Anything where the design makes it difficult to tell if you're getting the right product or not is just reprehensible and always ought to be openly criticized for it.
I bought the wrong Blood Angels codex when first starting. It sucked hardcore. The only way I found out as a new player, was the code for app told me it was 9th edition. Which then made the book impossible to return. For getting into a new hobby, I don't think I've had a faster arc of hating on a company than Games Workshop. They are so anti-customer it's shameful.
The Admech book is probably the best example of how much they butchered the book art. The Admech codex art might be one of my most favourite art pieces in the game and to have the background fucking murdered for this addition is criminal. Imagine being the artist and seeing your work get torn apart like this
GW: Releases three different versions of the Crimson Fist art work for covers Also GW: Just put the icon in the background of 9th's and we'll call it a day
The funny thing is they’ve done this before for tyranids, from 5th to 7th they used the same art (tyranids didn’t deserve one in 6th apparently). And they also used that same piece of art another time for a tyranid specific white dwarf. One of many things in the pattern of gw just not giving a shit about nids
6th and 7th edition chaos space marines were the same cover art, may have even been more. The one with the blood gorgons chaos marine. 9th and 10th edition csm codex have a slightly different background hue (red vs orange) but it's the same dude. Also I can't find those cool dice on barons webstore, my csm are fallen howling griffons and they look perfect for me. (yes I painted red/yellow quartered with chaos trim)
The craziest thing is now all the codex cover art is different. But the first 4 or 5 are all like this. Its like, hey maybe you should have waited like, idk, until the new art was done for everyone before rushing this to the printers. Letting 9th stay around an extra 6 months wouldnt have killed anyone and probably made world eaters and guard players happy to get a little under a year to play their codexs before they were made irrelevant.
With some of the other things they've done, like with Kill Team, I feel like this could be a hint they are changing the way they do Codexis. Maybe they're hoping to do smaller updates more often or something. Maybe they'll stop doing them all together. Maybe App only. Maybe free online rules like kill team. I'd rather have all the rules free out there online, withe scheduled balance updates, and the books become just cheaper lore and art pieces. They are an art company not a rules company. They should focus on selling minis and art and lean more into the online community for rules updates.
Isnt new coded editions the same thing as the previous ones such as the art duplicate fail? You only change a little bit of the stats and some rule engagement and taddaa you need to purchase a whole new Codex for 30 pounds for the same shit more or les
I was expecting them to talk about the general anticonsumerist stance GW has torwards just about anything be it their fans, peopel who create amazing things based on their IPs and their products.
Well, I suppose repeatedly causing your customers to buy the wrong products is right in line with that, considering a story I just read from another commenter. Bought a 9th edition instead of 10th and didn't realize it until they'd opened the app with the key, which then also voids the return policy. Great way to shave extra money off of your plastic addicts, that. 😒
Icing on the cake vvas that the 9th ed codex vvas so horrifically OP that the game vvas functionally unplayable for like 9 months. My best friend played tyranids (nevvest army) I played Imperial Guard (oldest, at that point objectively vvorst army). He literally could not make an army list that vvas even remotely comparable in strength to my best one. He vvon virtually every game vvithout even trying. it vvas genuinely detrimental to the health of the game because vve basically just had to stop playing for like 6 months. PS: My vv key is fucked so if you see a lot of double v's that is me desperately trying to speak to you in spite of this avvkvvard ass predicament I am in.

Just imagine all the wrong Xbox consoles that got bought this Christmas because of their awful naming scheme.

Welcome to the club friend ive been playing since late 4th edition and GW has only gotten worse
"I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed" sums up this video.
Also sums up GW's decision making for the last decade.

You want a crazy drop in just art look at the GSC 9th and 10th. 9th is amazing, weird and interesting. 10th looks like it should be in a mobile game.

I dont play very often and have taken the wrong Tyranid codex to most of the games I've played.

“Sorry all sales are final, so….. no refunds. Wanna buy an updated codex?”

The only difference for lord of the rings is a different lord of the rings screenshot and it doesn't help telling them apart at all
