The bad no call is when Jordan kicks Stockton's knee on the Kerr game winner. That was as clear a foul as you'll ever see but Jordan gets those and that's why he was undefeated in the finals. The way their momentum was taking them and where Jordan's hand was on Russell and how he stopped on a dime and Russell tried but his momentum kept him going, there is absolutely no way Jordan could get enough strength to push him the way people think he did. I was not and am not a Bulls fan. You can only exert a few pounds of pressure bringing your arm across your body and even less in the position they were in. He didn't even wrinkle or move his shorts. You would be able to see his shorts move...a lot with the kind of push everyone wants to say happened.
Correct. I’ve seen instances where Jordan did do some dirty stuff - for instance, grabbing someone’s wrist and pulling their hand with him to make it look like he got fouled when going up for a shot. But the Russell shot was pretty clean. From some angles, it looks possible that Jordan may have pushed off. But the most convincing look for me is the camera angle from behind Russell; as you point out, Jordan’s hand didn’t even wrinkle Russell’s shorts. It’s also clear just by looking at Jordan’s hand that he wasn’t applying any real pressure. There is virtually no way Jordan could have put any significant force on Russell with that hand.

I agree w Stockton Although I didn’t like him as a player bc I liked other players more, I respected his ability his skill his talent & his way of playing the game He had to play the game the way he played it in order to survive but mostly in order to thrive & become a top five PG
Please he's the smallest guy on the court, and back then the game was a combination of football and Greco-Roman wrestling, Stockton/Malone was a combo for the ages, one of those legionary pairs. I'm not a Utah fan, but I respect that organization to this day!
The greatest Stockton story is when he got off the bus at Olympics in traffic jam, and enjoyed a strohl with his family. At that moment all of the absolute greatest players to ever play the game. Would of gave anything to be able and do what he did. Thats the greatest story EVER!
Everybody talks about how physical the 80's and 90's NBA was but you got a 6'1 155 pound PG being called a dirty player lol. Puts all that "physicality" of the 80's and 90's in perspective. Personally I don't think Stockton was dirty though
I heard in a 1997 Sports Illustrated poll. Stockton was voted among NBA players as the 2nd dirtiest player in the league behind Rodman. I didn't think Stockton was dirty either. but perhaps he was better at hiding it than others.
Would they have called it on Russell? No. You have to see it in real time at game speed ... it was just masterfully executed. People who call it a foul watched it ten times in slo-mo and come to that conclusion. That was not how the refs could see it. To call an offensive foul in a moment like that - irrespective who shoots it - happens only in the most egregious cases. This one does not fall into that category by a mile. If Russell had pulled that of no one would have called it. It should not be a debate.
Possibly the most underrated NBA player of all time. All time steals. All time assists. Some greats have said those two records are unbreakable. I hope, if broken, I am alive to see it... even as a Jazz fan. It would simply be awe-inspiring.
Also, to give credit where it's due: John Stockton was psychologically devastating like Jordan without the bravado. That's almost more terrifying. The truest pass first PG.
I'm surprised that so many speak about the push off of Michael Jordan with Byron Russell, but hardly no one mention the hand checking and the crowding all over MJ in which both are considered as fouls in these times... The hand checking was allowed so much back then but is just worst than a push off because it was a way of holding onto a person to disrupt their game... The crowding is now considered as a blocking foul in these time ... So like Stockton said, it was a battle during the game, and Jordan won that battle with creating some separation from Russell fouling him to hit that game winning shot... Now go check the video for yourself and watch the hand checking and blocking fouling from Russell because there was not no other way for him to guard MJ !!!! MJ didn't complain about the hand checking and blocking fouls, so WHY SHOULD ANYONE COMPLAIN ABOUT A. SlighT PUSH OFF.... Go check for yourself !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Could you imagine if Stockton had a great team behind him? Maybe Malone and Barkley as his forwards and Hakeem or David Robinson at the 5 and somebody like Clyde the Glide or Reggie Miller at the two? I guess that's basically the dream team from 92, But I hate Stockton didn't get enough credit for how good he was.
Let me guess, "Oh, I don't know...guys push in the NBA." As a kid I loved the flashy, hyper athletic players. But I think Stockton may now be my all time favorite. Stoicism off the charts...
Witnessing Stockton's integrity in the face of mass media propaganda smears during the last 4+ years, I am not surprised to hear about the "teachable moment" for which Dan referred. The world needs more leaders like Stockton who isn't afraid to be the adult in the room and demand accountability through level-headed reasoning and basic moral compass. Among pro-athletes, no one has gained my respect more as a person during the post-Lockdown era than John Stockton.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Hey man! I witnessed MJ do That exact play 2 other times!!!! During his career, Once I think in the early 90s 89 or 90 maybe perhaps vs the Hawks or the Cavs... Saw it again watching old games on YT and fell out of the chair! THE EXACT SAME MOVE ,,, SAME SPOT,,,SAME RESULT!!!
WE ALL CAN LEARN FROM JOHN STOCKTON HE IS A TRUE PROFESSIONAL GREAT ONE OF THE GREATEST BASIC BASKETBALL PLAYERS THE GAME HAS EVER HAD. MR JOHN STOCKTON THANK YOU.
Among other things he was clutch too, in those days i would hate the ball to be in Stockton's hand in the final seconds than pretty much anyone else, if i was supporting the opposing team.
It shouldn't be a surprise to see him teaching his kids how to be decent human beings when you see how professional and upstanding he conducted himself for 19 seasons in the NBA, on and off the court. Listen to any of his conversations he is just a good normal guy next door that never got caught up in the shallow game of the rich and famous and the self-promoting. He is just a great human being that any parent would be proud to have.
People break records all the time. NO ONE will ever break Stocktons assist and steals records in his lifetime.... If it happens the player will most certainly never break both records.
I think dans actually wrong about this one. I dont think any ref would call a push off in that situation. If it wasnt the last seconds of the game then they might but not on the final shot in the NBA finals
A great video. I have no skin in the game…. But every time I see A Jordan highlight reel… I think “Dang, that sure looked like a push off to me” Otoh, it was done without the heel of his hand… so the result was ambiguously deniable as only a light hand on the hip. All time assist leader and 3rd highest scorer in league history. Stockton and Malone were one of the best duos ever.
i love stockton even more after this interview
John Stockton = Legendary Record Holder :)
Offense and Defense and leadership skills... that's the total MVP package
Ten times more of man then 99 percent of todays nba players.
Ambassador of Professional Basketball and NBA Diplomat...class act and maybe the best 6 foot player in the league ever...what a career!
It would be legendary to have the late 80s, all 90s, and early 2000s all star players to make podcast together or something like that
The 🐐 PG!
Its insane to think about....this guy is my size and he was a dominant NBA player.
This is the guy I should’ve emulated. NOT Michael Jordan. Jordan was a freak of nature athletically. Stockton was a genius
I totally agree john is the goat
Never gonna get excuses from this class act
I agree w Stockton
Although I didn’t like him as a player bc I liked other players more, I respected his ability his skill his talent & his way of playing the game
He had to play the game the way he played it in order to survive but mostly in order to thrive
& become a top five PG
Players called John dirty because they didn't want to admit that they got punked by a 6' tall, scrawny white guy.
Stockton Responding like a straight GANGSTER 😎🤘🏾💯
Pure Class
Leading assist guy in the history of the NBA. By a looooong shot.
He did NOT push off. Micheal crossed him just like he did plenty of times before "the shot".
Class act
Stockton is the GOAT!
Grittiest
Of
All
Times
Wow what a legend
Let me guess, "Oh, I don't know...guys push in the NBA."
As a kid I loved the flashy, hyper athletic players. But I think Stockton may now be my all time favorite. Stoicism off the charts...
Stockton trying to take the high road. He says it was a push off, but says if he was a ref, he wouldn’t call it. He should be a politician.
John Stockton is a legend.
I wish Stockton got a Ring.
Nevermind the mailbox 📫
Man, hell yea Jordan pushed off. The first time i saw that clip i was surprised it wasnt called as an offensive foul
Bryon Russell would have never pushed off of Jordan because he would never have been the one to take the last shot.
I was JUST thinking about a week-plus, ago: "I NEVER hear anything, from cool John Stockton. He was a DAWG...!!"
And, here he IS :0).
Mad respect to this guy
The line that caught my attention is your final report card in life is how your kids turn out. That's so true.
The purest of PGs.
“I think it’s kind of weak when someone says that”-WHAT A BOSS! 😎😎
The guy is a legend a role model true character on and off court
He was my hero ,you can have mj ,for me the goat is john not mj
People break records all the time. NO ONE will ever break Stocktons assist and steals records in his lifetime.... If it happens the player will most certainly never break both records.
I think dans actually wrong about this one. I dont think any ref would call a push off in that situation. If it wasnt the last seconds of the game then they might but not on the final shot in the NBA finals
Hey, another Mike that said what I just said. (You commented first.)
Stockton holds 2 records that wont be broken in any of our lifetimes!!!
Respect John Stockton tell it like it is
I saw a recent interview were Gary Payton said he was the toughest guy he's ever had to guard.
A great video. I have no skin in the game…. But every time I see A Jordan highlight reel… I think “Dang, that sure looked like a push off to me” Otoh, it was done without the heel of his hand… so the result was ambiguously deniable as only a light hand on the hip. And in that sense another example of Jordan’s exquisite craft.
Michael Jordan fans are the worst NBA fans then .
man stop...you can tell when somebody never played the game
@@theuniversegalaxynba and you too...soft ass clown
