The Z's take the easiest path, sometimes that means digging right down to you. Dirt doesn't have that many HP. It's also easier to leave one path to you open right to your fighting position (traps are ok). If you still find some digging, consider adding a cobble ceiling to that room.
My favorite POI to make a main base AND horde base is Senor Drogas Residence. Exterior is all concrete, only have to remove the front and rear stairs as well as replace the first floor windows/doors with at least cobble. *the two garage doors have a mix of wood and concrete so you'll want to replace the wood with better. The second floor is my main base area. The horde base is an addition on the rear middle with a 5x5 footprint (3x3 inside the walls) at the 2nd floor level which floats over the 2nd flight of stairs. Only 1 door into it and a ladder to go up to 3rd floor. 3rd floor is the fighting spot also 5x5 with the scaffold ladders that don't let vomit through as walls. Same with the center 3x3 of ceiling with the ladders to shoot the vultures if the traps don't get them first. To get them to path to that fighting position, I put a stair on the far side of the pool just inside the rear fence that rises from both left and right until it gets to my floor height. 2-3 solid blocks towards the fighting spot then switch to the small pole over till it meets the floor of the fighting spot (you have to build from both directions cuz of stability). That's the basics. Upgrades are: Draining the pool to make it easier to find loot bags plus there are already some traps down under the water. A small platform on either side for a sledge to knock them off the pole and/or a support to either side for several rows of electric fence. I've used the first 2, didn't really need the sledge but it was kinda funny blasting them down to the pool. Draining the pool takes some time but I think it's well worth it and adds to the drop distance. You'd need to dig out a space underneath 3-4 blocks deep the entire inside width of the pool. After making space, you need to take out the floor of the pool in a checkerboard pattern and filling each hole after the water drains. That's easier than taking out every piece of the floor and the shallow end is 2 concrete thick. You can always make a cap over the pool to cover the water so loot bags are easier to find.
Dang that is awesome!! You should show it off if you haven’t before it sounds really nice. Now you got me thinking about upgrading the Serrano residence some more to make it nicer haha
If you can find a silo at a farm, that can be the best place to ride out early horde nights. No fortifying needed, just take out the bottom two parts of the ladder that leads up to the top and chill inside at the top level. The zeds will take out a couple parts of the walls but they won't be able to get to you.
I liked that spot too! The silo behind the boar farm I think? I was worried it might collapse from a horde cause I have seen them take out towers I’m standing on before!
@@stewpidasohl I've used that spot multiple times and they have taken out a few of the wall panels but never enough to take the silo down. I'll usually throw a few traps out just to slow them down a bit. Then I reinforce it after the blood moon and rinse and repeat.
There are two spots in that yard that they'll dig through... only need to get through one or two blocks to fall on you. You need to fill them both in. I think the other spot was back where you built that tiny wall at the entrance so they couldn't walk around the barbed wire.

There are quite a few great base locations. One of the fire houses works quite well, and there is a good barn for vanilla you can use as well.
Oh cool I don’t think I’ve even seen a firehouse yet, I’ll have to go exploring!
Day 49 here still living and surviving horde night in the little 24rs coffee shop in town. Fortified it going along, still working fine.
Love it haha can imagine ya with some tunes and a fresh pot of coffee, what chill place to survive. Must be well fortified!
That's a great place for a pit style horde base pretty much already have all the digging done lol.

Oh interesting!! I guess I got lucky there haha
