We have always been a diagnostic shop (since ‘97)! There has been a lineage of us… just so happens there is two of us in the building these days! Rare treat when the goin gets tough to have another like minded tech by your side. All the more reason customers pay!!
A walk in the park compared to the Forester 😂
TT's having water soaked hydraulic motor is a known and frequent issue. There are a number of videos on UA-cam on how to relocate the pump from the well where Audi put them (where they get covered with water) into the trunk area to keep them dry.
Does the water run down the hoses and pool in the box? It has a lid. Perhaps AUDI needs to consult with Tupperware for a solution?
Or don’t park the car outside with a broken rear window.
Drill a drain hole and add a drain line
You said that about the last job. "I'm definitely not doing this repair" 😂
I was thinking to myself that the motor could probably be found somewhere, just not from Audi. Bingo, good on the owner to track it down. No need to break the hydraulic circuit. Great video Ivan.
Bonus footage, customer talked me into replacing pump!
Wow Ivan, I love how close Audi puts those opposite jump posts to boost the car! (I can’t see that ever accidentally touching each other LOL) bonus and more bonus footage? BONUS!
I kept waiting for a Bonus Footage of you pulling the motor off and opening it up!!
Great video Ivan!! You also got the top closed for the car can be driven. Excellent! Changing just the stator is a great fix for that motor. I have done the same on conveyor belts many times. Better than removing the whole assembly if you can get away with it..
Very good diagnostic repair!
Loved it , learning something new of every single video.
Thanks for sharing
I always seem to get the Audi projects in our shop. Use a right angle pick in the front of the connector to lift the tab off the hook to disconnect electrical connectors. It's the easiest way.
My son had the same issue with his 09 TT. He replaced some motor or some type of cylinder in the trunk problem solved but he had to take it to Audi to program it. Works fine now.
Enjoyed this one! Like the Yamaha 750 in the background at the very end.
Ivan, leave it to you to figure out a work-a-round to get that top closed. Great job! Thanks for Sharing!
German technology is wonderful when it's working, the problem is that it's not always working ! VW and AUDI had their share of water intrusion, brakes lines rusting under the carpet at the driver's feet, fuse box rusting under a leaking windshield, windows winders rusting inside the door, sliding roof leaking and jamming open, etc.
All the convertible models where called fish tank ! 😅
the reason they collect water is there are drain holes in the door and trunk sills that routinely get plugged with debris and dirt. Once that happens, water can go wherever it wants.
Audi. Proof the Germans can make a mistake.
@@The_Sword3 Absolutely !!!
Nice diag Ivan. Thanks!
Thank you!
Sweet diag Ivan. After tearing into that Subaru exhaust valve repair, I thought you'd jump at the chance to do an easy swap out - guess the owner wanted to handle it... good looking charger too.
The best Diagnostic
Good job! I figured you'd be talked into doing the repair, but was wrong this time.
Great looking charger - seems to do the job perfectly. Apparently, German cars like to collect water in the electric systems, by any means possible. Great diagnostic and happy ending :-)
That charger better work..it's $800 on eBay.
My 02 TT had the bad CCM issue because of water intrusion. I had to replace it with a euro one and also had to get new key fobs as they use a different frequency in Europe. Of course the water drains were clogged and also the rear window was delaminated. I jb welded the rear window and also put some small magnets inside the rubber seals on the bottom of the top to help it seal better. I also covered the CCM with plastic and sprayed the circuit board with marine circuit board sealer to keep out the moisture. I also had to replace the crappy cog belt that runs the wind partition glass. It required the WHOLE convertible top cartridge to be removed. It took a while but it worked. Sold that pile....
Interesting diag straight to the point pretty quickly . Was thinking what was involved with changing that hydraulic pump whether it required some kind of air bleeding procedure similar to hydraulic power steering . Glad it ended well for all concerned .
Just rewatched it the customer was able to just change the motor made it a easy job .
good video, thank you
"Thanks a lot for watching, we'll see you next time!"

😂
If you have a convertible it is not waterproof. And if you store it outside get a car cover to keep the water out. Great work Ivan
It was like opening a treasure chest 😂
I had a friend in San Diego with an early 2000s TT. The lock for the top was manual and the mechanism for the too was exposed. That part squeaked as you drove like a top on an old MG or something. I loved driving it though with the 6 speed manual gear box. I wouldn't mind having a coupe version of one of these with the manual gear box.
Nice going
Sweet Yamaha in the background!
👋Sir, very nice charger tool, between winter and mouses we have plenty work. Blessings
Thanks
Nice looking charger, I prefer not to go over 20 amps myself when charging a battery but it's good to know it's there if you need it.
I checked the price and it is a professional price! $750! Ouch 🤣
@@EngineerLewis $750 for a stable power supply that can do 12 and 24V up to 90 Amps? That's a good deal for that kind of product.
Great elect diag, glad to c u not have to do the repair, pain in the Audi
Ivan makes some of the best videos out there. Well edited with no extra loud music and AD trash.
And minimal swearing, no sexual innuendo.
Think I saw Diagnose Dan do a similar video.
Have had many German vehicles without all that stuff. You guys do know they make all sorts of vehicles, right?
Have a Honda CR-V fish bowl in the driveway. Trunk likes to fill also. 😉
Nice happy ending. I was just wondering if it was possible to replace the motor only. Glad that worked out for the customer, for now…
Yeah good game plan my man
That was a fun one.
Nice XS!
Oh boy, I fear a caravan of subarus and audis is making its way towards PHAD right now...nice job on the diag 👍
Ugh, hate convertible cars lol. Too many things happen like water intrusion and electrical shorts etc. Great diagnosis job Ivan. Just don't buy audi lol. 😕 haha. Great bonus footages!! Many thumbs up 👍 👌
I knew a few girls in France with these TTs. I sat in the back seat for a long trip once; the rear pillar is where one's head should be so I sat at a 45* angle slanting towards the "transmission tunnel". The rear may be good for (very) short children.
Well, the TT is just a glorified VW Beetle. Pretty sure they run on the same platform and chassis, but I may be wrong.
My Audi A6 water story: Car parked in Airport outdoor storage had its wiper well fill with water which put the brake booster under water. Brake pedal would not move. Had to clean drain holes under battery and replace vacuum booster. Very little room to work.
Love how it fails in the open position so you are totally screwed. Thanks WV.
With absolutely no crank handle set up (like a Model T) so you could do it yourself.
I choked laughing when you said holy wires! Sorry. Room for goldfish? You the man!
i have a 95 miata and i love the car for this reason. nothing excess. it is cheaper for me to buy a new top than it is for a dealer to work on this audi. also top replacement for a a5 3,000 bucks
Ivan you should make a video on all the Topdon charger options it has
3 - Excellent video…..
A drain hose from the bathtub to outside of the vehicle would be good along with a sealed cover so water can't enter in the first place. I was expecting a "no parts required" repair of the motor.
heyyyy .. i saw a mini trail poster. i had a mini trail too !!
I think it's just a little stuck tapping with a hammer might set it free if you do it enough lol. Glad you did not get sucked into the repair
Can you do a review of the new Creader Tools from LAUNCH? They have stand alone tools for Mercedes, BMW, and AUDI. Price point under $200 each. Want to know actual full capabilities as far as diagnostic and service functions. I love your channel and enjoy watching you work.
The only convertible I ever had was a Jeep and that came with rubber plugs in the floor to drain it. 😂😂
Good news for me Ivan. I no longer have to worry about ex gf and her auction Equinox Not talking to me now. Still going to save for the scanner. Oh geez, the dreaded 4 rings. Sweet looking charger! Glad you got it closed for the customer. Nice diag as usual Ivan
BMW has a valve that can be opened in the hydraulic circuit which allows the top to be operated manually. I would think Audi would have the same. At least then the top can be raised until the problem can be looked at. Never had to use the feature but at least it was there.
Nice old xs in the background.
I would think that the lid would keep water out. Maybe adding a gasket or silicone would help.
Ivan the man
The large fuse popping made me think it was the pump of death lol.
If there was a chafed wire, i would expect sparking noise or smoke ha ha :-D
I would also check the limit switches.
There should be a drain for that roof, blocked body tube?
Fit a new pump but drill holes in the bottom of the box or just turn it upside down.
Sorry waffle mode :-D
When the TT was first released in Europe, there was something terribly wrong with the suspension and some type of recall program. A family friend who works in the industry said the car scared the hell out of him the first time he got on the RAMP to the highway. Eventually, Audi replaced the tires, wheels, struts, springs, and I can't remember what else. Even after the replacement parts, he said the car was sketchy so sold it with like 500km on the clock. I assume VW got the suspension sorted eventually . . .
thats not correct . they changed the rear anti roll bar thickness and added a rear spoilier due to some owners driving like nut jobs and loosing control at high speeds due to lack of skill
@@repairitdontreplaceit It was the case for the early cars released. Maybe your are referring to a different, later program.
Doesn’t that top have a manual crank? The 09 does
That Topdon is a sweet charger, but damn the price. $750 dollars is a bit too steep for me right now, ouch.
10% off coupon 🙂
You can also close it manually.
You said you were not going to fix the Subaru also. So my money is on you fixing the pump. So its off to the Junk yard to get a used pump. I have faith in you to fix the problem. Finding a pump my be hard. Ok I spoke to soon
Only the best in German engineering.
I alwas make sure the hood switch is inputting the hood is closed, all windows have their auto up and auto down learned any car door open i insrure the door switch is signaling the door is closed . then i start. take care
My first convertible was my last convertible@!
Great diag, but now I'm trying to decide what is cooler. The battery charger 9000 or the Yamaha 750?
Obviosly the Yamahammer haha
You need a new garage door bottom seal. 😀
Ivan with a textbook lesson on diagnosis using a methodical step by step approach. Always learning from you man.
Mice condo complete with swimming pool
Had a customer with the same problem... The pump was super expensive. Got a good pump from the junkyard but the pump was different and the motor was the same.. changed the motor and fixed the water leak... All good!
"I'm not doing this repair" like I am not replacing the valves on the Subaru?? ;)
Your meter reads thats it's open, not shorted, there was no continuity. I'm I correct? 🤷🏻♂️
Great video!
I was interesting in that charger till I saw the $750 price.
Whew, 750 smackers for a battery charger is too steep for me. It looks like a really nice charger but thats way out of my budget.. BTW, nice diag on the top problem.
Yeah I would rather buy a 750cc vintage bike for $750 ;)
That's a lot of battery charger. It will charge a 2800 AH battery. That's a bank of 4 of the batteries in my F250 diesel truck.
Hope it's a good charger @ $750
That's pretty cool that they made it separable, so you can just get a new motor and not touch any of the hydraulics. I really don't understand the point in making a tub if it's not even sealed. lol.. I bet they made the tub just big enough to hold all of the hydraulic fluid if it were to leak it all out. But honestly, judging by the foam, I bet it's only for NVH.
I suspect the "tub" is for soundproofing. Prospective buyers of new cars don't want to listen to the pump, it spoils the magic.
@@jonka1 Yeah... that's what NVH is-- "noise, vibration and harshness" --- NVH- It's the term that the industry uses when they want to cover up noises and squeaks and rattles--- and motor noises.
makes me think of a line that goes RTFM
Huh. No water sensor in the hydraulic/electric pump assembly? Guess I can cross Audi off my list, which presently has Subarus and Hybrid sedans (at least Camry).
Damn man, this is easy. Try working on a VW EOS! Top problems galore
My son has the same car and has replaced the flaps twice
Hummm, that's a cool car. I wonder if the 69K written on the masking tape on the driver's visor was mileage, or the auction price ???
hehehehe...
I guess he should be glad that it's just a little electric motor that fills up with water instead of the entire engine like when the water pump goes on a Ford.
What is it with German seals that just don't work
Got to love those fish bowls.
I been waiting for the Tornad90000 to come out, I have a couple of their Tornado4000 chargers and love them. I have restored many batteries with these, great for charging AGM batteries
Nice pinup girl
We getting a vid on that yamaha behind you?
Check out the Indiana trip from last year when I picked it up 👍
If I owned this wreck, Id never undo the hydraulic lines, Id remove the motor from the pump. could be a no part repair if motor was cleaned up.
Battery charger cannot do lifepo/lion/lipo? mehh
I think the real reason they put it in a foam packed sealed box was to reduce interior noise when the roof goes up and down.
I'm increasingly of the opinion that modern German cars are meant to last about 8-10 years and then you throw it away.
I had one of the dreaded German cars that was 22 years old and the only problem was one brake caliper. All the other German cars (5 total) have been far more reliable than the USA vehicles I have ever owned. Will never own a Ford, GM or whatever they are calling Chrysler nowdays.
5 to 10 months
Years ago, if so saw a car coming at you with one headlight it most likely was a VW. My nephew's GF was looking for a car and he asked my opinions about VWs. Told him, nothing special, but electricals might be a problem and don't be surprised if the headlights are a problem. She buys the car. A year later, "You were right, she's got a headlight out".
So it was a "German fishbowl" because of a broken rear window? At least you could have apologised Ivan?! ;-)
